Among the series of dramatic, to the point of heartbreak, documentaries I have watched recently, the mockumentary that is “Top Knot Detective” is a breath of fresh air, both for its main theme (a fictional 90’s Japanese TV show Ronin Suiri Tentai (Deductive Reasoning Ronin) and its creator, Takashi Takamoto, and its incredible presentation.
“Top Knot Detective” is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam, that will be on January 24 until February 4.
For starters, let me say that Dominic Pearce and Aaron McCann have created a mockumentary so thorough and filled with information, that even knowing the whole concept is fictional, I still have troubled believing it. Starting with the reaction of the Australian audience to the screening of the film, continuing to the events that led to its creation and the company behind it, to the story of deviser, director, writer, producer and protagonist Takashi Takamoto and the interviews with the other protagonists,...

Just to be up front, I am generally a fan of media based mockumentaries, and Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce's Top Knot Detective is one of the best and funniest examples of the form in a while. The film explores the cult following of the eponymous Japanese samurai TV series from the '70s in the filmmakers native Australia and dives deep into the show's creators, their personal lives, and the cultural force that was Top Knot Detective, a TV program that never existed. The basic premise behind the show within the film mirrors any number of sleazy '70s jidai geki samurai/ronin films and TV shows. A samurai's master meets a violent end and the wronged pupil traverses the countryside looking for revenge and picking up...

Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

As they gear up for this year's lucky 13th edition, the Mayhem Film Festival in Nottingham, UK, have just announced the first three titles on their lineup. First there is a little home grown effort from Benjamin Barfoot called Double Date. This looks to be Barfoot's feature film debut. The festival has also added the mockumentary Top Knot Detective from Oz. And this is very cool. For their 13th edition the festival will have a retro screening of Friday the 13th Part 3: 3D on Friday the 13th! Surely the darkest of stars have aligned for the festival this year. Just going by these three titles alone it looks like they are going to have to call in extra sheriffs that weekend. Huh?...

It was back in 2015 that we first wrote about the Top Knot Detective. Also known by the more literal title of Deductive Reasoning Ronin, Top Knot Detective was a cult Japanese television series explored in a documentary TV series by Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce on Australian television. Or was it? This ‘documentary’ unravels the tale of how ‘Ronin Suiri Tantai’ made it to Australian screens back in the late 90’s, retitled as Top Knot Detective, and what really happened behind the scenes of this outrageous show. The original Japanese series was legendary in its home country as being a cultural train-wreck, led by its insane writer/director/star, Takashi Takamoto. The rivalry between Takashi and costar, Haruto Koike, is just the tip of this conspiratorial...

Artist Ian Strange first became captivated by the idea of home once he left his own, moving to New York from Perth over eight years ago..
Home has formed the running theme in the multidisciplinarian artist's work since. He built a full-scale replica of his childhood home from memory on Sydney.s Cockatoo Island in 2011, and has gone on to create installation works using homes in post-gfc America and post-earthquake Christchurch, New Zealand.
The artist's conception of home as an idea has changed throughout the process, he told If.
.I began to realise that as an adolescent, feeling isolated by the stability of suburbia was actually quite a luxury. There are a lot people who are feeling isolated because of its instability and how tenous it can actually be."
The last eight years of Strange.s work have been documented in a six part web series now availabe on ABC iview,...
