- Business is slow at the Luncheonette and Crosby feels the financial pressure. He fears that he'll disappoint Jabbar until Jasmine comes to the rescue. Hank and Sarah plan an ill-fated game night that fails to win over Ruby, but Amber steps up to help. Drew must declare a major and he confronts the practical realities of choosing a career.
- PREVIOUSLY
Hank tells Sandy that Sarah is a big part of his life and will be a big part of Rubys. Sandy relents. Crosby tells Zeek that Oliver Rome has parted ways with the Luncheonette so now they have no income. Crosby is also upset about Jasmine worrying about his motorcycle riding. Max is skeptical about the advice Adam gives him about wooing Dylan. Amber is certain her life is over now that she is pregnant, but Drew assures her that its not.
THREE MONTHS LATER
Amber, obviously showing, is shopping with Drew at a baby store. The salesclerk notices their apprehension and leads them around the store, showing them what they will need including a stroller that folds and unfolds itself. After she leaves, they look at the price tag and resolve to go to Target.
In his room with Dylan, Max reads from WikiHow and complements her while she looks through his stuff. She teases him about being nutty with his stuff. She reads from his tablet and complements him back. Adam and Kristina sneak peeks as they drift back and forth in the hallway outside Maxs room. Max slams his door shut.
Ruby comes into the shop declaring that she hates Sandy and that she wants to stay with Hank. Hank reluctantly says yes, and Ruby immediately changes her mood, telling Hank she wont be in his hair because she has a get together with her friends tomorrow night. With Sarah standing behind Ruby and pantomiming drinking and smoking, Hank tells Ruby that hell have to talk to Sandy first. Ruby turns around, catches Sarah mid-pantomime and glares at her.
At the Luncheonette, Adam and Crosby are both on their phones trying to find clients. Amber wanders in and tries to butter up her uncles. Finally she asks about her salary using the phrase commensurate with my abilities. Adam says they will take it into consideration. As Amber leaves, she sees Crosby cringe in frustration.
CREDITS
At the shop, Hank wonders to Sarah how long Ruby can stay locked in her room. He is baffled and asks Sarah for advice. Sarah shes Ruby is doing it to frustrate Hank and make a point, and assures him no one can understand what a teenage girl can and will do. He just wants to spend quality time with Ruby. Sarah says Ruby just wants to have a good time, so why dont they have a party of their own like a game night. Hank scoffs, saying thats a Braverman thing.
In their kitchen, Jabbar wants to go to Harry Potter World for his birthday. Crosby and Jasmine frown at each other. When Crosby says theyll go next year, Jabbar is upset because thats what he said last year. Jasmine, to Crosbys chagrin, says theyll look into it, and Jabbar happily skips out of the room.
In his dorm room, Natalie laughs at Drew as he scans his laptop for options for his major. She tells him that no one winds up employed in a job requiring their major. He considers Econ.
Dylan plays with Nora in the living room. Max blurts out that since theyve had two dates, he wants to know if Dylan wants to stay over. Kristina says looking for relationship advice on-line is not the way to go. Max assures Kristina that Dylan doesnt like him enough to have intercourse. Kristina says that isnt appropriate. Max says that Micah has slept over, why cant Dylan? Dylan texts her parents and, much to Kristinas surprise, they say its okay. Kristina surrenders and goes to make up Hatties room.
At the Luncheonette, Crosby tells Adam they have to give Amber a raise. Adam says they may have to defer their OWN salaries because theyve only had three clients in the past three months. Crosby says Amber is having a baby AND she is their niece. Just as Amber walks in with some snacks, Adam says thats why he didnt fire her three months ago. Amber walks out.
At game night, Sarah and Adam try to be chirpy while Ruby stares at her cell phone, texting. She thinks its all lame. Amber visits.
At night, Kristina watches To Kill a Mockingbird on TV. Dylan, in Hatties pajamas, joins her. Max is upstairs perseverating, cleaning his camera lenses. She confides to Kristina that her parents are clingy and are constantly trying to spend quality time with her. She asks if she can stay to watch the movie and Kristina shares her throw blanket with her. Dylan sits close and puts her head on Kristinas shoulder.
As Sarah and Amber fire off clue after clue in Celebrities, Hank and Ruby roll their eyes at each other. Ruby is up next and Hank plays horribly. When Ruby doesnt know who a celebrity is, Amber tells her to sound-out the name. Ruby tells Hank it sounds like something shes allergic to (peanuts) which Hank cant guess. As everyone yells at each other, Amber pats her abdomen as if in pain. Frustrated, and declaring game night sucks, Ruby storms off to her room. It turns out Hank wrote the peanuts clue.
Adam checks on Max who is still in his room cleaning lenses. He asks Max to go say good night to Dylan. Max asks Adam if Dylan is liking him more, as she said he has nice eyes. Adam says hes headed in that direction.
In bed, Adam tells Kristina that Dylan is starting to like Max. Kristina wonders if she actually likes THEM, meaning Nora and her. Kristina thinks Dylan misses her parents so is spending time with them instead.
It is late. Amber is crashed on Hank and Sarahs couch. Ruby is sneaking home after sneaking out (to study at a friends place), spills her purse, and wakes Amber. Obviously drunk, she starts to retch. Amber helps her to the bathroom.
Crosby is sitting outside with a beer. Jasmine comes by and has been surfing Expedia and thinks they can do the trip for around $2000. Crosby says they cant even come close to affording that but Jasmine does not understand why. Crosby confesses that they might lose the business. Hes been lying to her about going to the Luncheonette to mix an album; instead, hes been hiding there and playing Candy Crush. She just doesnt want him lying to her. He is worried that without an income they will have to sell their house. Jasmine says she loves the house but is not worried about losing the house; she is only worried about Crosby and their family.
Crosby and Jasmine tell Jabbar they cant afford the trip. Jabbar offers to do work and pay for his own ticket.
Amber wakes Ruby in the morning. She assures Ruby she didnt tell Hank. She tells Ruby from experience that nothing good ever comes from a night like the one she just had. Amber tells Ruby that her own dad wasnt there for her, and that Hank is trying his best and that she is lucky to have him. Ruby understands and is envious of Ambers relationship with Sarah. Amber says its took a lot of work to get to where they are.
Drew consults with Adam about his major. Adam says he was practical when he chose his major and recommends Drew explore his options and follow his dreams instead of worrying about money -- that is the key to happiness. Crosby overhears this and instead recommends Drew learn as much as he can about making money because money leads to peace of mind AND happiness.
At school, Kristina tells Dylan she tried to reach out to her parents but was unable to connect with them. Dylan says they are out of town and busy with their company. Kristina reminds Dylan that Max has feelings for her and that when Dylan comes over, that she is not there just to spend time with THEM, but to get to know Max better. Dylan says she likes Max but sometimes he can be boring, which is why she also likes talking to Kristina. Dylan says she is fine spending time alone, but Kristina, feeling she was misunderstood, tells Dylan to come over. As Dylan leaves, Kristina looks like she fell into a trap.
At work, Adam and Crosby come in to apologize to Amber about what she overheard. They say they didnt want her to worry about the company, and that its THEIR job to worry. She says the point was that its HER job, too, and that she asked for the raise not because shes pregnant or their niece but she has been working hard and deserves a raise. Adam agrees. Amber is disappointed they were not straightforward with her about the company and she is worried that if the company falls through, that she now has few options since she is pregnant. Crosby assures her that the company will be okay because Adam has backup plans. Adam nods in agreement, not very convincingly.
Adam comes home as Kristina is going over the books. They are overdrawn and late on two bills and the car is having problems. Adam rages about how everyone is on his back and that he could drop everything and get a real job. Kristina says thats not how he is that he wont quit on something, or let people who need him down.
Sarah is trying to get Hank to watch The Breakfast Club but Hank doesnt have the attention for it. Ruby comes in and apologizes for being a jerk at game night, and that she appreciates the effort Hank put in. She thanks Sarah for introducing her to a family tradition. She tells Hank she loves him and says shes going to a friends place to study, for real this time. As she leaves, Hank tells Ruby he loves her, too. Hank asks Sarah how that happened, and Sarah interrupts him, saying he should not question it and just enjoy that it happened.
Drew is declaring an Economics major on-line. Natalie questions if he really wants to do this. Drew says he has to graduate in three years, his sister is pregnant, and hes the only one in his family who will have a degree. She thinks he is paranoid and should live his own life. Drew counters that Sarah wont be able to help him pay his student loans, and that unlike Natalie, his parents wont be able to help if he doesnt get a job after graduating.
Amber is cleaning up at work when Adam comes by. He confesses that he has to be honest with her and that he doesnt have a back-up plan. He DOES know that he will try his best and wont quit. They are family and they will take care of her.
Dylan is playing again with Nora. She asks what smells so good and Kristina says its lasagna. Kristina says she can stay for dinner if her parents are still out of town. Dylan says they are, and asks Max if he is sick of her yet (to which Kristina smiles). Max says no.
Crosby and Jabbar return home from shopping. Jasmine sends Jabbar out back to retrieve his shoes, and he is surprised to see she has invited his friends over in Harry Potter costumes, and set up the back yard in a Harry Potter theme, complete with Sorting Hat (which Crosby controls -- Jabbar is assigned to Griffindor). Jasmine, all smiles, remarks to Crosby that this is like the real thing. Crosby, less enthusiastic, says, almost.
