It’s been almost 20 years since Peppa Pig first aired, and this popular UK children’s TV show is now a hit with preschoolers the world over, with the show’s achievements including over 350 episodes, eighteen music singles, and four theme parks across three continents.
While many top kids’ TV shows are so irritating they make parents rethink their life choices, the very best of children’s entertainment recognises that you have to win the grownups over too, and Peppa Pig, like Hey Duggee, is a prime example. Yes, Peppa herself is a total brat, and it’s all very Loud and Colourful, but the show also generously peppers (pun intended) the narrative with jokes for the grownups that mostly fly over the little ones’ heads:
When Peppa Lost Her Sh*t About Whistling

Long-running soap opera “EastEnders” and reality sensation “The Traitors” were the most streamed shows on BBC streamer iPlayer during the holiday period.
During the two-week period from Dec. 20 to Jan. 2, “EastEnders” pulled in 23.7 million streams, while the Studio Lambert-produced “The Traitors” drew 12.4 million to iPlayer. Next up was children’s program “Hey Duggee” with 10.2 million, fantasy drama “His Dark Materials” with 8.2 million and children’s show “Bluey” with 6.2 million.
The numbers for “The Traitors,” in particular, are impressive given the show — which is based on a Dutch format from broadcaster Rtl — wrapped its linear broadcast only on Dec. 22, meaning a substantial audience caught up with the series as a boxset on iPlayer. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, the “Mafia”-style reality show, in which a group of “faithful” contestants have to find the “traitors” in their midst who are quietly killing them off, was one of Britain’s most talked-about programs of the year.

If you think you’re too old for Hey Duggee, you’re wrong. Whereas some kids’ TV shows are very obviously made for young audiences, animator Grant Orchard created Hey Duggee as a ‘family show’ which can be enjoyed by the parents as well, inspired by the likes of The Muppets and The Flintstones. This becomes obvious the more you watch, with proper laugh-out-loud moments for adults like the frog announcing it’s going on a ‘gap yah’ and Roly the hippo being asked to choose his superhero name and plumping with miscalculated enthusiasm for ‘Stephen!’
So it’s unsurprising to spot countless clever grownup references to classic TV and films dotted throughout Hey Duggee’s four series, from the subtle to the downright uncanny. In fact, it becomes rather addictive to look out for them, so we’ve listed a few of the best ones here:

One of the consequences of the BBC’s decision to start up their own streaming service (how dare they) is that a lot of their shows will soon be departing from their competitors.
Britbox, in partnership with ITV, launched in the UK last November, and now the content available elsewhere has started to catch up. Today we’re going to run through the wealth of titles that’ll exit Netflix UK at the end of March. There’s a lot to run down, too. And yes, this is redundant for American readers. You’re more than welcome to stay for tea, though (which is more than just a cultural stereotype).
First up – and probably of most interest – are the BBC comedies leaving on March 30th:
A Bit of Fry and Laurie (4 Seasons) Absolutely Fabulous (6 Seasons) Almost Royal (2 Seasons) Daniel Deronda (1 Season) Extras (2 Seasons) Fawlty Towers (2 Seasons) French and Saunders (6 Seasons...

Meryl Streep will lead a cast lending their voices to an animated short film that will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 17 in celebration of Earth Day. “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth,” based on the 2017 Time magazine Best Book of the Year by Oliver Jeffers, will be narrated by Streep and feature the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Chris O’Dowd, and Ruth Negga.
The short follows a precocious 7-year-old who, over the course of Earth Day, learns from his parents — and from a mysterious exhibit called the Museum of Everything — about the wonders of the planet.
The 36-minute short is from independent animation production company Studio Aka, whose educational preschool series “Hey Duggee” has won three BAFTAs and two Emmys. Its short “A Morning Stroll,” directed by Grant Orchard, was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA in 2012.

Are your kids Bing fans, or more partial to Sarah & Duck? We count down a dozen of CBeebies' finest...
There’s arguably no more important television than children’s television. Sure, you could be one of those parents who doesn’t let their child anywhere near a screen – but chances are, if you’re the kind of person to read Den of Geek, the idea of doing so would utterly horrify you.

Besides, children can learn so much from watching television – not as a substitute for actual parenting or schooling, of course, but as an addition to it. It can be damaging to rely solely on it, to park them in front of it for several hours a day – but in healthy doses,...

The dungeoneers on Citv’s Knightmare met a wide range of fantasy figures, from monks to mages to thieves. Here are 10 of the best…
“Mike, you’re in a room. There’s a cauliflower on the floor.”
Children aren’t very good at improv. That’s why there were never any on Whose Line Is It Anyway.
Basing Citv adventure game Knightmare around the improvised encounters of a temporarily blinded child guided on a parlous quest by three friends with a shaky grasp on the precise qualities that distinguish left from right, then, was a risky approach. You just couldn’t rely on early nineties kids to pull their weight in Knightmare’s improv scenes. It turns out a diet of Willy Wonka’s Dweebs and Vanilla Ice lyrics isn’t conducive to thinking on your feet.
That meant the weight of responsibility fell on the shoulders of Knightmare’s recurring actors.

A live action family movie? Remember them? Here's the trailer for Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg?
Ah, this looks good. A live action family movie, that’s heading into select British cinemas, with the option to demand it comes to yours!
It’s called Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg?, and the movie is the work of Danny Stack. Given that amongst his many credits are episodes of the terrific Hey Duggee, we were quickly sold.
It’s a whodunit that Stack has co-written and directed with Tim Clague, and features Harry Potter’s Bonnie Wright amongst its cast. The synopsis is simple enough…
Four kids on their annual summer camp holiday suspect the park's mascot has been murdered so they set out to investigate who killed Nelson Nutmeg?
And we’ve now got a trailer to show you, too…
You can find out how and where to see the film on its official website,...
