In the previous episode Hailey spend the night with Alex and missed her audition. When she gets to the theater, everyone is gone, so she sits down and plays her oboe. Roderigo is in the wings and hears her. He knows that she is technically really accomplished but lacks the fire for the present. In this episode he decides to do Mahler's 8th Symphony which requires a fifth oboe (one more than is normally in the orchestra. Hailey is hired for this one piece and her nerves sabotage her and she has to leave the rehearsal when the Maestro decides this piece is too ambitious. She is nearly broke so this is a bad scene. She knows how disappointing this is, but she doesn't act like a child. She knows she wasn't ready for the pressure.
I tried to check out this show after it was recommended to me but I just couldn't get past that Lizzie character. Way too obnoxious for me to suffer through in a world with hundreds of other hit and miss "comedy/drama" shows featuring "hip" young folks.
