The Last......Woman....standing.

Despite the slightly farcical ending, where we get the Lady Felicia Botham moment, I'd class this as an excellent episode of Father Brown. Series three in particular has had too many frivolous, slightly silly episodes, I get that it's afternoon telly, but an episode like this is more grown up, and all the better for it. Rich content, we get triumph over adversity, with Doctor Chandraty overcoming racial prejudice, we get the intriguing story of the land, and of course the rather startling unveiling of the killer.

Much of the success of this one I would say comes down to the performance of Haydn Gwynne, who is absolutely terrific as Jane Milton, such a brilliant, charismatic actress, she steals the show with a moving, powerful turn. Williams is as entertaining as ever, and physically funny here.

I know the ending is nuts, but the sight of Lady Felicia stepping up to hit a six in high heals and that hat had me in fits of laughter, a hilarious moment.

Quality episode. 9/10

It's just not cricket

Warning: Spoilers
British-Indian actor Abhin Galeya plays Doctor Raj Chandraty in The Last Man, which has shades of Lagaan, a famous Bollywood movie about cricket. Anyway, there is some racial commentary about Dr Chandraty by the scofflaw who we learn is a blackmailer after his murder. I guess that the current prime minister of the UK would have felt the sting of such Indian racial commentary and what it truly means to be British or English if you know what I mean.

Anyway, Lady Felicia is a bit of a dab hand at cricket and hits a six at the end, so that's quite redeeming and girl power with the world cup soccer womens.

The Last Man

Well Father Brown is a better sleuth than he is as a cricketer. Lady Felicia makes a caustic remark directed at Clement Attlee whose death duties had allowed the nouveau riche such as Max Scullion to buy up heritage property. One more defeat by the local cricket team and Scullion could own the cricket ground which stands in the way of development and money for Scullion.

However does Scullion have anything to do with the death of demon fast bowler Vince Lennon? He seemed to be the despicable sort that no one liked even though his mother is the respected academic Jane Milton.

Lennon might had an affair with the young wife of the cricket club secretary, a rather old fashioned bigoted man who dislikes the locum Indian doctor.

Well it is only a matter of time before cricket was involved, a nice watchable episode but just a passable one in terms of the mystery.
