Two Little Ships Passing in the Night
lavatch17 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"The Secret: Dare to Dream" is a heartwarming drama that seeks to demonstrate the theme that "life is a miracle." The message was only minimally Christian in its orientation, as the focus was on a benign universe always willing to open doors for those perceptive and courageous enough to walk through them to discover genuine happiness.

Miranda Wells is a widow living in Louisiana with three beautiful children, Missy, Greg, and little Bessie. It has been five years since the death of her husband, Matty, who was a dreamer. As an inventor, he never hit the jackpot on any of his projects. Now, Miranda, who works in the nearby Middendorf's fish joint, is leading a hardscrabble life and may have to sell the beloved family home.

Into Miranda's comes the most intriguing character in the film, the smooth-talking Vanderbilt engineering professor Brae Johnson. Brae is not only a charmer, but he also has words of wisdom for everyone after a miraculous experience spared his life and gave him an entirely new outlook. He wins over all of the kids, especially in giving Missy the idea of the taffy pull as the pretext for her sixteenth birthday party.

The only mistake made by Brae was in being slow on the trigger to inform Miranda about the reason for his visit to her home and the nature of the mysterious contents in a manila envelope. Part of the problem is Bobby, Miranda's controlling, but well-intentioned mother-in-law, who always seems to be the spoiler when Brae needs a few minutes alone with Miranda.

Sadly, the big loser was Tuck Middendorf, who publicly proposed marriage, yet eventually lost out on the sweepstakes for the hand of the widow Miranda. Brae was apparently living with a woman, and one of the best moments in the film is the revelation that the woman is not not Brae's live-in lover, but his sister!

At one point, Miranda is physically abusive to Brae. But all is forgiven in this endearing, family-oriented melodrama. The last barrier falls down when it becomes clear that the two little ships passing in the night will be able finally meet alone at the Waffle House where they will dare to dream together.

Not for cynics!
jonclynch14 August 2021
Seriously, how cynical and jaded do you have to be to hate this movie so bad you give it less than 5 stars? OK, so it's not a blockbuster and it is predictable, but it gives a spot on message for the times. It's the perfect antidote to the current pandemic age, and a refreshing change to the ultra-violent trash currently filling the minds of our screens today. We enjoyed it as a family without having to worry about anything inappropriate or upsetting. Just enjoy it for what it is- a feelgood movie that encourages us to be better. What's so wrong about that?

Sweet. romantic, feel-good
maccas-5636728 February 2022
This movie was so sweet that it literally gave the Katie Holmes character a toothache (and myself one too).

It felt very Nicholas Sparks. But it was simple, feel-good and had enough heartwarming scenes to make me happy. It didn't require much brain power, which was what I wanted.

It focuses heavily on the law of attraction, but I didn't feel like it was too preachy. It gave some food for thought. Some scenes were over-the-top cheesy, or featured some questionable acting. But it had a big enough heart to look past most of that.

It's easy to see why this film has been panned heavily by critics, yet has more favourable reviews and feedback from regular audiences. Some aspects reminded me of Dawson's Creek - the setting, aspects of the Katie Holmes character and her love life, the storm.

The world is so damn gloomy these days, that a little positivity can't hurt. Glad I gave this a chance.

Pastiche Perfect
Cruise20614 October 2020
It's been a while but I already feel like a second helping.

Light without being airy, this adaptation of a novel about people, family and personal struggle is well done in a genre that of late is usually either under or overdone.

What makes 'The Secret' stand out is the evocative rawness, the non-verbal glimpses and the overall ability of the cast to tell a tale without ever looking like they're trying. It just flows and carries you along with it.

The result is a movie so charming and inspiring that it begs to reverse the usual trend of Hollywood remaking cinema europa gems. 'The Secret' will hold its own in any setting and language.

See it.

It was really pleasant
dashingmusic1 August 2020
It is really not amazing but it's pleasant and nice. Some movies make u wanna press the fast forward button but u kinda just breeze through the dull moments. Nice cinematography on some of the scenes and as for The Secret, it's kinda existed in the movie but not forced through.

A romantic film for grown ups

It is a romantic film for grown ups. It is not a comedy, but a film about real people and real lives. I enjoyed it.

Pretty basic but totally harmless and fine and, at times, even moving
Sir_AmirSyarif13 March 2021
Based on Rhonda Byrne's bestselling self-help book, Andy Tennant's 'The Secret: Dare to Dream' is a basic family drama at its core. It's about as clichéd as it gets. However, the movie itself is totally harmless and fine and, at times, even moving. And despite telling a story that basically deals with exploring the power of positive thoughts, the writing never gets preachy or overbearing. The performances from Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas are both effective with the rest of the cast also putting in fine performances.

My go to feel good film
sandra-9424916 April 2022
Watched this 3 times now. It is a romantic, feel good film, no nastiness, no swearing, no shouting etc. It's my new go to film when I need a bit of cheer.

Two good characters that are drawn together through circumstance, with the usual things that normally get in the way in any romantic film, but they get there in the end. Loved the lead actors.

Law of Attraction applied ??
paulsamuel-481772 August 2020
Was waiting for this movie ever since I heard about it. Got to see on the same day it got released. Being an ardent Secret follower and fan, the law of attraction and the major Secret nuances were very mildly sprinkled or applied overall. I would say that, this movie was a decent love story with fantastic cinematography, good performance by the all the major actors. The major cons of this movie is the casting which made a great impact. Starting from Katie Holmes, josh and the kids, everyone played their part very well and we could just move into their story. The background score also needs to be mentioned and went well with the movie. Though the story was straight forward with a predictable climax, never felt bored. Felt that the law of attraction could be more applied or showcased and depicted in the movie. The impact was very meagre in this and couldn't satiate Secret fans. But it's a complete family entertainer and could feel the positivity when the movie ends. It was so light and cheerful!!

Average chick flick, but do not trust men with power tools in their vehicle
orgbox18 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Pleasant enough, although the score was quite bland, and detracted from the film. It was never explained why a college lecturer, drove down to deliver a letter, with a boot full of high powered saws and tools, enough equipment to repair a roof. I would warn the ladies especially, if a guys driving round with these sort of tools, ideal for disposing a body, might be worth not inviting him into your house to meet your kids, especially when you find out that he is not a builder, but a lecturer.

Life is beautiful... when its come to be
katarina777729 January 2022
Life is full of struggles and trials. A small woman who herself holds a big house and three children, everything seems to be going wrong .... They missed their father very much ... And then a stranger lends a helping hand, inspires hope and makes the children believe in themselves, and Miranda felt magic ... And the real magic came: Love, success and happiness.

Never give up and keep dreaming. The film is worth watching with the whole family.

A little sappy, but still entertaining.
Top_Dawg_Critic27 January 2021
From the start of the film, I was seeing a nice stuffed crust pizza in my future. Ended up with lame ramen.

The story was cute, but the constant "Hallmark" score made the story overly sappy, so it was hard to take it seriously. The only thing missing was a Fabio character. The directing was decent, although some editing was bad. The cinematography was good, but the story, as mentioned, was a little sappy, predictable, and slow. The 107 min runtime felt much longer with the slow pacing and long dragged out scenes. This film needed faster pacing and about 15-20 mins shaved off. The "Secret" wasn't that evident - and didn't work for my pizza as well as it did for them, but nevertheless, great performances by all, and a nice way to pass the evening.

Most relatable line of the movie "I don't know what's happening here"
MollsandMills11 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film sounds like they threw words into hurricane hazel and what came out was the script.

We couldn't make heads nor tails of what was happening, who the people were, and why were in space at the end.

We felt like we were in therapy, with Therapist Bray coming out to play 😂

So many questions: why did nana try to eat the ring? Why did the eldest daughter act like no one else knew what s'mores were? Why didn't he just give the envelope to her at the beginning? Why did Bray run like that?

And what was with the music in some of those scenes? In one scene we literally find Bray fixing the house to melancholy music - your chopping mate, not putting down your dog.

Unexpectedly good
BlackCatStyle21 November 2020
I give it a 10 because I started watching it assuming it was worth a maximum of 5. It's warm, uplifting an beautifully casted. It's the first movie in a while I don't feel forced . Despite my expectations of seeing a chick flick, and it does mark some of its boxes , it's worth the view. It wasn't too sweet and the message was nice. Yes, it's cliche at times but for the first time in a long time it felt right. It's a nice movie , not a masterpiece but in a world of Netflix underdelivering it's a pleasant change.

Enjoyed the positive message...although a bit unrealistic
srobertson-7510330 March 2021
Yes, I liked the movie...watched it all the way through without getting bored. Yes, it was a little unrealistic, but I enjoyed watching a movie with a positive message and it was a relief not to get bombarded with profanity and blood and guts. I'm sure most people would love a complete stranger to come into their life, fix their house, car and finances. But that's what movies are for, right?

The acting was fine...but some of the scenes weren't totally believable and a little too "Polyanna".

I haven't really heard about "The Secret" since back in the day when Oprah had that whole series on it. I have been a big believer in the law of attraction, visualization, etc. Perhaps as I have gotten older and more comfortable, I haven't had the need to "fix" things in my life as when I was younger... so the self help genre isn't my thing anymore.

Overall, a good movie with a happy ending.

A Simple Premise...
nancyldraper27 September 2020
A simple premise, an inevitable ending, but a nice easy ride. I don't know whether it was the direction or the performance but this was not Katie Holmes greatest performance. I was never quite convinced she found her character. Beautiful cinematography rendering idyllic locations. An optimistic sentiment that reminded me of the story of the young girl, gleefully rooting in a room full of manure. When questioned why she was so happy, she replied, "With this much stuff in here there must be a pony, somewhere!" I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10. {Romantic Drama}

Yes, maybe predictable, but...
Australian11 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Early on in the movie I guessed they would end up together. But at one point I wasn't sure and I thought if it didn't end the way I felt I would be disappointed that it built up towards my expected conclusion. Ok, for a nice change we don't have mad sex starved females climbing all over some guy like it seems more than half the movies and TV shows have that as a prerequisite! No car chases, no blood, no guns, a movie a family can watch together When my kids were little, 3 girls and a boy who came a bit later, I used to look for a movie we could all watch on a Friday night, them on the floor in sleeping bags and their mother and I on the couch. It seemed easy enough to find something we would all enjoy and I am glad they are now adults, because I don't see much family oriented movies anymore! I gave it a seven, it can even deserve a bit more. The whole cast of actors are pleasant. Cheers

Uplifting, Warm, Satisfactory; Nothing Too Special
Zac_La_Porte23 September 2021
The Secret: Dare to Dream is a rather entertaining drama centring the impacts of positive mindsets. However, the romantic aspect is predictable and always feels needless. It slowly appears throughout a fascinating plot relating to a kind stranger lending help and comfort to a widow. It was foreseeable that there was going to be some sort of passionate love, but a singularly obvious theme thankfully does not destroy how uplifting the film is.

If anything is surely noticeable about this book adaptation, it's the comfort, coziness and spirit. Dare to Dream is a brilliant family feature worth saving for a snuggly-blankets movie-night. Again, the story is very nice and the characters are very likeable and appealing.

It's also the dramatic situations saved for the last 30 minutes that are very average components for family-targeted romance-dramas, although the film paces well towards the satisfying ending. Understandably, some people and even children will find the movie's focus quite dumb, but The Secret achieves what it was meant to do, without deserving big rewards or too much praise. It's really kind of uneasy to believe that the uplifting messages somehow had an impact on some people.

A feel good movie with some elements of 'The Secret' but not forceful
emmanuellebarone2 August 2020
What a nice movie! Very well acted, funny, romantic and uplifting.

I read the book and can confirm from my way of life that the quantum physics of the law of attraction, our thoughts create our life, is definitely working. It is not forceful in this movie though, just seeds planted here and there.. gentle and soft like the warm sunshine in the spring..

This movie is for everyone, anytime, with or without popcorn! Enjoy!

Saccharin soap opera for the suckers
supergye26 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie relies on plot holes to make it work. Ridiculous amounts of stupidity must be relied upon in order for Katie Holmes character Miranda to succumb to her victim like livelihood. She comes across as both tired, and lacking in commonsense. Living in a place she appears to have zero knowledge how to maintain all the while raising three kids as a widowed mother. She bumps into the main attraction Josh Lucas aka Bray a good Samaritan who takes giving to a whole new level. All the while Miranda is filled with suspicion since her life is going so well (sarcasm)she figures she should still rely on intuition that has not served her so well. Bray is a bit annoying with his continued unsolicited sage advice which he gives out more than Gandhi.

Spoilers: Of course, the entire movie would have been over in 15 minutes had Bray explained why he visited the sleepy town. Being that he is a teacher at Vanderbilt, you would think explaining things would be in his wheelhouse. Yet this is held off until much later. Just like a true soap opera. Also, why does Bray live in a mansion? This is never explained. We only can assume he did well in selling his adapted patent, or patents. When her house was damaged from the storm, why couldn't Miranda and kids stick around for a while and chip in with Bray? This was a huge turn-off for me. It made her look lazy and looking for everyone to give her a handout. In the end, she finally turns her self around and rights her ship. But the fairytale ending was completely unnecessary and a true Hallmark, Disney type ending going into the fantasy realm. There should almost be a disclaimer at the end saying: This is all complete b.s. And will never happen to you.

A tedious romance lifted by a good cast
habakukofice1 August 2020
I had no idea when I watched it that this was meant to be a sequel, or that it had any mystical implications, because it really is just an empty, Hallmark style, film about a love triangle.

The cast is good, even the child actors are more than adequate, but the movie has nothing original to offer.

Cheesy, predictable but pleasant
fallyhag9 August 2020
I hesitated watching this because the trailer felt like a bible production. But I gave it a go and did enjoy it during a sleepy Sunday afternoon.

Both the lead actors are strong and I believed the connection. The standout for me was the son. A unique look and good actor.

The story was a pile of cheese loaded with a side order of more cheese. The reveal was guessed within the first 10 mins of the film but it didn't ruin anything. There is nothing new in the story but the coincidences from the positive thinking were funny. The core message was strong and helped carry the story.

This film is recommended just for the chemistry and the message. If it helps one person then that's great.

Warning (spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
So the family is struggling financially, and along comes a stranger with a mysterious letter. I was waiting for this movie to finally get released, but once I got into the movie, I found it too predictable. Of course her dead husband left her money. Of course the blonde is his sister, not girlfriend.
