- DS Sunil 'Sunny' Khan: [waiting for Cassie to suit up before they enter a crime scene] You're a woman, aren't you?
- DCI Cassie Stuart: Apparently.
- DS Sunil 'Sunny' Khan: What is it with girls and crying for absolutely no reason?
- DCI Cassie Stuart: Which one?
- DS Sunil 'Sunny' Khan: Gemma, 'til one in the bloody morning.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: I cried last week with my dad.
- DS Sunil 'Sunny' Khan: Why?
- DCI Cassie Stuart: Don't know, really. Just felt like it.
- DS Sunil 'Sunny' Khan: What did he do?
- DCI Cassie Stuart: Gave me a hug.
- DS Sunil 'Sunny' Khan: And that made you feel better?
- DCI Cassie Stuart: Uh... Not really, no.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: Is a crime less serious because time's passed? Is a wrong less wrong because it was done 50 years ago? Or 60? Or 70? I think if people are still alive who are affected by it, or even if they remember people that were affected, I think that society has a responsibility to take it seriously. No matter how far back, no matter how old they are.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: [looking at the seemingly blank pages recovered from an old and very damaged journal] Are they all like this?
- John Burton: [nodding] All.
- [Cassie sighs]
- John Burton: So then we scanned them with infrared.
- [John leads Cassie, Sunny, and Kelly to a computer monitor showing the pages]
- John Burton: Still unreadable. So then we tried them with luminescence.
- [Taps the keyboard, revealing images of the pages with now visible writing]
- DCI Cassie Stuart: [softly] Oh, wow.
- John Burton: I always like this bit.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: How do you do that?
- John Burton: Oh, certain materials have the ability to change incident visible wavelengths into longer invisible reflected ones if you shine a luminescent infrared light at them. Ink is one of them.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: [grinning] I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, but I've slightly fallen in love with you.
- [first lines]
- DCI Cassie Stuart: [entering the kitchen. Her dad is sitting at the table] Oh, Dad, I'm off.
- Martin Hughes: Smell all right to me.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: What've you got on today?
- Martin Hughes: [working on a crossword puzzle] Oh, you know, busy, busy. Losing your touch here, love.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: I had to take a work call. I'll still wipe the floor with you any day, mate.
- Martin Hughes: I'll finish it for you.
- DCI Cassie Stuart: See you later, old man.
