"Evil Dead" fans had to wait a full decade between movies following the release of Fede Álvarez's 2013 entry in the long-running horror franchise. It seems the powers that be have no interest in making anyone wait that long again. To that end, we've learned that Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") has been tapped to write and direct a new movie set within the universe of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic.
According to Deadline, Galluppi developed the idea and brought it to Raimi's team. They sparked to it and now it's officially in the works. No plot details have been revealed but it is described as an original story set within the "Evil Dead" universe. There's also no word yet on casting or anything like that -- meaning, it's unclear if any familiar characters will be included in this new installment. Rami had this to say...

Exclusive: Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop in Yuma County) has been tapped to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures, sources tell Deadline.
The project is described only as an original story that Galluppi developed and brought to Raimi and team. No word on a plot or who all will be producing, as it’s early days here.
In a statement to Deadline, Rami did tell us, “Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”
Evil Dead is, of course, Raimi’s horror franchise going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation...

Prince will be the subject of a new jukebox musical movie distributed by Universal Pictures, with Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coolger set to produce.
The script was written by Bryan Edward Hill, who previously worked on television series Titans and Ash vs. Evil Dead.
The news was first reported by Jeff Sneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Prince, who died in 2016, has a long cinematic history. 40 years ago this July, Warner Bros. distributed his classic film, Purple Rain. In recent years, he’s been a popular potential subject for projects, including an Elizabeth Banks-starring film that was hinted at in 2018 and an upcoming stage adaptation of Purple Rain.
As for additional details about the forthcoming jukebox musical — like casting, release date, and more — we’ll have to wait and see. If they haven’t nailed their leading actor yet, perhaps a scene akin to SNL’s 2021 Prince biopic skit is playing out now.

Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

One of the mandates laid out by actor Patrick Stewart prior to the shooting of "Star Trek: Picard" was that the new Trek series not be a reunion special. He didn't want to return to "Star Trek" after 15 years (his last appearance as Jean-Luc Picard was in "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002) just to participate in an insufferably teary series wherein the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tiresomely get back on the bridge of the Enterprise-d and re-do everything they had done on the celebrated 1987 series. By the time the third season of "Picard" rolled around, the series resoundingly broke that mandate.
In the show's first two seasons, however, the showrunners had to innovate. Picard was no longer a starship captain, and his closest allies were not an official Starfleet crew. Indeed, the main characters on "Picard" were all free agents, with most of them actively resentful of Starfleet.

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) last year, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. It looks like they’re on track to do just that, as earlier this week it was announced that Sébastien Vaniček – who just made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Since Vermin happens to be nominated in two categories at this year’s César Awards, the website Konbini was able to catch up with Vaniček at a nominees’ dinner, and while talking with him they learned that he has...

Here's something of a surprise: a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way! After successfully relaunching the franchise with last year's nasty, gory "Evil Dead Rise," Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert's Ghost House Pictures have tapped up-and-coming filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček to helm what Deadline is describing as an "Evil Dead" spin-off film. I'm guessing they're calling it a "spin-off" rather than a sequel to imply that this new entry in the series will not connect to the recent "Evil Dead Rise." It's also unlikely to be a direct sequel to the original "Evil Dead" trilogy or the 2013 reboot.
In other words, it's time for a brand new story with brand new characters set in the "Evil Dead" world. I like this approach — you don't need connecting stories for an "Evil Dead" film. All you need is the basic set-up and you're free to run wild with it! Besides,...

Exclusive: After signing rising filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček, CAA has helped him win a coveted assignment, as the co-writer and director of a new spin-off of the Evil Dead franchise for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures.
Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps. The Evil Dead is of course the horror comedy franchise created by Raimi, going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation of Starz TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead and a number of other projects over the years. When we talk about classic TV shows from the '70s, it's hard not to mention "The Six Million Dollar Man." Airing for five seasons on ABC, the show focuses on astronaut Steve Austin who is gravely injured in a spaceship crash. He then undergoes a government surgery that replaces his body parts with machine parts, making him part man, part cyborg. With the new powers afforded him by these upgrades, Steve goes to work for the Office of Scientific Information, battling evil forces.

How the heck do you rank the "Evil Dead" movies?
No horror franchise has taken bigger swings, with entries ranging from brutal, unrelenting horror to straight-up goofball slapstick. No horror franchise has proven more consistent in its inconsistency, with each entry showcasing an anarchic streak a mile wide. If an "Evil Dead" movie isn't trying to startle you out of your skin with transgressive intensity, it's trying to make you giggle like a loon. And sometimes, it tries to make you giggle like a loon using that transgressive intensity. Director Sam Raimi made it clear with his original three movies that there are no hard and fast rules in this universe -- and other filmmakers have gleefully stepped in and followed suit. The only thing that truly defines an "Evil Dead" movie is that it needs to be extreme in one way or another.

As Halloween approaches, U.S. audiences consistently demonstrate an increased appetite for horror content. Historically, TV show demand within the horror genre surges each October, and 2023 is anticipated to be no exception. The chart below shows demand peaks for horror TV series during the months of October in the last years.
The fluid nature of the entertainment sector ensures that the horror genre remains ever-evolving. Within this genre, audience preferences shift, as new shows introduce trends and captivate viewers, while interest in others wanes. A case in point is the burgeoning popularity of horror-comedy shows.
In the first quarter of 2021, this sub-genre accounted for 10.8% of the total horror show demand. Fast forward to two and a half years later, and its market share has risen to 17.4%. Contrastingly, suspense horrors, the frontrunners in the genre, have seen their demand slip from 72.6% to 66.4% during this timeframe.

In the wake of the Evil Dead franchise returning to theaters earlier this year with Evil Dead Rise, the horror-comedy TV series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” is coming to Hulu for Halloween.
All three seasons of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” will begin streaming on Hulu on October 1, 2023, we’ve learned, part of Hulu’s massive horror lineup for the Halloween season!
Thirty episodes of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” aired between 2015 and 2018, with the premiere directed by Sam Raimi himself. The series proved to be a massive treat for fans of the franchise, as it returned to the timeline of the original trilogy and brought Bruce Campbell back as Ash Williams. The series also introduced brand new characters to fall in love with.
In the three-season series, “Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), the chainsaw-wielding, wisecracking antihero of The Evil Dead films, is back for more gore-filled adventure.”

Finally giving us a payoff to both the original ending of Army of Darkness and the series finale of “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” Ash is headed into the future in Army of Darkness: Forever.
Announced by Aipt Comics this afternoon, Army of Darkness: Forever is an upcoming comic series from Dynamite Entertainment, and it takes place across three timelines.
“Dynamite is proud to present a new series from Tony Fleecs (Stray Dogs) and Justin Greenwood (Stumptown) that is a direct sequel to how many fans believe the film should’ve ended. This October, Army of Darkness Forever #1 begins to explore what could’ve been.”
Dynamite previews via an official press release today, “The story picks up immediately after the events of the beloved film, jumping between three fun timelines. The Techno Army of Darkness of 2093, the S-Mart aisles of 1993, and the middle ages chaos of Castle Kandar, all three get the spotlight in this series.

A couple years ago, it was announced that Shawn Simmons – creator and executive producer of the Prime Video series Wayne – would be writing an “irreverent high-speed thriller” for 20th Century Studios, with fellow Wayne executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (who are best known for writing Zombieland and the Deadpool movies) on board to produce the film. Now Deadline has confirmed that the project is moving forward under the title Eenie Meanie, with Simmons directing and Samara Weaving taking on the lead role.
Eenie Meanie is expected to be released through the Hulu streaming service. The story centers on a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend. With Weaving signing on to star in the film, it sounds like we know who’s going to be playing that getaway driver.

Evil Dead Rise
To outsiders, horror films can seem as if they’re all the same, but if you have any kind of interest in the filmmaking process, it’s difficult to overlook the importance of the original The Evil Dead, which came out of nowhere in 1981 with a barrage of new filmmaking techniques and an unforgettable central character. Its combination of spectacular gore, playful use of occult lore and vicious yet jubilatory black humour has fed into a franchise which just keeps on delivering, and despite its absence from the big screen for almost a decade (during which time the series Ash Vs. Evil Dead proved a hit on Netflix), fans were eager for more when Evil Dead Rise arrived, enjoying a high profile première at SXSW. Four months on from that, it’s about to be released on DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD, so I got together with director Lee.

Lee Cronin’s brand new installment Evil Dead Rise just slashed its way onto Max over the weekend, but it’s not the only film in the Evil Dead saga that you can stream on Max right now.
In fact, All Five Films in the Evil Dead franchise are now streaming on Max, which makes Max – formerly HBO Max – the Only place you can stream the entire bloody saga!
The franchise of course includes…
The Evil Dead (1981) Evil Dead II (1987) Army of Darkness (1993) Evil Dead (2013) Evil Dead Rise (2023)
It all began with Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, the original horror classic that introduced the world to Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and the Deadites he would go on to spend his entire life battling. After being forced to massacre his friends in the woods, Campbell’s Ash returned for Evil Dead II in 1987, a sequel that brought horror-comedy insanity to the forefront.

“All right, you primitive screwheads! You see this? This is my autograph!” Or is it? Bruce Campbell gave some fans some not-so-groovy news over the weekend after they tried showing off an autograph from Ash himself.
On Saturday, a pair of horror fans that go by Frightful Film Fiends on social media posted a photo of the cast of Ash vs Evil Dead that also purported to hold autographs from Bruce Campbell, Ray Santiago (Pablo Simon Bolivar) and Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly Maxwell). They enthusiastically captioned the photo on Twitter: “We have finally received this wonderful image from one of my favorite shows of all time – Ash vs Evil Dead! Complete with full signatures from the one & only ghostbeaters themselves @GroovyBruce @ImDanaDeLorenzo & @RealRaySantiago ! Thanks guys! You all are pretty groovy!”
Unfortunately, at least one of the signatures was forged, and for Bruce Campbell, the phony autograph was easier to spot...

As tentpoles falter and prestige fare fails to perform, horror continues to prove a safe investment for Hollywood. You won't find me complaining about that last bit, for scary movies have long won my affection. And yet, while celebrating box office success, it's distasteful to meander in mercenary matters. Instead, let's consider a new sensation in Evil Dead Rises, the fifth film in the horror franchise Sam Raimi birthed at the dawn of the 80s. Indeed, while these deadite-infested movies have strayed away from detailing the adventures of Ash Williams – check out the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead for more of that – the original trilogy continues to have a special place in fans' hearts.
So, join me as I revisit Raimi's first ventures into gory horror, horror comedy, and medieval fantasia…...

There’s a kind of shaggy glory to Evil Dead: Sam Raimi’s demonic scary movie series spawned from the writer/director’s triumphant indie horror marvel from 1981. Starring childhood friend Bruce Campbell and shot in the Tennessee wilderness with next to no budget, the inaugural outing with Raimi’s Necronomicon (aka Book of the Dead) and its flesh-ripping Deadites — also known by the original film’s title, “The Evil Dead” — established a formula for four more films with immeasurable influence on skin-peeling, tendon-snapping, chainsaw-revving pop culture as we know it.
The first film sees final guy Ash Williams (Campbell), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), and friends Scott (Richard DeManincor) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) heading out for a stay at a remote cabin. Once there, a cursed book and tape summons a demonic presence that slowly begins to feast on the souls of the unlucky travelers one by one.

This Evil Dead Rise article contains spoilers.
Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the horror series, opened in second place in the domestic box office this past weekend, pulling in an impressive $23.5 million, and $40 million worldwide, which would suggest there’s more boom left in the franchise boomstick.
And though writer/director Lee Cronin says he “was never trying to bait for sequels,” he nonetheless sets up a few story ideas should he return to the world of deadites and Necronomicon created in 1981 by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, who starred as Ashley J. Williams.
In a recent episode of Den of Geek‘s paranormal pop culture show Talking Strange, Cronin — as well as stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan — spoke to host Aaron Sagers about the film’s ending and what happens immediately following that scene.

This post contains spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise"
When 2013's "Evil Dead" debuted, critics and horror fans weren't on the same page of "The Necronomicon." Some revolted against its addiction recovery storyline, offended that Fede Alvarez's film remade the zany Bruce Campbell-starring horror comedy franchise into something grisly and somber. Others thought the film's dark themes and its fresh blood unlocked a thrilling new dimension for the Deadites (and viewers) to explore. Of course, these opposing views revived the debate that has always haunted the franchise: What counts as an Evil Dead movie?
However, most failed to realize Alvarez wasn't rewriting anything within the world of Sam Raimi's demons. Given the era his film came out, when the aughts flooded the horror scene with remake after remake, it's understandable why many assumed "Evil Dead" fell into this bloated category. However, In 2018, Alvarez confirmed his film is a sequel,...

New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” from writer/director Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).
Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

This post contains light spoilers for Evil Dead Rise.
Since the late 1980s, one of the key characteristics of a budding cinephile was the ability to explain the relationship between 1981’s The Evil Dead and 1987’s Evil Dead II. Where the first movie introduced the world to director Sam Raimi‘s dynamic style, as well as star Bruce Campbell‘s unique charisma, its independent production meant that it only rose to the level of a cult hit. To expand the audience, Evil Dead II opens not by picking up where the first left off, with Campbell’s beleaguered Ash Williams potentially possessed, but by remaking the first movie, at least in its opening act.
Whatever explanation fans gave to smooth over the transition between the first two movies, it set a precedent for everything that followed. Evil Dead would be about gore and Three Stooges gags, not strict continuity. 1992’s...

The Deadites are set to return to theaters this weekend with director Lee Cronin's gloriously unhinged "Evil Dead Rise." Visionary director Sam Raimi's twisted version of the undead bowled over unsuspecting audiences when the original "The Evil Dead" hit in 1981, ushering in a new wave of blood-soaked mayhem and low-budget terror. When Raimi first cracked open the pages of The Necronomicon (a.k.a. the Book of the Dead) in that first film, the overall tone and texture of his breakthrough debut was decidedly darker and grittier than the films that followed. When five innocent college kids accidentally unleash Hell itself at a remote cabin in the woods, the dark spirits found in "The Evil Dead" are only concerned with wreaking as much havoc as possible. If you're Ash (Bruce Campbell), the reality of watching your girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker) and your buddies transform into possessed soul eaters...

When Peter Albrechtsen signed on as sound designer for “Evil Dead Rise,” director Lee Cronin’s addition to the now 42-year-old horror franchise, he received a valuable gift from “Evil Dead” royalty. “One of the first things that happened when I got this job was that I got a hard drive with digitized versions of sound effects from the first two films,” Albrechtsen told IndieWire. The drive came from Bruce Campbell, the star and co-producer of the first three “Evil Dead” movies (as well as the television series “Ash vs. Evil Dead”), a sound enthusiast who wanted Albrechtsen to have access to the DIY work he and director Sam Raimi did back in the early 1980s. “It wasn’t just the mixes, it was the actual recordings Bruce and Sam did together,” Albrechtsen said. “Every sound from those movies was suddenly available to us.”

Horror fans have been waiting a full decade for the Deadites to return to the big screen. Well, Warner Bros. and director Lee Cronin have answered the call as "Evil Dead Rise" is officially in theaters. Not only is the film earning extremely positive reviews, kicking off with its electric screening at SXSW last month (read our review here), but the film is off to a good start at the box office as well. So much so that it could — strong emphasis on could — end up topping 2013's "Evil Dead" on its opening weekend, depending on how things shake out between now and Monday morning.
According to Deadline, "Evil Dead Rise" scared up $2.5 million in Thursday preview screenings. Heading into the weekend, industry estimates had the film earning somewhere between $15 and $20 million. While that won't be enough to take down "Super Mario Bros.," it will be enough to call it a successful debut,...

This piece contains spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise."
There is no denying how big of an impact the character of Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) has had on making the "Evil Dead" franchise as big as it is. While some people might come into the franchise looking for disturbing imagery and bloody kills, others are open with their adoration of the bumbling hero, who has been a somewhat consistent presence in every entry in the franchise. He's the closest the franchise has to an icon, like how Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees are the faces of "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Friday the 13th," respectively. It's as if Ash is intrinsically connected to "Evil Dead," and thinking of the franchise without him would be weird.
That is, until "Evil Dead Rise" clawed its way out of development and into theaters. Lee Cronin's new take on the series doesn't feature the groovy antihero.
