Look up "trashy TV" in the dictionary, and there's probably a photo of The Royals cast. Yet, for it's badness, it's also strangely compelling, as I found out quite quickly.
Elizabeth Hurley plays Queen Helena of England. Her second son Liam (played by William Moseley of Narnia fame) and only daughter Eleanor (played by Australia's Alexandra Park) are living their best lives, not really worried about anything - it seems - except drinking and doing drugs. The two spares, I guess.
Then they get word that their brother, Robert, has died in what appears to be a military accident and suddenly Liam is the heir to the throne, and appears to have feelings for Merritt Patterson's Ophelia, a girl he hooked up with before getting word about his brother's death. Ophelia is also the American daughter of the royal palace's head of security.
We meet the rest of the cast including King Simon, his scheming younger brother Cyrus (who is portrayed with almost comic book villainy by Jake Maskall), and Cyrus' two dim-witted daughters.
Queen Helena, Cyrus and his daughters are pretty horrible people at first glance. And second and third glances, too, to be honest. Eleanor doesn't appear to be much better, but she clearly has issues.
The big bombshell is that King Simon blames the throne for his son dying - as it is tradition that men in the family join the military - and proposes a resolution to disband the monarchy.
