Dipper must aid Pacifica because weird stuff is happening at their annual Northwest estate party for the rich and privileged.

An amazing return episode with the great staples this series is now known for. Great humour, Dark themes with a good dose of horror, great visuals and a plot with actual depth and surprise.

Season 2 has mainly been about fleshing out the inhabitants of the town and less on the overall mystery of the mystery shack and the journals. I for one love this as most stories have been flawless in their execution.

Saying that, this might be one of the best ones yet with a great twist on our preconceived notion of Pacifica and her amazing growth coming outta this. It also gave us one of the best villains on the show (in a show filled with great villains) with the Northwest family and legacy (those paintings were incredible and ballsy).

Best joke: Get it', get it!

Tapping into Real World Socioeconomic Class Issues, on Both Sides
teddyhose20 March 2020
This was my favorite episode of the series so far. Pacifica is the token self-centered rich girl, but is tested on breaking that persona to save the day. The real world portrayal on the rich taking advantage of the working class, invalidating them socially while the latter asks the former to be human and keep up their end of the deal, is really beautifully depicted here. Also, the depiction of rich parents demanding their kids fall in line with their expectations, surrendering their autonomy begrudgingly to sustain a family's legacy, likewise reflects the pressures on the other side of the tracks. The depth in this one is good enough for it to be its own movie, and would get my vote for an Emmy. It actually made me a bit emotional.

One scene also seems like a reference to Evil Dead 2, and that's the cherry on top for me.

An Awesome Spooky Episode with a Great Redemption
travelertoon9 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Note: I originally wanted to post this in October, but I was too busy with other stuff and couldn't go to IMDB. But here I am posting a review on this great Gravity Falls episode. Also in this review I'm dividing my sections more and this is a very late Halloween review.

This episode is about Pacifica inviting Dipper to a fancy party in the Northwest Mansion to stop the Lumberjack Ghost. The side plot is about Mabel and her 2 friends getting invited to the party by Dipper, where they try to attract a young baron. This episode is just fantastic, especially on being a great redemption episode for Pacifica and learning more about her.

Animation: Does a good job on showing the dark atmosphere. This includes the mansion itself and how fancy it is. Blood coming out of the taxidermy animal heads' mouths saying, "Ancient Sins!" To how the Lumberjack Ghost shows up where fire appears.

Plot and writing: It's a great, spooky, mystery episode. Dipper and Pacifica work well together as a team by finding the ghost and stopping him. A great redemption episode for Pacifica, will explain more in the character section. The subplot with Mabel, Grenda and Candy in the party was cute. There are some funny jokes, but this episode does a great job on showing how serious stuff are: how crazy the ghost is and Pacifica's dad abusing her with a bell.

Characters: The starring characters here are greatly written and most of them likable. I hate Pacifica's parents: Preston and to a lesser extent Priscilla, they are abusive, snobbish parents who psychologically abuse Pacifica like a dog, but they are made to be hateable. Also Mabel, Candy and Grenda were fun here. As well as the Lumberjack Ghost, who may be tragic, but is still an incredibly dangerous villain.

The main best characters here are Dipper and Pacifica. Dipper being his heroic detective self, who was wary of Pacifica but convinces her to be a better girl. Pacifica for having a great redemption where she learns of her family's misdeeds, stands up to her abusive dad and does a heroic act by saving the party guests by letting the common folks into the party. These two make a good team, became friends and yes I am a Dipcifica shipper.

Overall "Northwest Mansion Mystery" is an awesome episode. The animation is great especially in showing the dark atmosphere that takes place. The plot is a great mystery episode that does a good job in being dark or scary (whether it's the ghost or Preston ringing his bell) and some funny jokes. The characters (except Preston and his wife; they're hateable) whether Mabel, Candy, Grenda, Dipper and especially Pacifica; with her great redemption are really likable. This episode has nothing I hate about it, so it gets a 10/10.

Warning: Spoilers
My personal favorite episode of Gravity Falls :)

1: The redemption Dipper and Pacifica were awesome as the heroes and Pacifica's redemption was amazing (though she kinda lost it in weirdmagedon) Without this episode Dipcifica wouldn't exist, admit it.

2: Horror Has the perfect amount of horror and humor. I was watching every second, and it was all amazing.

3: Continuity This episode starts Dipcifica, Grenda and Marius, Pacifica's rebellion towards her parents, and Dipper learning that the might be some people he CAN trust. So much would be missing without this episode.

Overall, AMAZING!!!!

Great BUT

The B plot in this episode is one of the worst in the entire series. Still, character development!

Awesome visual design wasted, dropped this episode towards the end

Warning: Spoilers
My overall rating of "Gravity Falls"'s Season 2: 2/10.

So the scene of Dipper and Pacifica's first encounter with the ghost is absolutely breathtaking: it's beautifully drawn and very dark, wouldn't at all be out of place in a more serious horror work. The way the ghost emerges from the fireplace legitimately invokes a cutscene for some cool "Dark Souls" boss. The Northwest Mansion is a cool and stylish setting for the episode, and Dipper and Pacifica have chemistry as characters. But again, like in the previous episode (and like in the upcoming "Weirdmageddon 2: Escape from reality" with its freaking awesome "fake Wendy falling apart into worms while pointing as the world itself goes "Silent-Hill"" scene), these awesome, atmospheric visuals are wasted on this toddler-targeted hogwash.

Now, looking at this scene where the hunting trophies chant "Ancient sins" as blood pours from their eyes and maws, does it quite track that the ancient sins in question are that some lumberjacks weren't invited to a party? I mean, the show shows the lumberjack's death and environmental destruction - wouldn't these two be better sins? But then they couldn't quite cram in some stupid moral lesson quite as easily, could they? And look, I'm a person very sympathetic to left-wing politics, I am, but surely vandalism-and-lumpens-worship of this episode is taking things a bit too far? Frankly, why are Americans so unable to even entertain the idea of taking their dirty shoes off while inside?! And wouldn't Pacifica be a way more interesting character without the bog-standard "defection from decadence" plotline? Another question is - since when does Dipper have fame as a ghostbuster of some kind, and has technological equipment (!) to help?! Is that a misplaced and belated episode of "Extreme ghostbusters" (god I wish it was, it would actually be _so_ dope)?!

Mabel and her revolting friends continue to be a mistake as well.
