Life of Temptation

Ballers has been improving on a week to week basis, which is something that it's HBO counterpart True Detective has failed to do. Not only does it give us some great cameos from NFL players and other celebrities, but it tackles real life issues that players face on a day to day and year to year basis. And for a show that's mostly comedy, that's pretty impressive.

Spencer and Joe had to clean up the boat from their party last week, but instead Joe opted to take the boat for another ride with the presence and possible signing of Victor Cruz on the line. The real issue for Spencer this week came from a concussions test that may or may not lead to long term neurological problems. I was glad to see that the writers didn't take the approach of having Spencer denying any problems and admitted that he had trouble remembering certain things. It was also nice to see they didn't shift the tone and take the situation down a dark and dramatic road.

For Ricky Jerret this week it was yet another bump in the road with his teammate Alonzo. It seemed for a second that they were patching things up, but of course that didn't pan out. Ricky has been my favorite character thus far, but his story lines week to week have been the most frustrating, so I'm just hoping they resolve their issues. For Vernon and Reggie, they are asking for tons of money guaranteed in order to set their family up and start a hospital, but it's way too ambitious. So of course Reggie plays hardball like a jacka** and nothing is signed. Charles Greene is tempted by a party attendant the whole episode. Which to me at first seemed a little too much. But players are tempted on a regular basis and I like that they are keeping the show pretty realistic.

My mini reaction to - Ballers: Episode 4: Still not as gritty or salacious as it needs to be (due to obvious restrictions by the NFL) this episode sees the biggest leap forward in character and plot development. And I'm curious to see how far the new concussion storyline goes, with the heavy criticism the NFL has gotten during the past decade. Overall this was the best episode of "Ballers" so far. That said, it's still undeniable that for a semi-pointless 30 minute show, this Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson vehicle was never going to completely fail.
