A Truly Unique Subplot saves this Episode,
lesleyharris3024 November 2015
Puffless is a great Simpsons episode with a well written storyline and loads of very funny scenes. It's an enjoyable episode that nods back to several older seasons, bringing back Marge's mother, Patty and Selma's pet Jub-Jub, and even a Simpsons Movie reference which fans will be very pleased with. The weakest part of the episode was actually the main storyline, while a plot of Patty and Selma giving up smoking had potential, it simply didn't work out as well as it could have, the characters are too one-note to be able to hold the episode in lead roles, the main reason episodes like A Fish Called Selma or There's Something About Marrying worked is because there were several other characters involved, but just the two of them isn't enough, also the plot is poorly developed and has no resolution. Thankfully, this episode is saved by an outstanding side story that is clever and unique, as we see Maggie befriend a group of animals, eventually heading off on an adventure to save a possum, it's very fun and superbly animated, I liked seeing the show try something new and I'm perfectly fine with more side stories like this one, especially if they steal focus from a mediocre plot. Puffless easily could have been a mundane episode, but because of Maggie's triumphant side story it is great fun.

Patty and Selma decide to give up smoking, meanwhile, Maggie befriends a group of animals.

Animals Rule!!

Warning: Spoilers
Well, after watching this terrific episode and reading that very negative review here, that was enough to inspire me to write a review here.

"Puffless" is a two-story show. The first is about Patty and Selma attempting to quit smoking and also splitting up, to the horror of Homer. He does come up with a new use for bleach. My favorite gag involved the sisters dumping all of their cigarette packs in a bowl and lighting them up to dispose of them. The next scene cracked me up. I won't give that away!

The other story, that occurs simultaneously with the sisters one, is of Maggie and her new family friends. This is the one that really rocks!! A surprise animal makes an appearance, while the phrase "Black Hawk Down!" is uttered in a clever moment.

A near great episode. I hope the other reviewer stops watching The Simpsons. He'll be happier and can gripe on some other show. Trust me, this one is good! Currently rated 7.3.

Great, unique Simpsons episode!

Puffless really surprised me with the clever writing and hilarious moments! The episode has 2 main stories, one where Patty and Selma decide to quit smoking after they learn their father died from lung cancer, and the second is where Maggie goes on an adventure with the animals in her backyard.

The Patty and Selma story was very interesting to watch as this is something new we have never seen on the Simpsons, which proves that the new seasons can deliver smart and unique episodes. As the episode progressed, it was very intriguing to see how Patty and Selma dealt with giving up on smoking. Their story was filled with hilarious moments, although, I did think the ending was very weak, and they could have created a better ending, but the beginning and middle saved the episode.

The Maggie story was also quite funny, and was a cute and nice addition to the story line of the episode, and ended really nicely.

Overall, I believe the episode deserves a 9 out of 10 because it had a strong beginning and middle with hilarious jokes and 2 great story lines, but I think the ending for Patty and Selma's story could have been stronger.

Part decent and part stupid
SLionsCricketreviews11 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I cannot understand how this episode is getting rather decent ratings. The storyline with Marge's sisters trying to quit smoking was decent at best, with maybe a couple of funny moments - the best being Homer walking in on Selma in the shower - but it ends up being a joke by the end of the episode. The sisters are not really overwhelmed by their desires to quit smoking, they just begin to smoke again. It ruins anything the episode had. Don't get me wrong, "The Simpsons" is not a drama but it has in the past had dramatic elements. Elements that work because the episode is building up to something. Not here.

Maggie was once the part of The Simpsons that should have been there, at the forefront like the rest, but never was. She was the most forgotten member of the family, to the point where Homer at times forgot Maggie to be one of his three children. Now, she is on a quest to free an imprisoned animal. The entire plot was stupid, had absolutely nothing to do with what "The Simpsons" was and was a pathetic means of gaining audience acceptance by presenting 'cute' material. Nonsense.

Once again, this is not a good episode although a tad bit better than the previous two. The 'couch gag' reference by Homer was an atrocity.

A Maggie episode.
burteriksson27 July 2020
This one concentrates on around Patty & Selma and the subplot on Maggie. And the latter-mentioned is a bit different than we are used to see on The Simpsons, but I liked it surprisingly much.

Good jokes that make you laugh - something that I was desperately hoping for this show as they've reached their 27th season! Still worth watching.

Astonishingly bad

I am a huge fan of the "Golden Years" of the Simpsons, and have been since childhood. And even though most fans would end that era around S12, I still would enjoy episodes as far as S16/17. I would very rarely even contemplate watching a later episode, but curiosity got the best of me and I decided to watch one this evening. Big mistake.

The couch gag was pretty stupid but at least it was short, compared to some insanely long ones from recent seasons. Within the first minute or two, there were some funny moments, I laughed maybe twice, and I was optimistic about the rest of the episode. It was going fine until Maggie's subplot. I know The Simpsons is now owned by Disney, but is there any reason to hammer us over the head with it? Do they really believe than many Simpsons fans will enjoy a "cute" and unfunny storyline like this? The writers used to make the show for adults but accessible to children. Now, however, it's aimed entirely at young children. The jokes are crummy and cringey, too juvenile and wacky, with none of the down to earth nature of the best episodes. The meta joke about the couch gag made me physically angry. The Patty & Selma plot was bearable at least, and partially amusing. The Maggie one was unforgivable.

Worst season ever.
joshua-303-9277814 October 2015
This has been the worst season of The Simpsons in its history. It's just sad to see them staining the reputation of one of the best shows of all time.

It's as if they've stopped trying. The jokes are awful, Dan Casteneletta has either stopped caring, or is too old to bring it... Even the animation looks bad this year.

It's getting hard to argue with people who say the show should be cancelled. In my opinion they should end the TV series and release movies every few years, after they've accumulated enough material.
