As director Alex Ruhl’s “Rock, Paper, Scissors” continues an international festival tour, the project’s funder has sent out a message to other immersive titles considering public support: BFI Network is open for business.
“We are open for all applications, and accepting narrative fiction VR projects,” says BFI Network talent exec Alexzandra Jackson. “I had such a good experience working with Alex [Ruhl] on ‘Rock, Paper, Scissor’ that I would certainly love the opportunity to work on more.”
The new and emerging talent arm of the BFI, BFI Network looks to invest in filmmakers outside of London and Southeast England, keeping scouts in a number of English regions and satellite offices in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Exclusive: Producer Amy Williams has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Waheed AlQawasmi, the writer and director of upcoming indie feature Jacir, starring Lorraine Bracco.
The suit also names WAFilms, the production company behind the film. AlQawasmi has hit back, describing the complaint as “without merit”.
In the complaint, filed in the Chancery Court for Shelby County, Tennessee, producer Williams claims that AlQawasmi wrongfully removed her name from the film as its lead producer and has failed to pay her the promised compensation for her work on the project. According to the filing, Williams says AlQawasmi approached her in 2016 to help produce the film originally titled My Friend Jacir.
The suit claims that Williams procured funding and cast members for the movie, including Bracco, who stars in the film’s lead role. The film completed production in December 2020, at which point the suit claims that AlQawasmi “manufactured” a contract...

It’s the next big thing on Netflix, and now the rest of the world is catching up to the phenomenon of Squid Game. That includes an appearance with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Wednesday night.
For the uninitiated, Squid Game debuted on Netflix on Sept. 17, and quickly grew to the streamer’s No. 1 show via word-of-mouth. Produced in South Korea and subtitled, the survival drama is set in Seoul, where people with enormous, unpayable debts are lured into a competition that promises riches to the victor – and death to the losers. Think Hunger Games for its closest cousin.
Fallon noted how the phenomenon has created a buzz. “Now all the major networks are trying to create the next Squid Game,” he said in his monologue. “Somewhere, there’s an NBC executive saying, ‘Let’s drain the pools on American Ninja Warrior.'”

For this latest review round-up, I take a look at two very different genre films I had the pleasure of catching up with over the last few weeks: Before I Wake from Mike Flanagan and Tom Holland’s Rock Paper Dead.
Before I Wake: Over the years, it has been interesting to watch Flanagan’s career, as he’s consistently challenged himself in various ways, giving us an array of stories that feel wholly unique and yet are so very distinctly a Mike Flanagan film. For anyone who has been following the journey of Before I Wake’s release, this is a project that has long been waiting for a platform in the Us, and thankfully Netflix has finally given it a proper home. A stunning mix of heartbreak and horror, Before I Wake is an emotionally-charged genre hybrid that features compelling performances from its trio of leads, and an...

Tom Holland (Child's Play, Thinner) returns to horror with the indie feature Rock Paper Dead. Developed by writers Kerry Fleming and Victor Miller, the film involves a "cured...serial killer." Peter returns to his ancestral home to, unsurprisingly, kill again! The film stars: Michael Madsen, Tatum O'Neal, Najarra Townsend and Gabrielle Stone. What is surprising - there are two sequels already in the works, for this series. Rock Paper Dead 2 and 3 will release in 2018 and 2020, respectively. For now, a trailer for the first title is hosted here. The synopsis expands on the film's story slightly. Peter (Luke Macfarlane) has been released from a state hospital, for the criminally insane. Childhood memories, triggered by a visit to his hometown, compel Peter to kill again. A visit from Ashley (Jennifer Titus) might quell his rage, if he can just resolve his past. Rock Paper Dead will release in 2017. Before the film's launch,...

Child's Play and Fright Night (1985) director Tom Holland steps back behind the camera for the new horror film Rock Paper Dead, and you can get a tease of what to expect in the film's first trailer.
"Rock Paper Dead is the story of serial killer Peter “The Doll Maker” Harris, who returns to his ancestral family estate after being released from the state’s hospital for the criminally insane after twenty years – a “cured” man. Once inside the old house, anguished memories from a tortured childhood and visitations from past victims shake Peter’s resolve, but it isn’t until the lovely young Ashley enters his life that Peter makes a fateful decision. One that rekindles old desires that have always ended in murder."

"Welcome back, Peter..." This is the first horror film from director Tom Holland since Thinner in 1996. Rock Paper Dead is the new horror film made by Tom Holland, director of the original Fright Night, Child's Play and Thinner. The film is about a serial killer named Peter "the Doll Maker" Harris, played by Luke Macfarlane, who returns to his hometown after being "cured" in a mental hospital only to relapse into his spooky, doll-maker, serial killer ways. The full cast includes Michael Madsen, Tatum O'Neal, Maureen McCormick, and Jennifer Titus. With so much innovative and unique horror being made, by comparison this looks rather lackluster. Even the lead actor seems miscast, the whole film just seems weird. Here's the first teaser trailer for Tom Holland's Rock Paper Dead, direct from YouTube (via Deadline): From the creators of Friday the 13th and Child's Play!, Rock Paper Dead is the story of serial killer,...
