Sonny Landham, the brawny journeyman actor best known for tough guy roles in films like “48 Hrs.” and “Predator,” has died. He was 76. The actor died from congestive heart failure Thursday at a Lexington, Kentucky, hospital, his sister Dawn Boehler said, according to the Associated Press. Landham played a small part in Walter Hill’s 1979 street-gang thriller “The Warriors” before Hill cast him as the trigger-happy criminal Billy Bear in 1982’s “48 Hrs.” Also Read: Shane Black's 'The Predator' Pushed to Late Summer 2018 However, Landham who was part Cherokee and Seminole, is perhaps best known for playing the Native American tracker Billy.

Monday-morning quarterbacking is in full effect after Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit” opened wide to $7.6 million after a week in limited release. The biggest single target of blame is distributor Annapurna Films’ choice of an August release date for the first film from the distribution arm of Megan Ellison’s high-flying production company (“American Hustle,” “Her,” “The Master”).
Lacking time travel, it’s impossible to predict what the alternative result would have been. But let’s start with the assumption that the team at Annapurna analyzed all options. A case can be made that, faced with a tough film to market, August contained a logic that a fall release did not.
“Straight Outta Compton”
What Made August Appealing?
Late summer brought both opportunity and precedent. Studio distribution operates under a number of preconceptions, with a heavy reliance on history. Key dates belong to the highest-budget releases that need worldwide success and near-simultaneous release.

Ubi SuntA thematic line running through many of the films in this year’s International Short Film Festival Oberhausen is the inherent materiality of cinema: the objects and bodies immortalized by the act of filmmaking, a desperate yet hubristic gesture which is, as Tarkovsky put it, a “harrowing preparation for death.” The ephemeral is celebrated in film—gestures, moments, glances, events—but to film life is to film death too. And this act of immortalization, the immortalizing of the image through filming (temporarily at least, before the bits and bytes dissipate before the cellulose faces, before the hard drives fail and the DCPs become unreadable) preserves the material world like naturalist specimens in tinted formaldehyde.Bodies are filmed; objects, animals, organs, light and texture. Yet no matter how much of the inner world is stripped away, this cinema of matter only urges the creation of spiritual link to the eternal...

Late summer is all about reflection over at The Criterion Collection, as the library is spending August offering up a handful of unsung classics and new look at some longtime favorites.
Michael Curitz’s “The Breaking Point,” a mostly overlooked Hemingway adaptation, starring John Garfield and Patricia Neal, will be available on Blu-ray for the first time, while Sacha Guitry’s “La poison” arrives on home video for the first time ever. Elsewhere, Mike Leigh’s revelatory “Meantime” is getting a 2K restoration, all the better to enjoy the early work of Tim Roth and Gary Oldman. That’s not all for Oldman fans, however, as Alex Cox’s “Sid & Nancy” hits the collection with a brand new 4K digital restoration. Finally, Walter Matthau stars in the charming comedy “Hopscotch,” also available on Blu-ray in a 2K digital restoration.
Below is the complete list of August additions, with descriptions provided by Criterion.

Celluloid Dreams handles Valley of Shadows; Media Luna boards Little Wing; Indie Sales represents The Giant.
The old adage of ‘leaving them wanting more’ was certainly on display at the Works In Progress pitches at Goteborg’s Nordic Film Market this year (full line-up below).
The most-anticipated pitch of the session was Johannes Nyholm’s feature debut The Giant. The director showed several scenes from the film, but refrained from showing footage of the fantastical Giant as he said the VFX was still being worked on.
Also holding back were the producers of Cold Case Hammarskjold, the latest provocative documentary from Mads Brugger (of The Ambassador and The Red Chapel fame), about the death of Swedish diplomat and author Dag Hammarskjold.
Co-producer Andreas Rocksen said the filmmakers had a new theory about how Hammarskjold’s plane went down in 1961, but he said the theory won’t be revealed until the film is ready.
