Zee End Is Nigh
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the disappointed bride in the failed engagement between Zee and Sony India, has formally ended its quest for a merger. On Tuesday, it withdrew its application before the industry regulator National Company Law Tribunal and said that it will focus instead on internal growth. Pulling the Nclt application also makes it somewhat easier for Zee to pursue its arbitration and other legal actions against Sony.
The plan to merge the two mid-size film and TV businesses was on the table for over two years, but finally (acrimoniously) collapsed in January 2024. Sony is also seeking restitution from Zee, which it says failed to live up to the agreed merger terms. Since the wedding bells stopped ringing, Zee has also announced that it will slice its workforce by 15%.

Seasoned Danish writer-director Birgitte Stærmose, recently credited for the Netflix show “In From the Cold,” Starz’s “The Spanish Princess” and Göteborg 2023 closing pic “Camino,” debuted her hybrid pic “Afterwar” in the Berlin Film Festival’s Dokument program, after which the film plays at Cph:dox.
Variety has secured in exclusivity the trailer for the helmer’s anti-war pamphlet produced by Magic Hour Films in Denmark (“Burma VJ”) in co-production with Sweden’s Vilda Bomben Film (“Excess Will Save Us”), Finland’s Bufo (“Fallen Leaves”) and Kosovo’s Kabineti.
A meditation on the long-term effects of war, “Afterwar” is the feature-length spinoff of Stærmose’s short film “Out of Love.” The story of a bunch of street kids in Pristina trying to survive in the aftermath of the Kosovo war, snagged multiple awards in 2010, including a Berlinale Generation 14Plus Special Mention.

The New York singer-songwriter is releasing his EP, Out Of Love, featuring the heart-breaking title track, “Millions” and “First Man”, an alt-country track that tells the tale of a first crush from start to finish.
The openly gay singer shares that the song captures a spark of homoerotic desire from the perspective of a man looking back on the macho action stars who marked his adolescence.
“’First Man’ isn’t just about a first crush but more importantly an initial recognition of a person’s queerness. “Children of the Lowest Heaven”
From Denmark, internationally acclaimed writer-director Birgitte Stærmose Mortensen, who has been working on mini-series for HBO, Starz and Netflix for the past five years, presented “Children of the Lowest Heaven” (“Ønskeliv”), a hybrid doc set in Kosovo.
Inspired by her short “Out of Love” (2009), about a group of children living in poverty in post-war Pristina, it picks up where she left off with the characters, who are now young adults, still fighting to survive in one of Europe’s poorest nations.

At the rear of Taylor Hawkins’ Los Angeles property, past the swimming pool, is a guest house he converted into a rock & roll clubhouse and studio straight out of his teenage daydreams. His drum kit is there, along with a formidable collection of guitars and basses. Rock memorabilia (posters, custom drumheads, gig flyers, even a Rolling Stone special issue on Guns N’ Roses) covers every surface, from ceiling to floor. “My wife hates this place,” he said with a laugh.

After writing the DVD Obscura column for years at Movies.com, TheWrap’s Film Reviews Editor Alonso Duralde brings it to its new home. Making a hit song is relatively difficult for any artist — and it’s almost impossible to do it on your first try. Remarkably, R&B rookie Peter Manos has accomplished both on “In My Head.”
Manos’ debut single is slow and wistful. The sparse beat pulsates like a heartbeat, buoying his vocals to the center. Soft, lilting and somber, his voice teases a crescendo that only comes when he sings, “You’re in my head/And I keep on forgettin'” in a high coo. The result is a claustrophobic song...

YouTuber Hazel Hayes has joined force with crowdfunding-based publishing platform Unbound to release her first novel, Out of Love. It's now available for preorder on Unbound's site, with preorder money going toward the book's overall funding goal (which Unbound does not disclose).
Hayes, who last year wrote and directed the award-winning, Fullscreen-produced thriller series PrankMe, says the book started off as a short story, and now has expanded into a novel that will follow the collapse of a relationship in reverse.
“It begins at the end of a relationship, when all hope is lost, and ends right back at the beginning, when anything seems possible,” she says. “Telling the story backwards is a reminder that you can't help falling in or out of love, and those early experiences when you're genuinely happy together are maybe worth the risk of being hurt.”
At press time, Hayes’ novel is 60% funded by 403 backers.

Not all projects should be made or released just because they go through film labs, says Bero Beyer.
The new artistic director of International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), Bero Beyer, has questioned the role of talent schemes across the industry, saying there is a need to curate “gems” among a glut of “mediocre” features.
Speaking on the second day of CineMart, Iffr’s long-established co-production market, Beyer said: “It seems as if the R&D department of the film industry has moved to funds and festivals, in particular to specialised talent development programs that have grown into alternate financing models for feature films.”
Beyer, previously an independent producer on films such as Paradise Now and Atlantic., said having the weight of a major festival behind a project provided an advantage to features from young filmmakers and was not typical of the indie film process.
