The South by Southwest debut of “Stormy” was not your typical Imagine Documentaries premiere.
About adult film star Stormy Daniels’ alleged affair with former President Donald Trump, the film drew an eclectic crowd that included porn stars and “Muppet” director-producer Frank Oz, who sat in the same row as Daniels and her entourage made up mainly of buff bodyguards. Dogs sniffed Austin’s Stateside Theater prior to the screening. After it unspooled, Daniels spoke to the SXSW audience, revealing that she first met “Stormy” exec producer Judd Apatow when he hired her for a small part in his 2005 film “40 Year-Old Virgin.” When she was a no-show due to a death in the family, Apatow sent her flowers and rescheduled her shoot date.
“I thought he would replace me,” Daniels, who would go on to appear in “Knocked Up” for the filmmaker, told the crowd, with director Sarah Gibson standing nearby.

Wind gusts quivered the tree limbs, rainfall ricocheted off the roads, and in an instant, power cut off at the old Opera House on Elm Street in Camden, Maine, scuttling screenings there at the Camden International Film Festival.
With that mid-September atmospheric outburst, Hurricane Lee did in the scheduled U.S. premiere of Alex Gibney’s new film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. Now, the honor of hosting the American debut goes to the Hamptons International Film Festival this Friday, where the documentary screens as the festival Centerpiece (Simon will appear in person there for a conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s David Fear). In his latest documentary “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon,” Alex Gibney explores the singer-songwriter’s six-decade career. The Oscar winning director also captures Simon creating his latest album, “Seven Psalms,” which he made while losing hearing in his left ear. Although Gibney is mostly recognized for his rigorously researched investigative exposes, he is also skilled in creating portraits of cultural icons like Simon. In the 209-minute docu Gibney relies on Simon as well as signifigant figures in his life including wife Edie Brickell, Lorne Michaels and Art Garfunkel, who can be heard via archival footage, to tell his story.
In 2019 Gibney premiered his Mikhail Khodorkovsky documentary “Citizen K” at TIFF. “In Restless Dreams” will debut at TIFF on Sept. 10. Gibney is seeking distribution for the film.
Did you have final cut on this docu?
Yes. That was the arrangement we made going into it. I felt good about that.

Scientology has long been a source of intrigue and controversy in the media.
Though categorised as a cult in Germany, the Church of Scientology is considered a religion by others and has generated headlines about teachings that many deem restrictive.
This, however, hasn’t stopped several Hollywood actors from advocating for the religion.
Recently, Alex Gibney, the filmmaker behind the documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, expressed shock that Tom Cruise, a famed Scientologist, has not been called out for his involvement.
“There hasn’t been any reckoning for him, it surprised me,” Gibney told Rolling Stone.
Whether it’s through Louis Theroux’s exploration into the Church or rumours of John Travolta’s attempted uncoupling from it, Scientology’s position in popular culture cannot be denied.
Here is a rundown of some of the best-known Hollywood stars who have been affiliated with the Church.

Prolific documentarian Alex Gibney hates liars. He hates when companies lie (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room); he hates when religions lie (Going Clear, Mea Maxima Culpa); he hates when authority figures lie (The Inventor, Client 9).
The Rosetta Stone for Gibney’s dogmatic resistance to mendacity is The Armstrong Lie. Gibney’s irritation arises not just from the general lies that Lance Armstrong told the world, but from the lies that Lance Armstrong told him during the making of the movie, yielding a documentary about the nature of deception and self-deception.
Gibney’s new two-part Apple TV+ docuseries Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker is a complementary text to The Armstrong Lie. It’s about a revered sports icon whose falsehoods eventually led to personal disgrace. It’s structured around two extensive interviews conducted at different points in the subject’s prevarication — once in delusion and once when facing a reckoning.

It’s not uncommon for comedies to take a potshot or two at Scientology. After all, most of what people know of the Church stems from gossip pages, highly publicized lawsuits, or documentaries like Going Clear and Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.

At first, director Alex Gibney wholeheartedly embraced the influx of energy — and money — the streamers have increasingly pumped into the documentary space over the past decade. Selling to the growing platforms eager to bulk up their content libraries struck the Oscar-winning director of Taxi to the Dark Side and Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief as a creative windfall — a larger market for the kind of filmmaker-driven films that had previously found some success at the box office and HBO. His company, Jigsaw, could produce unique, entertaining titles in a traditionally underfunded field, told in stylistically distinct ways, and receive “greater monetary reward” to boot.
But then, a red flag: Gibney started to get notes from the streamers “that tried to scientifically rationalize the process,” he says: “‘Our algorithm states that by minute 10 you should do X, Y or Z.'” In the meantime,...

MTV Documentary Films has boarded new projects about an all-girl Afghan robotics team, a #MeToo crime story, an imprisoned mural artist and a community of disabled children in Pakistan. The documentaries join a slate that includes Ondi Timoner’s Sundance title “Last Flight Home,” which will be screening at Telluride this week in a rare double festival act.
The fledgling division, which was Oscar-nominated for the film “Ascension” earlier this year, was set up in 2019 by legendary HBO Documentary Films boss Sheila Nevins, and ViacomCBS executives Liza Burnett Fefferman and Nina L. Diaz. Nevins was at HBO for 38 years and won 34 Emmys in that period. Her credits include “Citizenfour,” “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” and “Paradise Lost.”
The slate spans four feature-length documentaries and six short films (full details below), with Timoner’s “Last Flight Home” serving as a centrepiece.

In producing the documentary, “We Feed People,” Sara Bernstein was very taken by the philosophy that José Andrés brings to food, that just one plate matters. “I think that comfort food really makes all the difference for people who are surviving natural disaster and other conflicts like what’s happening in Ukraine. World Central Kitchen has been there serving 1.8 million meals daily around the region,” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). She adds that the organization has really helped to reframe how we feed people in dire situations. “They need a warm meal. They don’t just need what had traditionally been served to them in relief efforts, which were just dried food.”

Alex Gibney, best known for documentaries such as “Taxi to the Dark Side” and “Going Clear,” is helming a new feature starring Viggo Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”) and Cannes best actor winner Caleb Landry Jones (“Nitram”).
Produced and sold internationally by Altitude, thriller “Two Wolves” will be introduced to buyers at the virtual American Film Market next week. All rights are currently available.
Here’s the official description: The film tells the story of helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson who, during the Vietnam War, turned against his fellow soldiers to halt the massacre of unarmed civilians in the village of My Lai, and rescued survivors of the atrocities. But far from being treated as a hero, Thompson was branded a traitor and threatened with court-martial, while the actual perpetrators of the war crimes were lionized by supporters and pardoned by President Nixon. It doesn’t take much to get Alex Gibney to describe how sickening it was to view how prescription drug companies were neglecting the safety of patients to make more money with the sale of opioids. “The willful denial, in the service of profit really made me ill,” he tells us in our recent webchat about his newest documentary, “The Crime of the Century” (watch the exclusive video above). The pursuit of profit that Purdue Pharma brought to Gibney’s mind the title of one of his previous documentaries about Jack Abramoff, “Casino Jack and the United States of Money.” “I kept hearing that subtitle in the background here. That says all and then when you see the staggering amount of suffering involved and death, I mean, it really makes your head spin.”

The statistics are staggering. Over half-a-million Americans have died of opioid overdoses triggered by controlled-release Oxycontin. So, the big question is how did this happen?
“The Crime of the Century,” HBO’s new two-part, four hour-documentary airing May 10-11 from the Oscar and Emmy-winning Alex Gibney and produced in association with the Washington Post, is a disturbing deep dive into how Big Pharma, political operatives and government regulations helped cause this massive health crisis. The first part looks at the origins of the crisis while part two explores the marketing of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl. Recently, the Washington Post hosted a zoom conversation between Gibney and Post reporters Sari Horwitz and Scott Higham who have investigated the drug crisis for several years.
“The Crime of the Century” was three years in the making. Gibney was drawn to the subject matter after a conversation with the investigative unit at the Post.

HBO is reuniting with Emmy and Oscar winning filmmaker Alex Gibney for the two-part documentary The Crime of the Century, which will explore Big Pharma and government regulations over the reckless distribution and abuse of synthetic opiates. The Crime of the Century will debut on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max in May.
The doc will explore the origins and fallout of the opioid epidemic which has resulted in half a million deaths from overdoses in this century alone.
With the help of whistleblowers, insiders, newly-leaked documents, exclusive interviews and access to behind-the-scenes investigations, and featuring expert input from medical professionals, journalists, former and current government agents, attorneys and pharmaceutical sales representatives, as well as sobering testimony from victims of opioid addiction, Gibney’s exposé will posit that drug companies are in fact largely responsible for manufacturing the very crisis they profit from, to the tune of...

“I was running a fever of rage over how badly the [Covid-19] response was being handled by the federal government,” says the Oscar- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney on The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast as we discuss what inspired his latest documentary, Totally Under Control, which he directed with his Jigsaw Productions colleagues Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger.
The trio began work on the film last spring with the goal of determining if the deadly mistakes of President Donald Trump and his administration had been avoidable, and then sharing their findings with the world before the Nov. 3 presidential election. Says Gibney, “It felt like if that was true, and we’re in an election year, then this is important information for voters to have.”

Oscar winner Alex Gibney‘s new documentary “Totally Under Control,” which he wrote and co-directed with Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger, is already available to rent on demand via streaming services, but will be more widely available through Hulu beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20. The film is another addition to the sea of information about how the United States government mishandled the initial response to the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic. In that regard, it’s not as much an enlightening documentary as a timely one, seemingly aimed at giving voice to scientists and public health experts who appear in the film to narrate all the ways the Trump administration’s response failed the country.

A feature-length version of the kind of montage that usually opens a dystopian thriller about a post-apocalyptic society, “Totally Under Control” is a terrifying and infuriating examination of the rise of the Covid-19 virus and of the many ways in which the U.S. government intentionally failed its citizens. As one of the film’s many experts notes, public health didn’t fail the people; the government’s decision to ignore public health warnings and standards made the current crisis happen.
Directors Alex Gibney (“Going Clear”), Ophelia Harutyunyan, and Suzanne Hillinger (“How to Fix an Election”) have made the kind of historical document that future scholars will consult to get an idea of the impact of the pandemic on the United States and on the rest of the world, but watching it right now is akin to viewing a meta-horror film like “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare,” whereby the audience understands that...

As a documentarian, the ultra-prolific Alex Gibney has many strengths, but “certainty” isn’t one of them.
The more sure Gibney is of his subject matter and his perspective on it, the more his films tend to be thorough but dry, sturdy but unremarkable. To me, Gibney is at his best when he’s telling a story that’s shifting under his feet, when he’s learning new things and being forced into new perspectives as he goes along. His highest profile docs may be Going Clear and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. But I’ll always prefer stuff ...

Canada’s embattled Kew Media Group will continue to cease all trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange (Tsx) following a permanent cease trade order by the Ontario Securities Commission, as the firm’s portfolio of production companies scrambles to exit what one executive has called “a sinking ship.”

Prolific documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney is fascinated by frauds, but Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is out of his league. The disgraced entrepreneur isn’t the biggest crook he’s ever profiled — she bilked investors out of a measly $900 million — but her grift depended on the one thing that Gibney doesn’t often think to include in his kitchen-sink nonfiction: emotion. While “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley” is another of its director’s lucid and ruthlessly straightforward forensic analyses, the film fails to engage with many of the fascinating questions it raises along the way.
Theranos was once touted as a company that had the power to change the world. Founded in 2003, the health startup promised to make phlebotomists extinct and put vital health information into the hands of average people. This boiled down to a small (and very secretive) box-like machine called the “Edison,” named after Holmes’ favorite inventor.

If the documentary world has rock stars, then Alex Gibney certainly qualifies. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker — his 2007 “Taxi To The Dark Side” took home the award for Best Documentary Feature — has made a name for himself producing documentary films with crossover audience appeal. Movies like “Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room” and “Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison Of Belief” have emerged as minor hits with mainstream crowds, giving people a glimpse at secretive organizations who have amassed extraordinary amounts of power.

Emmy Award winner Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) is headed back to episodic television as the lead in Hulu’s factually-based September 11th drama, The Looming Tower – which has been ordered straight to series. The veteran actor will play John O’Neill, who was a prominent figure in the FBI’s Counter-Terrorism division in the years prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and is therefore the centre of the action for this tale of events that occurred before the catastrophic hijackings.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda And The Road To 9/11 by Lawrence Wright, the focus of the series will be the difficult relationships between the FBI and other branches of the Federal Government – in particular, the CIA – and the ways in which this hindered the counter-terrorism efforts ahead of September 11th, 2001. What have fellow writers determined to be the best scripts of 2016? The big winners are Arrival (Adapted), written by Eric Heisserer adapted from Ted Chiang's short story, and Moonlight (Original), written by Barry Jenkins. Ever since leaving Scientology, Leah Remini has been one of the few former members brave enough to speak out about the dangers of the religious system, which has become extremely popular with the Hollywood set over the last few decades. Scientology took a major hit when HBO's Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief documentary (Alex Gibney's two-hour exposé) premiered last year, and now Leah is doubling down on the interest surrounding the pseudo-religion with a new docuseries on A&E. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, the talk-show host told Leah she found the series "bold, brave, and disturbing," which Leah expected. "That's what made me want to do it," she said. "There are repercussions to speaking out, and that's why I said, 'Ok, I can't sit back.'" All sorts of weird stuff starts happening as Theroux reiterates the sheer nastiness of the organisation in his provocative documentary
The Church of Scientology is a deeply strange organisation and, appropriately enough, Louis Theroux has made a strange film about it. It works as a companion piece to another documentary, the one that I think is the definitive takedown: Alex Gibney’s Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, from 2015. It’s an interesting, if flawed piece of work; Theroux’s opaque manner masks an uncertainty as to exactly what he wants to say, and he finally seems to turn on his own chief witness.
Theroux’s Scientology movie is undoubtedly a smart piece of what could be called improv-ocation. He shows up in La, advertising his intention to film a series of scripted and unscripted scenes recreating key moments from the life of the Scientologists’ sinister chief, David Miscavige.
