A clever locked room mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon13 September 2018
After the fairly average previous episode, The Standing Stones, the series gets back on track with the very fine Paradise of Thieves. It's a very good episode all in all. One of the cleverest stories in the show's history, it's an intriguing plot, with clever twists and turns, definitely one that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Some very good characters, some fine acting. Nice to see William Gaminara out of his mortician's overalls, he's good in this.

There are of course some nonsensical moments, the scene where Sid steals and returns the Guard's keys for example is beyond silly, but it all adds to the light hearted feel of the show.

A very fine episode. 8/10

Sid is brilliant

Yes this is a good episode. I like the vault trickery. But mostly, this is the episode that convinced me what a great actor Alex Price is (Sid). Watch the scene in the vault with Father and Sid--it takes him just a look, no words, to be brilliantly funny.

Banking on it

Warning: Spoilers
Kirsty Besterman guest stars in The Paradise of Thieves, which is close to the end of the third season of Father Brown. Anyway, this has kind of a bank heist feel to it and I almost expected one of the characters to exclaim, "She was only sixteen!"

Anyway, there's quite a few twists and turns in this bank heist mystery, and it's hard to believe this episode first screened in 2015 as it's quite timeless and that init.

I'm enjoying catching up on the early seasons of Father Brown and also Magnum, P. I.. They make great daytime viewing. What else, I can't wait for Bunty to finally make her appearance.

The Paradise of Thieves

An interesting mystery that kept me guessing as Father Brown and Mrs McCarthy are in the bank requesting a contribution from a trust fund from the bank manager, Mr Harrogate to fix the church roof.

While this is happening the bank is held up by armed robbers, when the bank vault is opened they find a dead body, Billy the son in law of Mr Harrogate who is immediately suspected of his killing.

It transpires that Billy was a bit dodgy and Harrogate was covering up for him. It was no accident that Father Brown was at the bank just as the robbery was about to take place. The scenes of Mrs McCarthy telling off the armed robbers was rather silly though.

Great show except

Sullivan is an annoying stupid idiot. He ruins this otherwise good show. I just keep waiting for him to be thrown out. If it moves he arrests it. No reason his stupidity is annoying.

Very average locked room murder

Warning: Spoilers
GK Chesterton's original was a wonderful story, full of passion and style, about the political and social situation in Italy and the solving of a bank mystery while Father Brown was on holiday with a friend. What I saw tonight was a boring case about a murder in a bank in England, with bad dialogue, yet more anachronisms and unbelievable characters. Why did they even bother? Complete tosh.
