There is a pattern in the five or so episodes I have seen so far: there are only half a dozen suspects with (almost) iron clad alibis. It could get boring if all installments are this way. This episode was well executed and I felt rewarded in guessing (but not figuring out) who was the culprit.

I'm noticing the klutzy but likeable Kris Marshall as DI Goodman over acts/reacts his role. The others offer smooth performances that don't seem forced. Danny John-Jules (of Red Dwarf) is perfect here as he was as Cat.

Why do they all wear jackets and ties on a tropical island then complain about the heat

It's a decent episode.

I would class this as a decent mystery, rather then a particularly good one. The mystery is such that you can guess who did it, why and how within the first few minutes of it occuring. I wasn't struck on the story or the characters, although I did like Joe Absolom's character.

The mystery wasn't the best, but there were decent elements, notably the dynamic between Dwayne and JP, and JP's housing situation.

Watchable, but forgettable. 6/10

Worked it out so a little disappointing

I always give episodes of murder mysteries where I work out the murderer a low score. Because seriously as a fan of the genre I want to be well and truly stumped. Death in Paradise is one of those series that all the murders are so impossible to work out that ones where you are way ahead of the team is always extra disappointing. Maybe not everyone will work out who and how it was done (but it resembles the very first episode of Paradise) so if you know of that first ever episode you'll know what to look for. Working out the reason Why though was still left to uncover.

Between okay and fine!

Warning: Spoilers
After "Swimming in Murder" was a disaster, I begged:" The next episode must be good", because the fourth season has been pretty unimpressive to say the least. "The Perfect Murder" is not a bad entry, it's like the title of this review says: Somewhere between okay and fine, though it is still light years away from what the show once was.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The episode looks good and sounds wonderful. The acting is much better than the previous time around. All actors gave solid performances, even though, yes, Kris Marshall is sometimes too much. Colin Mcfarlane, I thought, gave the most interesting performance of the guest stars.

. The episode is very fun to watch. The humor is quirky and not overdone. The setting for murder was fine too.

But...

. The murder mystery of "The Perfect Murder" is not perfect at all. Actually it's one of the most forgettable of the series. It really lacked of surprises.

. Also, the solution is pretty obvious this time around. The fact: Jasmin did the deed was pretty apparent by the first time I took a look at that girl. The motive for the murder was an old hat as well.

. Still was not the fan of the direction. Paul Murphy definitely directs a good- looking episode, but his frames lack the energy the previous directors mostly nailed.

Overall, a decent watch, I guess.

5,5/10 HK
