A picture of Franz Kafka is hung on a wall in Gordon Cole's office. David Lynch has frequently referred to Kafka as one of his favorite authors and has said that his dream project would be a film adaptation of Kafka's story The Metamorphosis.
The episode is dedicated to the memory of Don S. Davis and Miguel Ferrer; both of them are featured in the episode. Davis, who played the role of Major Garland Briggs in the series' first two seasons, died from a heart attack in 2008. His head appears in the space scene saying the words "blue rose" to Agent Cooper. Ferrer reprised his role of Agent Albert Rosenfield but died from throat cancer when the series was in the post-production stage.
Premiered on Showtime's online streaming service on 23 May 2017, along with the rest of the first four episodes. However only Part 1 and Part 2 aired on live television that night, and this episode first aired on television, one week later along with Part 4, on 30 May.
