Dmitry Babichenko's "Volshebnyy klad" (Russian for "magic chest") is based on a Buryat-Mongol tale by Soviet playwright Pavel Malyarevsky. The plot concerns a shepherd who comes into possession of a chest that helps him get revenge on those who wronged him. However, a number of the scenes reminded me of other things. For starters, the hats - which all look like the stereotypical Mongol hats - evoke the big furry hat occasionally worn by Stephen Colbert while issuing satirical proclamations on "The Late Show". Also, the scenes in which characters get cloned in the chest reminded me of some scenes in Looney Tunes cartoons: in "Duck Amuck", the scene breaks, meaning that there are two Daffys (with the clone threatening to belt the original); in "Beanstalk Bunny", Bugs and Daffy both claim that the other is Jack to avoid getting captured by the giant (played by Elmer).
Yeah, I know: I have too much time on my hands. Anyway, it's an OK cartoon. Available on Soyuzmultfilm's YouTube channel.
