  [heads for door] 

  Damon Salvatore : Hey, blondie.

  [she halts] 

  Damon Salvatore : Today isn't the worst day of your life. Today and tomorrow, it's a cake walk. There'll be people around you day in and day out, like they're afraid to leave you alone. The worst day? That's next week. When there's nothing... but quiet.

  [she stares at him unhappily] 

  Damon Salvatore : Just a heads-up.

  Caroline Forbes : Appreciate the tip.

  [on her way again] 

  Damon Salvatore : Sure. Anytime.

• Caroline Forbes : [in church, to her mother's body lying in the casket]  I'm gonna be all right, Mom. Everything will be fine after today.

  Elena Gilbert : I don't believe you.

  [as Caroline turns around to face her:] 

  Elena Gilbert : All day, something has... been bugging me. You wanted to pack this all in so quickly, like you had somewhere you needed to be. Then you were so concerned with getting through today without... a hint of how you'd feel tomorrow. And then I realized.

  [shakes her head] 

  Elena Gilbert : You don't wanna feel tomorrow. That's the plan, right? You're not going to see tomorrow. Because you're gonna turn it all off.

  Caroline Forbes : I thought I could get through the rough patch, and then just pick myself up after like I usually do.

  [shakes her head] 

  Caroline Forbes : But then Damon made me realize... it's just gonna get worse.

  Elena Gilbert : You're listening to Damon?

  Caroline Forbes : I can't do worse, Elena! Okay? I didn't even think there was a worst. It's better this way.

  Elena Gilbert : Better? Care... you're talking about flipping the humanity switch. There's nothing better about that.

  Caroline Forbes : That is your experience. Okay? I have more control over my vampire self than you ever did. My experience... will be different.

  Elena Gilbert : It's not gonna be different, Care. It's gonna be deadly. You saw what happened to me when I did it.

  Caroline Forbes : Yeah, that's my point, Elena. You did it. You couldn't handle the pain when your brother died, so you turned it off. Damon died, and you erased all your memories. Stefan moved to Savannah and became an auto mechanic. Do you think that you guys are the only ones who get to escape grief?

  Elena Gilbert : You just mentioned two of the biggest mistakes that I ever made.

  Caroline Forbes : Were they mistakes? Because when... you came out the other end... the worst part of the pain... was gone.

  [tearfully:] 

  Caroline Forbes : And that's what I need. I just need the pain to be gone.

  Elena Gilbert : And if Stefan had said the right thing earlier, would that have changed your mind?

  [Caroline is at a loss] 

  Elena Gilbert : Yeah, I heard.

  Caroline Forbes : [sniffles]  Well, he didn't, so it doesn't really matter.

  [wipes away tear] 

  Caroline Forbes : My Mom is dead, Elena.

  [breaking down completely, sobs bitterly] 

  Caroline Forbes : It hurts so bad, I can't breathe.

  [shakes her head] 

  Caroline Forbes : I can't... I can't do worse, I can't, okay? I shouldn't have to...

  Elena Gilbert : No one should have to. It's not fair.

  [hugs her crying friend] 

  Elena Gilbert : It's not. I get it, I do. I know that you think that you have it all figured out, but...
