Jazbaa – A Tale of Two Mothers
sctharan-30-10416425 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
When I first heard that Aishwarya Rai was back on the silver screen after a five year hiatus, I immediately checked out the trailer for the movie Jasbaa. There seemed to be an overuse of the green filter but also featured some great action scenes. What tweaked my interest even more was to find two other Bollywood legends, Irrfan Khan and Shabana Azmi were also starring. If you did what I did next and watched the music video for Bandeyya, where Aish is like Venus descended, you will be fooled as none of those scenes nor locations were featured in the movie.

Filmed close to perfection in terms of pacing, timing and dialogue, Sanjay Gupta has taken the story from the Korean film, Seven days (2007) and delivers this simple plot line of a mother's desperate need to save her daughter in four days! Single mother, Anuradha Verma's daughter is kidnapped. The ransom is not for cash, but for the services of Anuradha's expertise legal maneuvers as a prominent defense (criminal) lawyer, who has never lost a case, to acquit a death row prisoner on appeal, Miyaaz Shaikh (Chandan Roy Sanyal). Miyaaz, convicted for the rape and murder of Sia, a young art student, has all the evidence pointing to him. Surprisingly, Anuradha agrees. Suspended police officer and long time friend of Anuradha, Inspector Yohaan joins her quest to re-investigate Miyaaz's case to save Anuradha's daughter. We meet Garima, a headstrong lady, Sia's mother, who wants nothing more than to see Miyaaz punished for his crime. There are a slew of other characters that make the legal and investigatory journey, a thrilling one, notably Sam (Siddhanth Kapoor), a drug crazed classmate and boyfriend of Sia, who later transpires to be part of he crime. You will spend the interval, wondering, what twist lie ahead and most of the second half of the movie will be spent second guessing what the purpose of the acquittal of Miyazz serves. I guarantee you will be surprised at the end. Don't stop watching when the credit's start as there is a short epilogue, wrapping up Anuradha and Yohaan's relationship. And the film's final message of the fight against rape in India is a great message that needs to be applauded.

Sanjay Gupta's green filter signature style is a little disturbing at first but I found that it worked well with this movie, setting the tone and mood of the scenes. There were other filming aspects which worked well, especially the interesting aerial shots, the dark clouds shrouding Mumbai's skyline in background shots, the amazing lighting design, especially in a night time fight scene between Yohann and Vijay, another convict. Some may find the dialogs a little preposterous, but I found that they were relevant as in real life, we do say and react sillily. Irrfan and Shabana's parts were better written and executed; Irrfan for his delivery of over the top dialogs with flair and Shabana, was on fire in the final scene as well as the one where she finds out that Anuradha, who she believed was on her side, is now defending her daughter's killer. Aishwraya's performance hasn't changed much from before. She is reasonable good in the part but there are parts of the film is performed with a dead stare in her eyes, and the roar of a lion. Perhaps, that is how Sanjay Gupta wanted her role to be played. She screams a helluva lot in this movie, so be prepared!

What boggles the mind is the insertion of two songs in a thriller movie that can do without. OK, the hip hop, Badshah's Aaj Raat Ka Scene happens in a nightclub so that was acceptable. The courtroom scenes and reenactment of the murder scene were great. There were some witty lines in the courtroom scene, where the two advocates battling out the case, whilst the judge was virtually asleep.

My recommendation is that Jasbaa falls short of being in the league of some great movies this year, but still a watchable and enjoyable one. This 119 minute film will keep you entertained enough.

Gupta's new genre a masala thriller, at times too over the top at times good. Jazbaa has a great final message though.
jmoneyjohal9 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Aishwarya Rai makes her comeback after being away from the big screen for 5 years, and Sanjay Gupta is back after the mediocre Shootout At Wadala. So expectations for Jazbaa are not humongous, but they are above average because both actor and filmmaker boast of a pretty good resume. And for the most part Jazbaa is a highly watchable, and enjoyable thriller. Its not very edge of the seat, maybe barring a scene or two, but the acting makes up for those minuses, with a cast that includes of Irfan Khan, and Shabana Azmi you will more than enjoy the performances. But Jazbaa is somewhere stuck between being, a realistic gritty drama, and a over the top commercial entertainer. This is because there many cheesy over the top dialogues, the films melodramatic to the core, and logic takes a back seat at many times. But when Mr. Khan enters the scene the film gets some credibility back. Also the films final message is a good one, but more on that later.

Story wise the film is about a lawyer named Anuradha Verma, who believes in fighting cases for money, therefore most of time she is setting murders and other criminals free. She has a impeccable record, Anuradha Verma is one of the best lawyers in India. One day while at her daughters track meet at school, her daughter gets kidnapped out nowhere. Anuradha is then left in tears, and about a day later she gets a call from a unknown person saying that if she wants her daughter back, she has to fight a case, and make sure a murder, and rapist is set free. She then with help of her friend the suspended police Inspector Yohan, try to free the murder/rapist, and get her daughter back.

Acting wise Aishwarya Rai, was very good, but at times she is very loud and melodramatic, but I guess that was the directors demand. Irfan Khan was at his massy hero best, and delivered the over the top dialogues with flair. Shabana Azmi, was great, but in the films climax, she her real fire. Chandan Roy Sanyal was good.

Jazbaa is very over the top, its very melodramatic, and its dialogues are hit or miss, at times fiery, at times so cheesy you will end up laughing. But all that is fine for a commercial entertainer, but where the film fails is that films twists don't really ever leave you stunned, and the films climax twist is a joke, it didn't work for me. And Abhimanyu Singh's character Abbas is just so bad its hilarious, like straight out of 80s bwood film. But a lot of the ground is made up by the good acting, and the films razor sharp edit, its racy narration film. Also the film never bores, its very enjoyable for the most part, and its shot very in a very niche but nice way.The films final message of the fight against rape in India is a great message that needs to be applauded.

Overall Jazbaa is a one time watch, but one excepts more from Sanjay Gupta, because he is the man who made films like Kaante, Plan, and Musfair etc but I mean for the masses, and women wanting to watch a film thats speaks about women empowerment, Jazbaa will be a very enjoyable watch, just keep your expectations in check.

Stylish, but Souless!
namashi_19 October 2015
A remake of the 2007 South Korean film Seven Days, 'Jazbaa' Directed by Sanjay Gupta, is a stylish thriller, but sadly, its soulless! Though not without its share of moments & a cast that willingly delivers, this visually striking film, lacks depth.

'Jazbaa' Synopsis: After her daughter is kidnapped, An idealistic lawyer has to defend & bail out a heinous criminal, in order to get her child back. She's accompanied by a disgraced cop, who realizes there is much more to what's happening, than what it appears to be.

'Jazbaa' begins tepidly & remains dull for its most of its first-hour, but it gathers tremendous momentum in its second-hour. The pace is fast & the visual appeal holds. But, Gupta's Adapted Screenplay appeals in bits & pieces. The Protagonist's struggle to win back her daughter, with many twists & turns, sometimes arrest, but are predictable otherwise. Though the climax, is well-done. The corny dialogue, however, seem too filmy for a thriller such as this.

Gupta's Writing needed to have more force! Gupta's Direction, on the other-hand, is stylized. Sameer Arya's Cinematography is stark. Editing is decently done. Background Score is a bit too loud. Action-Sequences are ordinary.

Performance-Wise: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returns on-screen after a hiatus & the actress is very sincere in her portrayal of a desperate mother. But its Irrfan Khan who steals the show. Despite being given the most filmy lines, the fantastic actor has a ball playing the cop. Shabana Azmi is quite effective, while Chandon Roy Sanyal hams it up as the convict. Atul Kulkarni is first-rate, as always. Siddhanth Kapoor & Jackie Shorff are wasted.

On the whole, 'Jazbaa' isn't a bad watch, but it could've been sharper nonetheless!

A suspense-soaked version of Daag The Fire
jmathur_swayamprabha12 October 2015
Jazbaa is termed as the copy of a Korean movie Seven Days (2007). However after watching it, I am able to contrast the theme of Jazbaa with an old Bollywood movie - Daag The Fire (1999) starring Sanjay Dutt, Chandrachur Singh and Mahima Chaudhary which was directed by Raj Kanwar. While all the reviewers are singing in chorus that Jazbaa is the Indian version of Seven Days, not a single one is pointing out that Seven Days itself could be inspired by the Bollywood movie - Daag The Fire. The scripts are different, no doubt but the theme and the undercurrent is the same. Jazbaa is looked upon as a thriller based on the issue of rape but in fact, the real theme of Jazbaa is different. It's the story of a corrupt lawyer whose personal tragedy proves as an eye-opener for her. The same is the theme of Daag The Fire though there is no suspense element in Daag The Fire like this movie. The role played by Aishwarya Rai in Jazbaa is akin to the role played by Chandrachur Singh in Daag The Fire. And anybody can verify this fact that the final interaction of Aishwarya Rai and Shabana Aazmi in Jazbaa is a ditto of the final shot of Daag The Fire involving Chandrachur Singh and Sanjay Dutt. Then who is a copycat ? Is the maker of Jazbaa only who has unfortunately earned the ill-repute of lifting stories of his movies from foreign movies ? But the thief is always the one who gets caught. Whosoever knows the trick of the trade, i.e., not to get caught escapes the stigma of being called a thief.

Now for the assessment of Jazbaa. It's a quality suspense-thriller though the filmmaker, i.e., Sanjay Gupta has focused more on style than substance.

As clarified in the opening para of this review, Jazbaa is the story of a corrupt lawyer (Aishwarya Rai) who takes the cases of the outlaws and the guilty only in order to earn handsomely which is not possible by fighting for some cause or ensuring justice to innocents. However when her daughter is kidnapped, this lawyer who is a single mother, finds the world as upside down for her. With the help of her silent lover who is a suspended cop (Irrfan), she pays the ransom not in cash but in kind which is to get a convict of rape and murder free from not only the gallows but also prison. The bulk of the story goes in the efforts of this lawyer-cum-bereaved mother and her silent lover. On one hand, they are busy in arranging evidences in favour of the convict, on the other, they are busy in searching for the kidnapped child. What happens in the end, proves to be an eye-opener for the corrupt lawyer.

Though the director Sanjay Gupta has not done proper justice to the good stuff at his hand, the movie is nevertheless gripping right from the word 'go' to the climax. The issue of rape is imposed on the script and the data of this crime given in the end are useless and irrelevant. Actually the focus should have been on the corruption in the profession of law when reputed lawyers become defense counsels for the people guilty of heinous crimes like rape and murder for the sake of getting exorbitant fees from their clients. But the director has not done so. There are 'n' number of plot-holes and untied loose ends alongwith inconsistencies and contradictions in the script and many things are not clarified till the very end, the most prominent of which is the mastermind's getting complete information of every move of the lawyer after the kidnapping of her daughter. How could it be possible ? Sanjay Gupta may be knowing. The audience couldn't make it out even after watching the complete movie. Besides, Sanjay Gupta only must be knowing the relevance of the title of this movie which has nothing to with its story.

All the same, the movie works because of its pace. The fast pace of the narrative does not give any time to the audience to pause and think. The viewer just keep on watching while holding his breath. Besides, this is not a pure thriller. It's a suspense-thriller. The suspense element has been kept intact till the climax which is a big achievement of the director.

No songs are required in this type of movie because songs only interrupt the flow of the fast-moving narrative. All the same, Jaane Tere Sheher Ka Kya Iraada Hai is quite impressive in terms of both lyrics and composition (plus Irrfan's performance on that).

This is termed as the comeback movie of Aishwarya Rai and her admirers are going gaga over her performance in this movie. However though the aging actress is quite beautiful even in her forties and post motherhood in her real life, her performance is so-so only. Those who are admiring her performance are not able to differentiate between acting and shrieking. Despite being a heroine-centric movie, Irrfan takes the cake as far as the clapping and accolades of the audience are concerned. However it's Shabana Aazmi who is the best performer though she is definitely miscast for the role of the mother of a teenager (being in her sixties, she straightaway looks as the grandma of a teenager).

While advising all the reviewers to check the facts properly before terming any Indian movie as a copy of some foreign movie because almost all are copycats now (including both the Indian and the foreign filmmakers) sending originality for a toss, I recommend this fast-paced engrossing movie to all those who are fond of suspense-thrillers. It will prove to be no less than a roller-coaster ride for them.

Warning: Spoilers
Jazbaa, an action-drama film directed by Sanjay Gupta, stars Irrfan Khan and Shabana Azmi in supporting roles and you know who is in lead! With the Spoilers' warning I'm gonna start the review.

Okay so the film tells the story of Anuradha Verma (A.R. Bacchan) is a prominent lawyer, who has yet to lose a case. And then her daughter disappears. Later in the day, Anuradha receives a phone call from the man who abducted her daughter. The man makes it clear that the only way she will ever see her daughter again is to defend a convicted felon who is appealing his conviction in Court. Anuradha has only few days before his trial ends. She is warned not to go to the cops because the abductor will be closely watching all her moves. Anuradha's cop friend Yohan (irrfan Khan), a suspended policeman, finds out about the abduction and decides to help her. Anuradha has to race against time to save her daughter. All she has are few days. And do watch the movie to know what happens next (Though the climax is predictable enough). This movie is a remake of a Korean movie named "Seven Days".

Performances:

Okay! I'm of the opinion that A.R. Bacchan couldn't have chosen a better film to come back after her five-year long break and A.R. Bacchan is in a character that isn't close to anything she has done before. Several times the supporting casts (Irrfan Khan and Shabana Azmi) did lift the scenes to a higher note. When it's a matter of Mr. Sanjay Gupta, how can someone miss unwanted and unnecessary item song. It movie includes 'car chasing' too. I do think editing could have been done in more intelligent way, though its decent. This movie has a time-span of 120 minutes only! I don't know why did Mr. Kamlesh Pandey missed the essence of the movie sometimes. Serious story-line with funny dialogues.

Other technical faults:

• Mental asylum and Rehab centers aren't same.

• Suspended cop aren't allowed to order juniors.

• Little continuity faults (you can ignore).

Wrapping up:

Go for :

• Story

• Acting of Irrfan Khan and Shabana Azmi and A.R. Bacchan.

Bypass it for:

• Try hard to feel suspense (For movie buffers).

For me it's : 3***/5 (considering overall movie. Though Irfan, A.R. Bacchan, S. Azmi deserves 4.5*)

hanging mystery
deep_hz12 October 2015
of course the premise of the movie is very clear from the trailer- a defense attorney's daughter is kidnapped and she is forced to defend a rape, murder accused in exchange of her daughter's release. in the movie, the mystery about the kidnapper and the reason for this strange request is very well built up. the audience is kept guessing about this until the end. in addition there are some more twists in the movie which make the story even more interesting.

but by the time the movie's ending approaches, all these begin to crumble. 1st of all when the mystery is finally revealed you'll think "this is it? is this the best logic the writer could think of behind this whole mystery drama?" the solution doesn't look at all convincing and is one of the stupidest i could think of. secondly all the other twists in the movie turn out to be nothing. their whole purpose was to build up the mystery, but adds nothing to the actual solution. looks like the writer concentrated so much on the mystery build up that he forgot about the actual solution.

there are other stupid mistakes in the movie (which i can't tell without giving out spoilers), but even then i was thinking that these were typical of any bollywood movie and was hoping at least the climax would be good. but ultimately it turned out to be one of the worst waste of time for me.

I also found that it's a remake of a Korean film, but i don't know how faithful the film makers were to the original story.

Green Jazbaa
iamsharif-721558 October 2015
The movie is a copy of a Korean movie Seven days, the movie starts of on a sordid note where a hot shot lawyer, single mother played by Aishwarya Rai has this habit of winning her cases in which she defends the rich who are on the wrong side of the law.

She is seen as can do all mother to start with and then starts the journey of her emotional breakdown with the kidnapping of her daughter on her sports day. Enters Irffan Khan who can even light up Sanjay Gupta's green lens movie, he is charged and suspended by his peers ans asked to pay up an ex amount to get his name cleared. Irffan and Aishwarya Rai are child hood friends who are interlocked as one needs to help the other to get her daughter and the other to clean his name. The movie picks up pace and direction and on their journey bumps into a mother in despair who has just lost her young daughter to a rapist who has been punished with capital punishment and is interconnected to their case without she being aware is being pulled in it by the day. The plot dwells into the corrupt ways of our how our power system breaks and buys the law with their bundles and also beats the system. Irffan Khan is compelling and makes it a walk in the park with his punch lines, Shabana Azmi after a gap comes back in true color and echoes the pain well, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan commendable effort starts off rusty but pulls through. Crisp editing, background needs more than Azaans and direction could have been tighter especially since it is lifted and could have been adapted better, missed the Sanjay Gupta music even if it was a score played in the background.

Loved the movie
info-3325817 March 2016
Loved the movie. It offers a fair share of suspense, mystery & excitement. A change from the romantic stories & ordinary comic. Was good to see Aishwarya after a long spell and Irrfan in his unique style is incredible. In his inimitable style he comes across as a hero and one can't imagine the plot playing out as well with anyone else in his place. Aishwarya's performance in The scene under the flyover, when her daughter is taken away was par excellence. Loved the Om Bracelet Aishwarya is wearing. To see Om Bracelets like Aishwarya visit https://www.jewelslane.com/bracelets/om/gold-thread-om Look forward to see more from both Aishwarya & Irrfan.

an adrenaline rush time waster.....
SumanShakya5 November 2016
With "Jazbaa," Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes a comeback in movies as a criminal lawyer, who defends a case of a rapist and murderer as a ransom to flee her kidnapped daughter. The film is said to be based on a Korean crime thriller "Seven Days" (haven't watched the movie). The pace is fast and the events succeeds before you have a time to think. Aishwarya Rai's voice has been kept loud and fast, and it appears less that she's a lawyer who is defending a case. Aishwarya Rai is a fabulous actress but she appears a bit miscast for the role. Others like Irfan Khan, Shabana Azmi, Jackie Shroff, all brilliant actors, do little to make an impression though Irfan Khan gets a higher footage and plays well. Though the film is fast paced, gets you with adrenaline rush and surprises, by the end the film just doesn't touch you. Neither the film claims any relevance to the social reform or touches the emotions for which the audiences find it mere a watchable time waster.

Excellent engaging thriller
ishraqgarnier16 October 2015
Really enjoyed a highly Intense thriller with a great twist. The acting was superb, Aishwarya, Irfan Khan and Shabana Azmi played their roles superbly, the film also raised some important social issues around treatment of women. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat and takes you through a roller-coaster ride as you feel the emotions going through the main character played by Aishwarya. Irfan Khan is charismatic as ever proving why he is one the finest and sought after Actors in the world. Overall believable and compelling characters in unbelievable yet fascinating situations. Plot twists that leave you stunned and amazed at having the rug spectacularly pulled out from under your feet. Suspense scenes that, spectacular though they might be, serve to strengthen the storyline. And, most of all, this is the kind of story that grips you like a vice, never knowing what's coming until the very end.

One time watch for Irrfan and his one liners.
maulin512 October 2015
Aishwarya Rai's comeback movie, featuring Irrfan and Shabana Aazmi, and directed by Sanjay Gupta. Not a great movie, but, I can't say about minus points. The length of the movie is perfect. The pace is good. Every second of the movie is engaging. Story is not new, but, then also it's enjoyable. Aishwarya gives as per her role. As she has given the performance which was acceptable in those days, but now a days it looks like overacting somehow. Though she looks good. Shabana and Atul Kulkarni are perfectly suitable for the role. Jackie Shroff and Sidhhant Kapoor play cameo roles. One of the biggest plus point is dialogues. And especially those, which were delivered by Irrfan. No doubt, he is tremendous. He is funny too in some of the scenes. His eyes are mesmerizing. He is one of the best actors of the decade. Direction is good. Film looks like a greenish or yellowish painting. Cinematography is good, but, in some parts, it is little bit of shaky. On the whole, definitely a one time watch movie, for Irrfan and one liners. Though, Aishwarya's fans can go too. "Mohabbat hai isiliye jaane diya, zid hoti, to baahon me hoti!"

The direction is so bad it made me stop playing a video game to watch it
k-mysta26 September 2020
Where do I start with this film? I had initially put this film on for my gran to watch whilst I payed away on my laptop. Despite being occupied by the game, I couldn't help my attention being drawn to the screen multiple times, and ended up getting drawn into it. Now, in a normal situation, this would be because the film is so good, it begs to be watched. In this instance though, it was mostly because I was completely befuddled by the filmmaking choices being made.

First of all, the tint/filter! The film has a very weird greenish filter to it. My guess is to kind of ground it into a gritty atmosphere, but it's very distracting, and there are multiple points in the film where this, combined with the poor lighting leads to very jarring scenes. Just awful.

Second, what the hell is up with the camera work? The film breaks several reasonable rules to follow when filmmaking. A very simple one, for example, is how to shoot two characters in a conversation. You'd usually film their talking heads in sequence of the conversation, but on opposite sides of the screen when showing their heads. Now, this is a loose rule, and you can be creative, of course, but this film makes some very questionable choices. There's a scene where Jackie Shroff is talking to some weasel whilst leaning into the right side of the screen, and the other dude is shot with his head in the hard left of the screen. Why? This is just one example, but in general, the camerawork and cinematography is just poor. I have seen better camerawork in student films.

Then there's the editing, the actor's direction for some scenes etc. All shoddy. You may think me overly harsh, especially if you enjoyed this film, but the reason this particularly irked me is because the film has some good actors and a decent plot to work with (writing somewhat dodgy as well, but let's ;leave that for now). This film could have been so, so much better if a careful hand had tended to it. The actors deserved better than this.

Blind Spot of Law and Order
annisasafanta21 October 2015
Can't say much. I was focused on the law and order. In how this is Aish's comeback after maternity leave. Irrfan K's movie, and they made it cool.

I will break down the things in some segments. First, casts. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Irrfan Khan. Good point. My intention was Irrfan, who ever regret watching his movies? Furthermore, we got Aish at her best form. I love her. She's dazzling. She's that hot, as always. Some major actors like Jackie Shroff and Shabana Azmi was good in their part, especially the last name appears. Second, story. It is good, but do not have a bold reason to show. Whether it is an agony of a mother whom her child has been abused (to death) or simply talking about rape and murder. It just blundering some. Third, added value. I think it'll be more tactical movie, in how Shabana Azmi took a major part to the film. Even, mini romance between Aish and Irrfan unintentionally developed, but it is just a miss.

And yeah. This is my review about Jazbaa. It is just do not have a clear intention, whether it wants to show about rape and murder case, or revenge, or law and order. We have various movies like Jolly LLB in Law and Order form. No body killed Jessica, even, Rahasya would make great case of murder.

It is just... a waste of time, but Irffan K never fail us (or it is just me?).

Anyway, that's it.

Combination of Emotions and Suspense
makkusidhu10 October 2015
Sharafat ki duniya ka ek sahi kadam, ab jesi duniya wese hum...With awesome come back of beauty queen Ashwariya as criminal lawyer Anuradha Verma, Irfan again proved that he is unbeatable with his character of a corrupt police inspector Yohan. I will must say they played these roles like no one can do it better. You can feel the real characters. Apart from them the senior guys did there job well. Movie has many layers and the awesome thing is that you don't have to wait to unfold any layer. It holds you so well in the end of first half that you can feel that why interval is so long? Movie is full of emotions, suspense and drama.

Advocate Anuradha took a case of a convicted felon who has charges of rape and murder of a girl to save her kidnapped daughter. She took help of his school friend suspended inspector Yohan to fight back. Screenplay was good and music made sense and with proper timings. Dialogues of Irfan Khan are additional flavors. Movie also showed the face of our judicial system where any big lawyer can save any criminal with there skills and power.

The movie is all about love and affection of mother child relation. It shows how a mother can cross all limits for her child. It also shows how bad a mother can be with this world when it comes to her own child. When you do not have trust in our system then you have to take your call for your child and this what story all about.

The story is remake of a Korean movie but Sanjay Gupta did a good job for the viewers. In the end it is a good watch. Ash and Irfan did not disappoint there fans. Bollywood movie fans will gonna love it.

League Of Extraordinary Screamers. ♦ Grade D-
nairtejas9 October 2015
Take a city, add bombastic dialogs, add lots of green, and you get a Sanjay Gupta Film. Take the recipe, add an actress who had a hiatus of at least 5 years, and you get Jazbaa. Had it been 7 years, you would have got Jazbaaa, 8 then Jazzbaaa, 9 then Jjazzbaaa, and so on, but that's not the issue here.

After showing the audience that she is fit and fine to come back to the screen by running through Marine Drive, Bachchan starts portraying the roles of a criminal lawyer, a marathon sprinter, a helicopter mom, and a Gold medalist screamer. Boy, she can scream anywhere, anytime, and at anybody. Suddenly, her school-going daughter is kidnapped by a tech-savvy abductor-cum-hacker-cum-righteous mamzer who demands that she fight the case of a convicted drug dealer and let him walk free.

To our surprise, she agrees to pay the unique ransom, and helping her in her child-saving mission is her childhood friend (really?), rustily played by Khan who is himself fighting an alleged graft case for heck's sake. What follows is neither new to our thriller senses nor is novel by any of its look-good approaches.

Throwing green and more green at you just because it's your signature style does not work anymore. We have reached Mars, for god's sakes. Apart from those delivered by Khan, all the dialogs are preposterous. Do you think you would scream "Where are you?" to a kidnapper who has just abducted your baby? Mr. Gupta does.

Mrs. Bachchan's performance is particularly cringe-worthy as she moves here and there with a dead stare in her eyes and a lion's roar for a throat. Reacting throughout the film like you hate everybody is not the appropriate type of characterization that one adds into a story whose climax is more apparent than the actors' ages. The protagonist plays a lawyer who only defends known, guilty offenders because, she claims, "those who are not guilty cannot afford her." With this attitude, I had Arybhatta's greatest invention of cares to give.

The screenplay is a hot mess. Trying to slip in few songs between a thriller film is the lowest thing Gupta has done for Jazbaa. There's even a hip hop song by Badshah somewhere which had great similarities with his number in Khoobsurat. It reminded me of its actress and I was done for the day.

Courtroom sequences are nicely carved jokes here, where the judge is sleeping and the advocates themselves reaching a verdict, even making few educated guesses in front of him; it was unintentional humor. They are so bad that just these sequences can be tried in a real court for perjury. There's also a touch of activism, for cryin' out loud.

I am all for woman-centric films, but churning out rubbish in the name of thrills and hiring an actress with a huge fandom and telling an ordinary story will be received the same way how other recent films are received in Bollywood, irrespective of the genre. Shroff and Azmi did a good job.

BOTTOM LINE: Sanjay Gupta's Jazbaa is maybe made for the modern world where every other person is a thug, but after analysis, it just looks like green beef.

GRADE: D-

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

Jazbaa - A mother's revenge!
g_aparna12 October 2015
A lady (Shabana) falls in love with an artist kind of person – drawn to him because of his flamboyant lifestyle – late night parties, boozing and even womanising! She probably thought of herself to be very beautiful – and thinking thusly – she married him! She thought that her beauty, personality and love will change his ways – at least he would give up womanising ...and boozing so much....and late night parties as well – but nothing of the sort happened! She then hit upon a great plan – an age-old plan of making a male stay trapped in the mesh of mushy love – give birth to his child! So this lady gave birth to a daughter. Things did not change after marriage..nor after child-birth!

Her husband continued to booze, womanise and make merry! As it is women lose their figure and beauty after birth of a child – and an artist is known to be a worshipper of beauty – he thus alienated more from his fat wife! All this led to a divorce! The daughter then grew up in a broken family. Till the time she was a child – she stayed with the mother – just as soon as she became an adult she wanted to lead a flamboyant life herself! Like father, like daughter! The daughter started living alone in a flat given to her by her father .Financial support too was given by father. So the educated & learned Professor mother just visited her daughter sometimes and in return she was rebuked by her daughter ... probably for not letting her start enjoying her life even earlier!

Her enjoyment was – taking drugs, sleeping with boyfriend(s?), attending late night parties and discotheques, wear revealing outfits....trying out expensive drugs like Angel dust! Wow!! So this is what we get when a professor weds an artist (well, in this film for instance) ! And when the professor mother is asked ( by the advocate in the court room)whether her daughter had boyfriends...she replied – Of course she was so beautiful, innocent, pretty – who wouldn't be drawn towards her! One may then ask – Why did she leave her husband then? – Her husband must have been a 'raseela' personality and many women wanted to sleep with him...so why leave him? – she could be so broad minded when it came to her daughter...why couldn't she show the same broad-mindedness towards her husband?! That way the girl would not have gone through the trauma of growing up in a 'broken family' at least!! ....Though she would still have gone ahead to party, booze and manize (opposite of womanize)...for you see – in the discotheque there were several teenagers jumping high and low – does it mean that all were from broken families? Of course not!

Ash's role: Ash looked like a 24 years old girl in the film!! She is 42 – but she looked 24! I recently watched 'Singh is bling' and was marvelling at Akshaya's physique – how well – lean and muscular and fit he has kept himself – and now I am happier to see Ash – back in full form! It is good to see my contemporaries keeping physically fit....gives one some hope...not that I do even a fraction of the work-outs that they follow to keep themselves fit! Anyways – so Ash falls in love with a bloke and agrees to shift to the US just for him – forgetting all about her Law degree. She was happily adjusting herself as a housewife and things were going fine – till she became pregnant.

Her in-laws get a sex-determination test done on her and up on finding that she was carrying a daughter – they ask her to abort the child!!! Yea- you read it right – she had gone to the US – United States – but she was completely unaware of the fact that she had wed someone who belonged to the clan of absolute jahil-ganwaars (uncouth-illiterates)! She somehow manages to escape the blokes and returns to India – joins a firm as criminal lawyer – because fees and wages of a criminal lawyer is much higher...and she had to bring up her daughter single-handedly!

So the fact that she used her knowledge, wit and intelligence to save the criminals is justified...right?

Irfan's life – He is shown as a corrupt yet decorated Police officer – corrupt – because he accepted and asked for bribe and decorated – because he had got medals to solve some criminal cases! He proved in the film that in the world of the corrupt – one has to become corrupt in order to survive. In the country of the blind – the one eyed man is the king.....but not everyone can become the king ...right – so it is better to be blind and live happily ever after .... the king has many additional duties to take care of... and we, the people, shirk duties and responsibilities like plague!

So the police officer spends his mornings in catching and beating up thugs and nights and late nights in getting sloshed in some bar. He has a soft corner for Ash...which will eventually be reciprocated. So basically Ash will head from fire-pan to fire.....a drunkard police officer suspended from work because of corruption is not an 'ideal' husband material – is he?

Story: I cannot reveal the story right now because it is a new film and people are going to the theatres to watch the film. When people go to the theatres, many people make their livelihood.....so I do not want to snatch food from several mouths. Better go and watch the film!

Not A Great Comeback
anupapu89 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
JAZBAA - So its the Big Comeback this Friday from the gorgeous (i think the whole country would agree on that) Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. From the start when i get to here that Aish is doing a comeback in a Sanjay Gupta film , i was little shocked. Sanjay Gupta is not a mainstream director in Bollywood. He make genre movies , mostly crime and thriller. That too mostly with actors like Sanjay Dutt , Sunil Shetty and Anil Kapoor. Yes there was Amitab Bachchan in Kaante and John Abraham in Shoot Out at Wadala which are actually the exceptions in his not so great Filmography.. So why Aish choose this movie , may be because Gupta's last outing was a hit or may be Aish connected with the character of the mother. Whatever the reason is , it was a not so good decision. And this movie will not give any push to Aish's carrier. I really don't have anything much to write. Because there is nothing great in the movie (except the beautiful cinematography) neither there is anything worst in the movie . It was just passable. So i am gonna keep this review short The whole story has been almost shown in the trailer , only suspense left in the movie was that who exactly was the kidnapper. That too has been predicted by my friend sitting with me almost around interval. Nor it was too shocking. Actually i kind of disliked the climax. The courtroom scenes are done totally in a childish manner. I mean can a High Court Judge really give bail to a person whom the lower court has regarded as convict just because his lawyer in High Court proves that there was another person in the house when murder was done. Although she is not denying that his client could be the murderer. That was so silly. I didn't liked the characterisation too. Aish's character hasn't been shown as an honest lawyer. Infect the first scene in the film shows that she will do anything to save his client whether its legal or illegal . And yes she only takes the case of guilty criminal as they only can afford his fees. I imagine why exactly kidnapping has been done of his daughter , she could have taken the case happily as this was what she does - saving criminals. Then there was Irfan Khan. Already given too breakthrough performance this year , this time he choose wrong. His chemistry with Aish was totally bad. They two are not to bring together . And yes those over the top dialogues made Irfan's character uninteresting. I mean yes those dialogues are poetic (not all of them but some of them) , but totally irrelevant for the film. After many time there comes a picture where actually i didn't enjoyed Irfan Khan . And same goes for Sabana Azmi. I am not blaming them , its totally writers fault. Sanjay Gupta's track record is not great , but he use to make watchable movies. This one also goes in the category of ZINDA and DUS KAHANIYA. But they could have gone in the category if KAANTE and SHOOTOUT AT WADALA if written well. This was only style without material. The cinematography is one thing which i have to appreciate. The look of Mumbai was totally unique like never seen before which could only be enjoyed in big screen. But i guess that's not enough to pay the price of the ticket.

O yes , i forget to tell about Aishwarya's acting. Well i think its still the same. She is always good in good director's hand , average in average director's hand and bad in bad director's hand. And here she was average. 5.9/10. By ANuP APu KuMaR

What a waste of a good two hours..
adyavats23 August 2016
Do not waste two hours of your life watching this movie, it's not worth it AT ALL. A very very bad come back for Aishwarya, after 5 years or so of being away from the silver screen you would expect her to come back with a bang and if not then at least a movie that's watchable. Throughout the movie, for some random unknown reason, the sky is made with some pathetic CGI or VFX or however they did it, its a constant orange-y green mucky colour, why just why would you do that??? What is the need for the sky to be made with cheap graphics? why couldn't they just let it be?? The editing in this movie is so cringe worthy, almost every scene abruptly ends and the next one just starts randomly, there's no smooth transition between scenes and that becomes very annoying as the movie progresses. The acting is beyond horrendous, Aishwarya has done a pathetic job, in fact she was annoying, the dialogue delivery was so monotonous and uninteresting, even Irrfan Khan seemed unimpressive which is a shocker because he usually delivers. The story of the movie wasn't too bad, it had the potential to become a better film maybe if the script was written better. The so called "suspense" they tried to build failed miserably, I knew who the culprit was 30 minutes in to the movie which is an absolute bummer. Bottom line, don't waste your time with this movie, I'm sure you have better things to do with your time.

A strictly okay, one time watch thriller that seriously harms itself with all overdone melodrama, songs and many forced philosophical dialogues.
bobbysing2 August 2016
A perfect choice of subject by director Sanjay Gupta (an official remake of a Korean crime thriller titled SEVEN DAYS), JAZBA's script had all the essential elements presenting a young, strong (lawyer) mother fighting for her kidnapped daughter along with a suspended police officer helping as a dear friend.

But sadly the strong merit couldn't help the film falling way short of the expectations raised and even the potential borrowed plot didn't turn out to be that supportive for Aishwarya due to many major visible issues in the execution. Giving you the basic reason for this less impressive result, it's the more than required, hyperactive efforts put in almost every department of the film converting it into a visibly 'over the top' product trying too hard to present its case in front of the common viewer. And the biggest culprit of them all remain the so unrealistically written cheeky dialogues (especially of Irrfan), that are intentionally added just to (vaguely) entertain the audience aiming at some occasional applause in the theater.

Admitting the truth, yes the dialogues work well as the film begins and one enjoys watching Irrfan rendering them stylishly too till the first 30 minutes are over building a fine base. But once the characters start emoting as per the script's main track, every such line spoken with all forced philosophy of life becomes irritating enough, straight away reminding you of many copy-pasted life teaching quotes regularly found at FB, Twitter and Whats App. Exactly the same can be said about Aishwarya's performance too, that also remains fairly impressive in the beginning but soon steps on to the avoidable 'overactive' & 'emotionless' gear once the director asks her to start shouting as loud as she can in many repetitive sequences. Besides, I was really surprised seeing the pre and post interval portions in particular where she was made to do everything so hyperactively right from the widely open red eyes to all forceful screaming and the so well-controlled, stylishly conceived running in slow motion.

Moving ahead the next insertion in the film that fails to make any impact whatsoever is the so overly done colour correction of the frames, particularly the ones (repeatedly) showing Mumbai and its skyline taking it far away from anything seen in the real life. Talking about the music, I have started writing less and less on this specific department of our latest Hindi films, as they are really not interested in giving anything worth writing about since long, with only a rare occasional OST proving to be the important exception. So same is the case with JAZBAA too that does have a couple of above average songs which as usual don't fit into the film tensed narration from any angle. To be exact, apart from the painfully loud and interfering background score, the film opens with a soul-less track played along with its opening titles and then after some 40 minutes throws a good sounding ghazal appearing from nowhere only to be followed by a typical club-item-rap-song, exactly like the one Irrfan himself had made a spoof of just a few weeks before associating with the AIB boys. (A true irony of our system, quite clearly!)

Coming back to another well intentioned merit of JAZBAA, it does try to present itself as an anti-rape and women empowerment supporting film in its final 30 minutes (ending with a text slide too). But unfortunately the over dramatic melodrama and an easily predictable suspense executed without any inspiring vision, doesn't let it become one of those significant movies made with a noble aim or purpose of some kind of social awakening.

In the performance section, where Aishwarya plays her strong character of a mother and lawyer in a confusing-overactive tone, there Irrfan Khan looks like walking on a very thin line of getting typecast in all similar looking roles speaking some nasty lines with a straight face, exactly like we have seen him in the last few films. Honestly I also felt as if I was not watching the same exceptionally talented actor in the scene when he starts throwing some hamming tantrums after being told that Aishwarya's daughter has been kidnapped.

Moreover another specific sequence of the film dealing with the allergic child & her medicine reminded me of an exactly similar scene in a different movie featuring Irrfan Khan only playing the kidnapper worried for the kid-girl (suffering from an asthma attack). The film was DEADLINE - SIRF 24 GHANTE (2006) which was itself an inspired version of an English flick titled TRAPPED (2000). But I really wonder did Irrfan even remember the film and if yes then did he also mention the same to Sanjay Gupta just to provide some added information to his director. Continuing with the performances, JAZBAA majorly struggles in its supporting cast department too with only Shabana Azmi partially succeeding among many other talented actors in the list. And surprisingly the list includes names such as Atul Kulkarni, Jackie Shroff, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Abhimanyu Singh, simply wasted in their given roles not presented with any kind of powerful portrayal in the script.

So other than few entertaining 'Irrfan moments' in its initial reels and then some fairly engaging moments coming in the final 45 minutes dealing with the case investigations and the court proceedings, JAZBAA doesn't turn out to be anything great or exciting enough as a comeback film of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made on a potential subject.

But you can still consider it as a one-time watch crime thriller saved by Irrfan Khan that surely could have been a lot better minus the overactive treatment given by its director Sanjay Gupta.

Awesome Crime Thriller
abhinav-mudaliar19 October 2015
It's far more better than the mindless comedy movies that degrade women and showcase them as items. ..Aishwarya rai is gorgeous and ravishing she just steals the show her acting poweress was just superb lovely acting done by Irfan and Shabana Azmi...The thriller was too good...specially the climax just too good...Songs are a part of movie not a separate sequence in this movie...and a special mention Aishwarya Looked soo beautiful. The pairing of Aishwarya and Irfan is soo unique and fresh. The second half of the movie just picks up the pace and from there it's just soo engrossing and picks up the pace. Every actor in this movie has a gr8 part to showcase. The awesome court scenes are a treat to watch. In simple words just go and watch it u will not be disappointed.

Practical climax is only dessert otherwise be prepared to bear bitter main course
dineshprakash9 October 2015
In beginning few scenes, you come to know that makers have lost their balance. Like main female lead shouts like hell when her daughter gets missing from school relay race as if she was aware that her daughter could get kidnapped, if it was there then they should have established it in earlier scenes. Mother, daughter scenes are very routine, like missing to kiss while seeing her off to school, missing on dinner table. An over smart lawyer believes on kidnapper words, only seeing her daughter video that she is safe right now, video could have been past recorded too. Except climax nothing is new in story. Screenplay fails to offer any thrill. It just passes the information. First scene of court room is very childish but they wanted to use this character in later second half of film so just stuffed it. Dialogues by Mr. Kamlesh Pandey are too good. It is quite surprising that how can he manage to stud romantic gems in such type of dry genre film, like "Neend To Mashooqa Ki Tareh Hoti Hai, Waqt Na Do To Bura Mankar Chali Jati Hai" " Mohabbat Hai Isiliye To Jane Diya, Zid Hoti To Banhon Me Hoti." His work is simply adorable. Screenplay is so lame that ransom caller knows her every whereabouts except when she investigates. Even kidnapper send dummy hand to terrify her, how obsolete and repeated this one!? When they felt that screenplay is not being tight then they stuffed some meaningless characters, like Neyaj wife and few others. Most irritating stuff is showing flashback with every ones point of view statement. Seeing almost same things so many times is mentally tiring. How can a thriller can carry such type of stupid scenes? Interval is so exaggerated like typical high octane action movie. I liked one shot that is the way to take kid medicine by giving instruction to keep it in dog's collar pouch. Performance wise Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is good. Irrfan Khan is fantastic as always. Chandan Roy Sanyal as Neyaj, is very good. Shabana Azami makes her character believable with her fine expressions. Jackie Shraoff is OK. Atul Kulkarni is fine. One track by Amjad - Nadeem " Bandeya Tu Munh Mod Ke Na Ja Re, Ruk Ja Re" is melodious.

Another flop from Fakewarya
gipopey26 May 2021
Self-proclaimed Queen of Bollywood is back with another flop. The movie is a showcase of how well Aishwarya Bachchan can flare her nostrils, yell at the top of her lungs, and over act to the max. Cringe!!!
