DEUTSCHLAND 83 "Brave Guy" (2015)

DEUTSCHLAND 83 is cold war television series made in Germany. The 8 episodes are set in 1983 during the height of the sabre rattling between the West and the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Stuck in the middle are the two Germany's, East and West. This is the second episode of the series.

Jonas Nay plays an East German border officer who is seconded into the East German Stasi. The Foreign Intelligence section needs a body to slip into West Germany to spy on a German General. The man, Ulrich Noethen, is in charge of working with his American counterpart to set up Pershing Missile sites.

In this episode, Nay is to go along with General Noethen to a NATO conference taking place at Brussels. The General's son, Ludwig Trepte, also a junior officer, is involved in the trip. Nay's job is to plant a listening device in the hotel room of a top NATO official. Nay has help from various East German spies already in play at the hotel. (Including a rather nasty assassin type played the tall and cold looking, Lena Lauzemis) Nay, still not comfortable with all the differences between West and East Germany almost blows his cover. The rather rushed training Nay received is coming back to cause various problems.

Nay manages to plant the bug and even steal some papers and a computer disc from the NATO official. Then he is almost killed by a Chinese or KBG (it is never said which) agent after the same disc. Nay is bloodied in the battle with the other agent and calls in the NATO guards. The break-in and theft of the NATO info is then blamed on the Chinese agent.

There is also a bit of domestic trouble involving Noethen's daughter, wife, son and sister-in law. It also seems that Nay's girl back in East Germany is stepping out with another guy.

The look of the episode is first rate and the action bits well handled. I liked what I have seen so far from the production. .

Warning: Spoilers
'Brave Guy' is less eventful than the first episode. Although there are some action and espionage scenes, these don't develop the story or characters in surprising ways. There is still a lot of interesting stuff here, it's just not as entertaining as the first episode. Then again, often the second episode in a TV series is less impressive than the pilot so hopefully things will pick up in the next one.

Martin is still incompetent as a spy, making clumsy errors that only don't blow his cover because of luck. This makes him more of an endearing character than he otherwise would be, as does his inexperience of how the West works which leads to some comical moments.

Unintentionally comical is how after being attacked Martin isn't even taken for questioning.
