- A love letter to early Italian cinema, Love Among the Ruins is a faux documentary about the miraculous discovery and restoration of a long-lost Italian silent film. The genius of the Lumini brothers, two cinematic visionaries almost overlooked in the history of cinema, ignites the imagination of a contemporary filmmaker who makes the discovery of a lifetime. In 2012, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck northern Italy, severely affecting the historic city of Ferrara and surrounding areas and causing significant damage to the region's Medieval and Renaissance architecture. However, a cracked wall in Ferrara's municipal building revealed a hidden treasure: several cans of old film. Could this be the long-lost silent romance written and directed by the Lumini brothers of Ferrara in the early 1920s? Can the deteriorated film be repaired so new audiences around the world can enjoy this moving story of lovers caught in the events of World War I? Scholars speculate, experts and archivists hypothesize, and finally, the 90-year old film is restored and set to a new musical score. The talents of actors long passed away (or maybe not!) and the beauty of Ferrara in the 1920s (as well as today) are once again seen on the screen with a tale as striking and poignant for today's viewers as it was nearly a century ago.—Anonymous
- Love Among the Ruins is a faux documentary about the miraculous discovery and restoration of a long-lost Italian silent film. More than a parody, the film celebrates the joy of discovering lost art, a rich tradition of filmmaking in Italy, and how a young filmmaker can recreate the artistry of silent film.
- This film is a mockumentary about the discovery of what was thought to be the forever lost 1922 Italian silent movie Amore tra le rovine (English translation: Love Among the Ruins). That discovery takes place in 2012 in Ferrara, Italy in a newly exposed area of a municipal building following a massive earthquake. The documentary follows the authentication of the movie as Amore tra le rovine as was stated on the film canisters, the restoration of what was the largely preserved film (due to the perfect storm of its ninety year hiding place) including the composition of a new musical score to accompany the movie, and discussion with historians and descendants of the filmmakers about the movie itself and its making, it which was in 1923 deemed an artistic failure in its one showing in Ferrara. The discovery of the film is nonetheless considered significant for its historical value. In honor of the centennial of WWI, the restored film is then shown, it a WWI romance between middle class Ester and a soldier named Demode. Ester's cruel father disapproves of the romance and arranges for her to marry older but wealthy Ferraguti, unknown that he is a spy working for the other side. The mock aspect of this film not only applies to the documentary portion, but also the silent film portion, a 1922 Italian silent film called Amore tra le rovine which is made up.—Huggo
