Kilgrave: scariest villain of the year.
TouchTheGarlicProduction21 November 2015
It's interesting how as it gets darker, it also gets lighter; the episode once again had more humour. At the start of the show, what little humour there was was very dry. Suddenly, the show is becoming funnier while still getting darker. The flashbacks in this episode are a prime example; showing a happier funnier Jessica but also showing how Kilgrave first ensnared her.

Speaking of which, David Tennant had more screen time this episode than ever before, and yet I'm still wanting more. He talks in his more normal voice here, making it even creepier. It just works so well for the character. The fact that he was so charming as the Tenth Doctor only adds to it, because it makes me believe that people would do what he says. We get to see him using his powers quite a bit here. So many shows introduce something like that which could be used in so many cool ways and just never carry out their potential. That's why it's immensely satisfying to see it being used in clever ways.

Over all, a tense episode with a great action scene in the middle and a scary final scene.

Kilgrave was great, and the episode wasn't far behind him
Tarx30922 May 2016
This was the most solid episode so far. We got some great action, intriguing character development and (for the first time) some humour that was actually good. Ultimately this episode can be broken down into three main aspects:

1) Kilgrave. This was by far the best part in my opinion - he got more screen time than ever before, and we finally seem to know more about him. This has to be one of the creepiest, most genuine TV villains of the year.

2) Will (that cop guy that you never thought anything about). What the heck was up with this guy? I don't fell I should call him Will anymore because he seems like a brand new character - nothing like we've seen him before. I get that he's moving on and everything, but he seems to have just snapped his fingers and BAM he's better. And completely different. Oh well.

3) The flashbacks. This was what made this episode very intriguing from the start - and it was great how they managed to incorporate Trish, a weirdly humorous and fun Jessica, and, of course, Kilgrave. All very entertaining.

I'll show you how to be a hero.

Warning: Spoilers
We get a great look at what life for Jessica was like before KIlgrave got a hold of her. There's also a plan hatched by Jess, Trish and Simpson to get Kilgrave and help Malcolm. Trish and Simpson also get a little, uh, closer. SImpson also gets a little more to do as well, which I like as it brings up another problem.

Trish's life before Kilgrave was examined this episode. Being a private investigator wasn't always her life as she sort of just had an aimless career. I did like though that her personality is different as she was able to blackmail her way out of her job with a big severance pay. Her strength tester match-up with a creep at the bar was pretty funny. I also liked how they showed her saving a small child as she knew what was right and she didn't care who saw or even how she was dressed. But the best had to definitely be when she meets Kilgrave. That happens because she saved Malcolm from being killed. This must also be the time Kilgrave decided to use him. It was also awesome to see Jessica using her powers to throw a guy over a car and another through a shed. We haven't gotten a lot of scenes with her showing off her powers but that was great.

Simpson gets a little more to do, and by that I mean, doing Trish. As Jessica noted, it did seem to move a little fast but I do like them together as it can keep them both around. Simpson, however, during their kidnap mission, seemed to go rogue and act brash. It was good that Jess told him he was a cop because he seems to be resorting to his old spec ops ways.

The mission went as good as possible. I'm glad that it didn't go as planned because A) they never do and B) that is what makes it more interesting. The fact that they didn't get Kilgrave is great as well as it is too early in the show to have that and they have to make a more in depth plan to get up close and personal to kidnap him.

It was also really tense seeing Kilgrave control Jessica by using Malcolm's life as leverage. However, the fact that he chose not to use the drugs is so powerful as we see that he wants to get better. Still, though Jessica is still sending selfies to him so it will be fun to see how that plays out.

I also love the kid running around as Captain America. There haven't been many nods to the movies like Daredevil, or especially Agents of Shield, but that was great.

+ Jessica's backstory + Kilgrave kidnap + Malcolm's choice + Kilgrave's ultimatum +/- Trish and Simpson

Final Score: 9.2/10

Serious Background
Hitchcoc28 July 2019
We are brought up to speed on Jessica here and her initial meeting with Kilgrave. She hatches a plot to get him, enlisting the cop that was a Kilgrave victim. It shows the darkness of her soul. We also get some more intense knowledge of Kilgrave and how he ticks. Lots of action and some new plot twists.

Not bad

It finally got a little exciting, But it's really awful to finally get exciting after five episodes. The actress playing Jessica is very awful and so is Jessica herself.

Simplistic Plot
joonyjoon8 May 2020
Good stories need a good villain(s). The motivations and machinations of this villain seem to come from a place of everyday feminine fears, creating a fairly simplistic and small-minded villain who just wants to stalk the protagonist and admire from afar. From the first few episodes I've seen so far, the show seems to be an above average melodrama with little depth. Slightly better than Iron Fist, but far worse than Daredevil.

Total Trash & No Longer Watching The Show
gregklein31 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So...Jessica and her friends are being attacked...quite possibly to be tortured and killed.

She got super strength...like beyond a physically fit trained soldier or security expert.

But she can't hit and knock out the bad guys? What sort of awful completely stupid and meaningless writing is this? I've never seen such trash before. The only reason to write it like this was to make sure the bad guy gets away...but it makes no sense based on what they showed the Jessica is capable of.

No longer watching this show as I don't watch trashy writing...for any reason. Too many other good shows to watch.

Very disappointed in this.

Wrong choice for the role
Leofwine_draca5 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
An episode that descends into flashback as it explores David Tennant's villain character and how Jessica came to be involved with him. I'm afraid that the more we see of Tennant the more I feel he's miscast in this imposing role as he can't be imposing fo the life of him.

Very Shocked by Surjik
Tree_Truth_victory9 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The actor who plays Nuke (Will Simpson) is annoyingly trying to be some wanna-be Steve Rogers, though falls so short in smarts and following the lead of the individual with the most experience and physical ability (Jones). He really rubs the plot the wrong way.

To make matters worse, they finally get Kilgrave, perfectly unconscious and in a getaway van.

Yet, they don't notice they're being tailed by the people that were most likely to tail them just when they snagged Kilgrave.

Finally.... Probably the worst action scene I have ever witnessed by Marvel. TO THE POINT where I cannot accept the fact that the studio allowed this scene to be in the Final Cut of the episode.

I enjoy the story and most of the actors/characters, particularly Kristen Ritter. However, this episode was a whole new low. Especially when Stephen Surjik went on to make some of the best action scenes in the Daredevil and Punisher series.
