Most cheerful movies don’t open with their protagonist in a coma, narrating the events from their hospital bed. But in a fortunate reversal, director Matt Smukler’s “Wildflower” mostly grows from there, into a sweet yet straightforward coming of age drama.
“Wildflower” stars Kiernan Shipka (“Swimming With Sharks”) as Bambi, who prefers to be called “Bea” because her parents named her after a cartoon character. Those parents, Sharon (Samantha Hyde) and Derek, are both intellectually disabled, but living independently in their own house, keeping their family afloat through positive attitudes, good-natured religion and working class stick-to-itiveness.
As we learn from Bea’s flashbacks — in scenes she couldn’t possibly have witnessed or heard about from her parents — Sharon and Derek’s romance was easy for them, but difficult for their own families. Jean Smart and Brad Garrett play Sharon’s mother and father, and Jacki Weaver plays Derek’s mother,...

Coley Laffoon is paying tribute to Anne Heche after her death. The ex-husband of the late actress took to Instagram on Friday to remember Heche and promise to look after the son they share.
Laffoon and Heche, who were married from 2001 to 2009, are parents to a 20-year-old son, Homer. Heche, who died on Friday following a fiery car crash the week before, also has a 13-year-old son, Atlas, from her previous relationship with James Tupper.
“In the wake of Anne’s passing, I just wanted to say a few things. One, I loved her and I miss her and I’m always going to. Two, Homer is Ok,” Laffoon said in his video. “He’s grieving, of course, and it’s rough. It’s really rough, as probably anybody can imagine, but he’s surrounded by family, and he’s strong, and he’s going to be Ok.”

Matt Stone and Trey Parker wanted to go even deeper with deepfakes. In fact, the “South Park” co-creators even had an entire deepfake movie, aptly titled “Deep Fake: The Movie,” in the works during the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown.
The duo revealed to the Los Angeles Times that their viral 2020 short video “Sassy Justice” was just the tip of the potential for deepfake films.
“Not a lot of people know that we were a day away from starting production on the first feature movie we had done since ‘Team America: World Police,'” Parker said of pre-pandemic productions. “We were going to start shooting on the day that the pandemic shut everything down. It was months and months of getting ready for that movie, to just being like, ‘Nope, it’s over.'”
Stone shared, “We were working on a ‘deep fake’ movie [with actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz, from ‘Sassy Justice’]. We have a...

“South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker went viral during the pandemic thanks to their surprise deepfake video, “Sassy Justice,” which has earned over 2 million views on YouTube since its October 2020 debut. The 14-minute short finds a deepfake Donald Trump, voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, reporting news out of Cheyenne, Wyoming under the eponymous moniker. The project was the first bit of content to come out of Deep Voodoo, Stone and Parker’s deepfake production studio.
Stone and Parker said at the time that “Sassy Justice” came about because “we just wanted to make fun of [deepfakes] because it makes it less scary,” but it turns out the project had its roots in a full-length Donald Trump deepfake movie that Parker and Stone were working on and then scrapped because of the pandemic. The duo revealed the project’s existence in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Star Trek: Picard
San Diego Comic Con International 2022 attendees roared with excitement when panel moderator and director Lea Thompson introduced the cast of Emmy nominated Star Trek Picard. The panel included Sir Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), and Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman and Rod Rodenberry (son of St creator Gene Rodenberry).
The third and final season reunites the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation crew with their incomparable leader Picard. For fans, this is a long awaited reunion. Although some Stng cast members made brief appearances in seasons 1 and 2; this is the first time Riker, Troi, Worf, La Forge, and Crusher have significant roles in the story line. It’s been 20-25 years, we are all younger and smarter, Gates McFadden stated.
As fans, we easily morph the character with the actor. It was heartfelt to hear that for Sir Patrick Stewart, the...

Exclusive: Zack Stentz’s (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) newly launched Electric Brain Entertainment has secured rights to Korean IP Deep for TV adaptation.
The idea is for the popular Korean webtoon series to get both Korean- and English-language drama versions with overlapping plot lines and cast. Thor, X-Men: First Class and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous writer Stentz and producer Geoffrey Clark (The 2nd) will spearhead the spinoffs through Electric Brain.
The sci-fi thriller series follows the families of humans who went missing and suddenly begin to reappear from the ocean as living corpses, unaged and unchanged in the years and even decades since their disappearances.
Ko Dae-Jung, who planned and developed the well-received Korean original, partnered with Hugh Cha, director of the Asia Division at Bohemia Group and CEO of Stage Bridge, to propose global versions of the drama to Stentz. Stentz and Geoffrey J. Clark will serve as producers.

A sizzling neo-noir that should have boosted Dennis Hopper into feature bankability goes a tad slack — my guess is that Hopper’s fine directing instincts got blurred in the editing process. Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Connelly and others are well cast in Charles Williams’ hardboiled sex ‘n’ crime yarn, and the temperature indeed rises when Johnson gets near his co-stars. The narrative momentum breaks down somewhat, yet the great-looking show remains a favorite, atmospheric and oversexed.

Illustration by Jeff CashvanMovie-lovers!We are thrilled to debut a collaboration between Mubi’s Notebook and The Deuce Film Series, our monthly event at Nitehawk Williamsburg that excavates the facts and fantasies of cinema's most infamous block in the world: 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. For each screening, my co-hosts and I pick a flick that we think embodies the era of all-night moviegoing down the “Glittering Gulch,” and present the theater at which it premiered. We think our little variety act is delicious fun... call us bawdy bon vivants.Back in 2015, we had the wonderful chance to thread and project the only known 35mm print in existence of Robert Butler’s Night of the Juggler (1980)—a memorable evening and a memorable film. Hence, we decided that this is the perfect title to get the ball rolling… Also at our monthly shindig: our 'famous' raffle, the grand prize...

As they say, it ain't over until...the cardboard cut-out is in the trash? That's at least the applicable version for Ben Affleck, who is newly single again after his and Ana de Armas' split was confirmed on Jan. 18. The two stars, who are set to appear opposite each other in August's Deep Water, had been dating since at least March 2020. "Both of them have completely full lives in a good way," a source told E! News. "There will always be that love." While things sound amicable between the now-exes, the trash at Affleck's home painted a slightly more awkward picture. In photos published by The Daily Mail, a landscaper discarded a cut-out of the actress in a...

Remember that time when Admiral James T. Kirk pretended to be a socialist so he didn’t have to pay the bill on a pizza date? In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) rolls her eyes as Kirk is taken-aback about having to pay for the pizza and one round of Michelob beers. Gillian says, “Don’t tell me that they don’t have money in the 23rd Century.” Kirk replies faux-innocently, “Well, we don’t!”
Even by that point, Trekkies knew that Kirk was playing dumb. This is the same Kirk who successfully staged a hostile takeover of a gangster planet in “A Piece of the Action,” and was more than a little bit familiar with the belly-dancer cafe scene on the planet Argelius II in “Wolf in the Fold.

When word seeped out this week that Netflix was considering adding Malcolm & Marie to its list of Oscar-contending movies for this year, shudders went through the competition from other distributors. Can one studio/distributor/streamer — whatever — possibly grab all five Best Actress Oscar slots? That would certainly be a first in Academy history in that category, or just about any other. It is a question worth asking right now.
Recent Emmy winner Zendaya (HBO’s Euphoria) co-stars with John David Washington in the two-hander, Malcolm & Marie, which is now set for a February 5 release on Netflix. That makes it eligible for the Oscars as this Covid-affected season has been extended with eligibility going through February 28 for the delayed Oscar show, now set for April 25, 2021 with nominations announced March 15. As Deadline originally exclusively reported September 13, it was a $30 million deal for Netflix in a bidding war for the top...

PlayStation 4 owners seeking a bargain over the upcoming Halloween weekend needn’t look further than the console’s online store.
As of writing, Sony’s running two massive sales for all users, regardless of their subscription status, with both boasting huge discounts on hundreds of titles. Some games, such as Deep Silver’s Dead Island: Retro Revenge, are included in both promotions and, as luck would have it, is one of the cheapest items on the entire list right now (priced at $1.24). A spinoff of the mainline action-rpg series, Retro Revenge is presented, instead, in the form of a 16-bit side-scroller where you play as Max. Rather than save the world from a zombie apocalypse, however, the ‘hero’ of this particular adventure is hellbent on carving a bloody path through hordes of undead in order to rescue his cat.

Just to count it off, Peter Frampton’s Do You Feel Like I Do? A Memoir is as much fun as hearing a talking box guitar solo for the first time. Live and with an audience, of course. Each of Frampton’s best-known albums, either with his bands like Humble Pie or in his solo career, are live records. He may also love the studio albums he made, but just like The Who, whose studio albums he loves, those records are a different breed from a live show. Frampton should know, one of the first gigs he ever got was touring as an opening act for The Who.
And, as much fun as they were to see on stage, even their live shows paled when compared to ducking bottle rockets Keith Moon and John Entwistle aimed into his motel windows between shows. Frampton had fun, and it comes across on...

It’s Christmas-time. A young couple, Ashley and Sam, are on a vacation and are talking about their future and the things they want to do together. Ashley wants to have kids, start a family, get married, do the things that many people want to do in life. Sam, however, gets that cold-feet thing going on, jerks away and freaks out a bit. Things get complicated when Nolan, a handsome fellow who happens to be a friend of Sam’s from his childhood, enters the picture. He is much more the husband-type, and so this seasonal trip turns into something of a nightmare. Oh dear.

San Sebastian — Spain’s The Thinklab, based in Madrid since its founding in 2006, has confirmed to Variety that it will be packing up its digital paintbrushes and heading north to founder Julio Soto’s homeland of Navarre where the company will establish a new studio for the purposes of producing two feature-length CGI animated films, and possibly a third.
Soto credits the territory’s generous fiscal incentives and a desire to grow a Spanish animation industry as the impetus for the move.
With one animated feature already under its belt, 2017’s “Deep,” The Thinklab is planning on growing it and Spain’s impact on the international animation community, open to and actively seeking out international partners on its ambitious upcoming feature projects “Evolution” and “Inspector Sun.”
A third title is in early development at the studio, but details won’t be announced until more robust financing is secured.

There’s a typical narrative attached to acrobatic vocalists: Enthusiasm for singing as youngsters, a moment when they reveal their precocity to the world, and then the establishment of irrepressible upward momentum.
This was not quite the path taken by the young R&B singer Marco McKinnis when he was growing up in Virginia. “Initially I started rapping because I was too shy to try singing,” he says. “I kept my singing secret from my family. My parents didn’t know.”
Some secrets are too good to keep quiet forever.
