- XO Mike Slattery: [Chandler walks up to him after they both return to the ship] You don't have to say anything.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: I'm glad you're still with us, Mike.
- XO Mike Slattery: You didn't think about staying with them?
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: It's all I thought about.
- XO Mike Slattery: You mean I could have had my first command?
- [They look at each other and smile]
- Jed Chandler: Gonna be puttering around all day?
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: Just getting the place in order.
- Jed Chandler: Well, I thought you might just be, uh, procrastinating 'cause you don't know how to go back the ship and tell that crew of yours that you're quitting. Do you not realize that they... that they can't do it without you? What kind of message are you gonna send to them, that you're, uh, George Washington and you've come back to work on your farm? You think because you got a... a lab in Baltimore and six planes with the cure that everything's in hand? The world is in chaos. There's a lot more to do.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: And that crew is trained to do it, with or without me.
- Jed Chandler: They need you!
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: [pointing towards the house] And they don't? And what if I don't come back? I'm gonna make my kids orphans?
- Jed Chandler: You think you're the first soldier that had trouble leaving their family behind? Huh? During World War II, English naval captains put their wives and children in bunkers in London and went back out to sea to fight the Nazis for years.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: Wives and children, dad. The wives were there.
- Jed Chandler: I know you, and I know you're beating yourself up, but if you're looking for someone to blame, blame me. I should have never let her go to that town. So cut the shit and quit laying this guilt trip on yourself.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: I told your mother we would not be here without you. That's still true.
- [handing her a set of lieutenant's bars]
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: These were given to me by the captain on the Pickney after my tour in Iraq.
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: Sir, I... I... I... I can't.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: Those words are not spoken around here. I'm promoting you to full lieutenant for your valor, for your loyalty.
- CMC Jeter: Attention to promotion. Lieutenant Foster.
- Lt. Kara Foster: Raise your right hand and repeat after me. "I, Alisha M. Granderson".
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: [raising her hand] I, Alisha M. Granderson.
- Lt. Kara Foster: "Do solemnly swear".
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: Do solemnly swear.
- Lt. Kara Foster: "That I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States".
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: That I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: There's some stuff I didn't tell you. Some things that happened to our crew while we were out at sea. There are people out there who want the cure so badly, they're willing to do anything for it, including kill. As long as Nathan James is leading the mission to spread the cure, our ship will be a target, and it is not a safe place for you. And I can't put my crew in a position where my own judgment might be affected because I'm thinking about how to protect you instead of the mission.
- Sam Chandler: So you're leaving us?
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: No. Absolutely not. I'm resigning my commission. I'm gonna stay here with you. There's plenty I can do for the cause here on the ground, and I'm not gonna leave you again. It's a promise I made to you, and I'm not gonna break it.
- Andrea Garnett: I went by my house. Garage door was open. Bill's car was gone. There were... clothes and suitcases everywhere, so... I figure maybe they left in a hurry. I was hoping they fled somewhere, you know, early on. but then I went to St. Vincent's to... check the records. There were piles of them, just mounds of paper sitting on a gurney.
- [her voice breaking]
- Andrea Garnett: It was so surreal, seeing their names there on that paper. I mean... I don't know what I expected... you know, why... why I'd be special, why I'd be spared.
- [she breaks down into tears]
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: Everyone's looking for their families. I guess I'm lucky; I already found mine. Now she's gone, and all that's left is what she became.
- CMC Jeter: This situation brings out the worst in people, but it also brings out the best.
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: Part of me wanted to just stay in Baltimore, try to help repair that place. But how could I, after what she did there?
- CMC Jeter: Your place is here, with your shipmates.
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: Kara? My own bunkmate won't even look at me. After what my mother did to her...
- CMC Jeter: Well, maybe she just doesn't know how to talk about it, because I can tell you, no one here blames you.
- Lt. Alisha Granderson: I know that you're supposed to say that, but we walked into that mess because the captain put his faith in me.
- CMC Jeter: No one's harder on himself than the captain right now. It's not just on you, you know.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: I imagine you've been wondering how we're gonna handle CIC now.
- Lt. Kara Foster: We'll need a new T.A.O. to replace Commander Barker.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: You up for it?
- Lt. Kara Foster: Absolutely, sir.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: How are you feeling physically?
- Lt. Kara Foster: Fine. No side effects whatsoever.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: Old rules say you can't even be at sea after twenty weeks.
- Lt. Kara Foster: I understand. If you think it'll be a problem, Kirkland can do the job. He's ready.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: You're more qualified. That still wins the day. But I'm gonna expect more from you.
- Lt. Kara Foster: I won't let you down, sir.
- Lt. Carlton Burk: [in the White House] Got the hard drives, sir. And everything we could find in the Situation Room.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: You ever been here before?
- Lt. Carlton Burk: Once, sir. Sixth grade field trip. I don't think we made it this far.
- Kelly Tophet: [Watching their kids fish together] They're already bonded.
- CO CDR Tom Chandler: Everything moves a lot faster in the apocalypse.
