Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, was released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th (you can read our review Here) – and today, a judge will be deciding whether or not a parasitism lawsuit that has been filed against the filmmakers will be enough to get the movie removed from Netflix for a while. But in its nine days of release, Under Paris has already proven to be enough of a hit that Gens and producers might start having sequel talks soon.
When asked if there’s a sequel in the pipeline, Gens told Variety, “Right now, as of today, we’re not on it but there’s a chance that we’ll be discussing it soon. If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water.” To read the full interview, where Gens talks about the...

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, is set to be released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th – but producers Sébastien Auscher and Edouard Duprey have been hit with a parasitism lawsuit filed by filmmaker Vincent Dietschy, who claims that Under Paris resembles a project called Silure, which he began working on in 2011. According to Deadline, if a judge rules in favor of Dietschy at the initial hearing on June 14th, Netflix might have to remove Under Paris just days after its release, as Dietschy’s lawyer has requested that the release of the film be suspended while the parasitism lawsuit makes its way through the court system.
Dietschy says he registered Silure with France’s rights management body Sacd in 2012. Going by article 1240 of France’s Civil Code, parasitism is what it’s called when “one party follows in the footsteps of another party...

Few things are as scary as nuns, draped in their signature black garb, dishing out vengeance and striking terror into the hearts of all. We’ve seen this eerie trope in films like The Nun, The Crucifixion, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter, among others. Yet, Sister Death sets itself apart from its contemporaries by delivering a narrative that doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares.
In this movie, it’s not the typical ghosts, spirits, or statues crying blood that are the primary sources of your fear. Instead, it’s the backstory that connects them all, leaving you with goosebumps. Sister Death, Paco Plaza’s latest film, is a feast for the eyes, especially for those who appreciate a horror film that strikes a perfect balance between a gripping narrative and spine-tingling scares. He understands that true horror lies not in the fleeting shocks but in the lingering sense of unease...

Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s new strand in which, each fortnight, we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track. So we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This week we visit French director Xavier Gens’s Thailand-set fight-fest Farang, which has shown independent French action movies can hold their own in cinemas and find international buyers. Released against a real-life background of fury towards the police following the killing of a French teenager during a traffic stop in June, the film has shown there remains an appetite for genre movie in the country.

Infinite, a sci-fi film from director Antoine Fuqua, made a major change with Mark Wahlberg as its new headliner, replacing Chris Evans. Indeed, while Avengers: Endgame was the expected, well, endgame of Evans’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America (maybe?), the actor happens to have several starring roles on his docket. Consequently, with regards to Infinite, Chris Evans—unlike Cap—didn’t want to “do this all day.”
Mark Wahlberg replaced Chris Evans as the headlining star of Infinite, as Variety reported back in June 2019. Evans, who had been attached to the project since that February, dropped out due to scheduling issues. Star-swap notwithstanding, the fast-tracked movie project will adapt author D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 novel, The Reincarnationist Papers. Prolific producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are onboard via the former’s Paramount-based Di Bonaventura Pictures, joined in that capacity by John Zaozirny, along with executive producer Rafi Crohn.

The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Brian Wilson and Mike Love met up and, in a half hour, wrote “The Warmth of the Sun,” triggered by the events of that day. But as Bob Dylan’s new epic “Murder Most Foul” shows, that Beach Boys song was the first, but far from the last, pop song recounting, or ruminating on, Kennedy’s death on November 22nd, 1963.
Across decades, artists, and genres, Kennedy’s murder has brought out an array of reactions, reflections and indignation in the pop world – sometimes...

All across the country at this very moment, people are lost, scared, and grieving. The coronavirus crisis has transformed American life with shocking speed — and Bob Dylan wants you to know that he feels your pain.
How else to explain the midnight release of “Murder Most Foul,” a somber 17-minute ballad that’s eerily fitting for our current moment? It starts as a history song, recounting in poetic detail the “dark day in Dallas, November ’63,” when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. That was a pivotal time in Dylan’s career,...

As an added bonus, “Good Omens” showrunner Neil Gaiman created a mini-movie cold open at the start of Episode 3 (“Hard Times”) to introduce the bromance through the ages between demon Crowley (David Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). For 28 minutes, the Biblical odd couple traipse through Noah’s Ark, The Crucifixion, The Globe Theater, The French Revolution, and more, to fraternize and to rescue one another from dangerous situations.
But for production designer Michael Ralph and costume designer Claire Anderson, it provided opportunities to go wild with the historical settings and period wardrobes. “It was a lot to stitch together and a very interesting journey to try to connect the dots so it all related visually,” said Ralph. “You only had a minute or two to have an impact and what we had to produce had to be strong enough as an emotional moment.”

The year is 1914, the planet is about to crack open under the bloody strain of World War I, and a nameless man played by British actor David Oakes is sailing towards the ends of the earth in order to get away from it all. Xavier Gens’ “Cold Skin” never tells us much about who he was, or what inspired him to run from it — the film eschews even the hazy background information that Albert Sánchez Piñol provided in his 2002 novel of the same name — but it’s clear that this sturdy, unremarkable bloke has no further interest in violence.
In fact, our hero is so eager for serenity that he’s decided to abandon human civilization for an entire year, agreeing to work as a meteorologist on a uninhabited island in a frigid corner of the South Atlantic. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Riverdale” Episode 18, “Chapter Thirty-One: A Night to Remember.”]
Well, the Riverdale High musical went about as well as could be expected, and by that we mean that someone got murdered.
For the special episode airing Wednesday, the students of “Riverdale” staged a production of “Carrie: The Musical,” a Broadway musical adapted from Stephen King’s 1974 novel. Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) directed the play with Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) in the title role and Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) as her religious mother Margaret. Or at least, that was the plan until Kevin continued to receive cut-and-paste death threats from the Black Hood (but didn’t he die?) demanding that Cheryl be replaced as the lead or else a very heavy sandbag would take her out of commission.
Even though Cheryl refuses to bow to thespian terrorism, her mother Penelope (Nathalie Boltt) refuses to let her participate, forcing Kevin to replace Cheryl with...

If you're a movie fan looking for something a little different than the kind of films Hollywood keeps pumping out, here's a crazy looking unique film that you might enjoy. It's a creature feature thriller called Cold Skin and it tells a Lovecraftian type tale of isolation and madness.
The film comes from director Xavier Gens (The Divide, Frontiere(s), The Crucifixion) and it's an adaptation of the Albert Sanchez Piñol’s Spanish novel. The film has been in and out of development since 2009 and at one point 30 Days of Night director David Slade was attached.
The film is set on the edge of the Antarctic Circle a few years after World War I and this is the synopsis:
On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a steamship approaches a desolate island. On board is a young man, poised to take the post of weather observer, to live in solitude...

You were born in Cannes so you grew up with film all around? When did you know for sure you wanted to direct?
I think it’s always been there. As a child, I used to steal my dad’s VHS camera to make mini-movies. They were basically all about my Jurassic Park toys eating my dog or invading the garden. Later, I did more elaborate short films with friends, instead of studying. Then, I remember watching Braveheart and the making of the movie. For the first time, I knew that directing was something I wanted to do for a living.

One of my all-time favorite film festival experiences was seeing Xavier Gens’ Frontier(s) twice at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie was a blast from the past, an action-packed gore-fest that was inspired by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Gens, who also helmed The Divide, is returning to horror with the thriller The Crucifixion, which was penned by The Conjuring writers […]...

Fench director Xavier Gens is currently shooting The Crucifixion, a supernatural thriller written by Chad Hayes whose past credits include The Conjuring, House of Wax and Whiteout among others. The film is being produced by Peter Safran whose credits include some pretty stellar thrillers like Buried and the upcoming Martyrs remake.
The Crucifixion sounds intriguing in its story. Rather than a straight forward story of exorcism, it seems to revolve around a journalist and a priest who is facing murder charges in the wake of an exorcism gone wrong.
We've got the first look at the film including some stunning photography as well as a test shot of a terrifying figure that's being refereed to on set as the "Faceless man".

While lots of young actresses pay their dues in a horror movie or two before breaking out into something more mainstream, Sophie Cookson is doing it the other way round. Having turned heads in Kingsman: The Secret Service, she's now signed up for The Crucifixion, a supernatural thriller from genre staple Xavier Gens. It's another project that comes courtesy of screenwriters Carey and Chad Hayes (see also The Conjuring and its sequel). This one involves an investigation into the death of a nun. Did the priest responsible simply murder a woman with a mental illness, or did he genuinely lose a battle with a demonic entity during an exorcism-gone-wrong?Shades of the real-life story of Anneliese Michel there, previously filmed as both the German Requiem and Scott Derrickson's The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. But with the director of the bonkers Frontier(s) and The Divide at the helm, we...

She’s now in negotiations to star in Xavier Gens’ supernatural thriller The Crucifixion.Developed by The Conjuring’s writers Chad and Carey Hayes and overseen by that film’s producer, Peter Safran, The Crucifixion has its roots in the true story of a priest who was convicted of murdering a nun after he performed an exorcism on her. Cookson will be playing a journalist investigating the case, trying to dig up the truth of whether he murdered an innocent, mentally unstable woman or if she was truly possessed by a demon. All involved will be hoping the new movie is as successful as The Conjuring, itself based on real events,...
