I'm a sucker for a Cinderella story.
lydiajp1 October 2019
The two main actors did a great job of being geeky. If you love Cinderella as much as I do, this movie is for sure worth watching. I give writers credit for their similarities to the fairytale. Some are a little week but I still appreciated them.

Charming masquerade
TheLittleSongbird3 January 2024
'Midnight Masquerade' (2014)

Opening thoughts: The best-known name here, and my main reason for seeing 'Midnight Masquerade', is Autumn Reeser. Much of her output is well worth watching and her performances are consistent in a good way, she is a Hallmark regular for good reason. The other main reason for seeing the film was that it was a take on the 'Cinderella' story, that is one of my all time favourite stories and there are some good to great adaptations and revamps of it. Christopher Russell however is rather take and leave and the 2014 Hallmark output was wildly variable.

'Midnight Masquerade' is one of the better films of theirs from that year. It is a great representation of Reeser, who went on to even better things, and for a relatively early Hallmark film and performance for Russell this was a good deal better than most. While not one of the best or most inspired modern takes on such a timeless story that will never get old regardless of how many times it's narrated or adapted, 'Midnight Masquerade' is a more than worthwhile and very charming take.

Bad things: It isn't perfect. Personally actually did think that the final act is too rushed with the conflict forced and the prematurely easily foreseeable ending too neat. It is true that the film is very predictable, with many typical elements not done much new with.

Perhaps Russell's character could have been stronger in standing up to the conflict and sooner.

Good things: However, there is a lot that is done really well. Reeser is incredibly charming and brings a lot of heart and steel. Russell doesn't come over as stiff or too introverted and is equally easy going and charming. Their chemistry is very natural, sweet and genuine. The supporting characters are ones that are very easy to overplay, and luckily they didn't come over as too caricaturish or hammy. The interaction always felt at ease and not forced. The father and daughter relationship is particularly interesting.

Furthermore, 'Midnight Masquerade' looks good, especially the scenery. The scenery really does entrance and the photography doesn't cheapen it at all. The music at least fits tonally and in placement and has presence without being over-loud. The dialogue is sharp enough and flows naturally, while also having the right amount of sentiment (not too much in quality and quantity). The story is predictable, but also light hearted and charming with a good deal of heart. The Halloween party sees some beautiful design and atmosphere.

Closing thoughts: Concluding, nice film if not a classic.

7/10.

Great watch
jewelch18 February 2021
I liked this movie, yet not enough to give it a 4 or a 5 star. I liked the relationship between the father and daughter best. Their easy going relationship and their love and respect for each other. The father decided to retire and leave his very successful candy business to his daughter. In a way this movie was like a Cinderella story, yet it wasn't the female who had the wicked sisters. It was the male lead who worked as a lawyer for a law firm. He was a nice-Cinderella type who did all the work for the boss's two sons (also lawyers in their Daddy's firm) and never got the credit for what he did. The male lead also was there for his single Mom sister and her daughter. He was a bowling buddy with his niece and the female lead also liked to bowl (with her Dad). At the beginning of the movie these lead characters first meet at the bowling alley and later at the law firm. The "sparks" fly when he shows up to the masquerade ball as a prince (thanks to the seamstress skills of his sister) and she is the princess and they do make a beautiful couple. He loses his crown when he leaves the ball before midnight and she finds it. Thus begins the search for her Prince Charming.... James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 2/18/2021

Of course it's a Cinderella story
Jackbv12315 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Blatant attempt to imitate the Cinderella story complete with a ball, a midnight deadline and a princess (CEO) rather than a prince. The gender roles are reversed also for Rob, the oppressed servant of the Boss man lawyer and his two sons.

Some of the humor and tone borders on the childish, especially Rob's three superiors at the office. Their highhandedness is purely cliche. The two romantic leads fall in love over a single evening which is quick even for Hallmark. Rob has a niece, Ruby, with no apparent matching role in the Cinderella story.

This story shortcuts the quest with the slipper and jumps right to a new twist in the story where Emmett slips into the role of the mystery person from the Ball. Things quickly turn even farther from the original Cinderella which freshens up the rest of the story. There's a bit of a detective mystery mixed in with the romance.

Ruby guilts Rob into something stupid. Doing the right thing IS the right thing, but ironically one of the frequent lines of the movie is the rule to follow here. Dot the i's and cross the t's first. You can't make accusations like this without evidence. And it gets even crazier.

Altogether this movie has several earmarks of a movie aimed at children and families. If looked at from that viewpoint, it's a decent movie and fun.

Gender-flipped Cinderella story
gdump26 August 2015
This is nothing more than a poor interpretation of the Cinderella story done with the gender roles reversed. The acting is atrocious and the story is completely unbelievable. If they were going to make a fantasy, they should have made it more "fantastic."

It is made completely unbelievable because the evil family and the male lead are all lawyers -- a group known for being type-A alpha males. Cinder-guy is completely spineless and would never have made it through any law school let alone gotten an actual job. I bailed before the princess' "mask ball" (Halloween party) was over so I can only assume that it played out as expected with the evil "step-brothers" being revealed and Cinder-guy getting the princess.

A great Hallmark-twisted Cinderella story
jml19885 November 2019
Of course, it's just as predictable as you'd expect, but it was a fun journey to get there. The characters were great all around and well cast.

hot leads in a weak Cinderella remake
Dunham1613 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Cinderella story is here flipped with the guy put upon and the girl the equivalent of a Princess. Hot, believable leads do not in any way cover the think and often poorly edited plot line. The setting of romantic comedy is usually a travelogue of an interesting place however the film is not set in any tourist destination cutting out this important element of romantic comedy and weakening the plot. Worth watching through primarily for the hot leads and some good photography but not competitive as far as one of the better romantic comedies. The evil stepsisters recast as evil brothers is one of the better aspects of the film.

One of my absolute favorites!
rebekahrox14 February 2021
I love this one. I gave it a "10" years ago and have seen it multiple times since. Autumn Reiser is lovely and charming and because of this movie I have always given her the benefit of the doubt in subsequent roles. Christopher Russell is adorable and sexy in the "cinderfella" role. His appeal usually rests with his chemistry with his costars and it couldn't have been better in this, one of his first Hallmark roles. He usually is a bit passive in his starring roles, but it really works in this one.

As the Cinderella story line requires, Rob is bullied and taken advantage of throughout most of the movie. This is quite painful to watch and almost took a little shine off of the romance. When he finally grew a backbone and stood up for himself and did the right thing, it was a huge relief. As his Niece/Fairy godmother says, he is just too nice.

The parallels with the Cinderella story with the role reversal were cleverly done. Autumn Reeser can't stand her high-heels, so she carries them around with her. As the prince figure she is the daughter of a corporate magnate who is training her to take over the business. She is strong and smart and down to earth. The wicked stepmother and step sisters are the head partner and his two sons of her corporate attorneys. Oooooh, they are horrible and evil! Rob is a lawyer that slaves for them while they take all the credit for his hard work. Again, that part was maddening.

Anyway, the writing, the plot, and the cast all come together in this Hallmark in which everything works. Not a weak link in it!

Boring and unromantic
phd_travel17 February 2019
This movie is weak and the little Cinderella homage was hardly cute or romantic. The actor doesn't look like a lawyer too smiling.

Don't bother.

Very Enjoyable
atlasmb30 January 2023
In this reversal of the traditional Cinderella story, Rob Carelli (Christopher Russell) is a Pittsburgh attorney who gets all the work and none of the credit in his firm, run by a father and his two arrogant, bully sons. Rob falls for the head of a client firm, Elyse Samford (Autumn Reeser), but is too reserved to do anything about it.

Russell has that Christopher Reeves-as-Clark-Kent vibe going: ruggedly handsome, but socially awkward, and hiding his true feelings. When he wears a mask, you have to accept that no one could possibly identify him.

This Hallmark romance is one of the better ones. The chemistry between the two leads is strong, and both are very likable. Over and over again, Rob proves himself to be a caring, principled man. The meaty role of his niece Ruby is played by Helen Colliander. And Neil Crone plays the part of Sam, the over-qualified and somewhat cynical office security man Rob befriends.

A very cute romantic comedy
butterfly-7817 November 2014
Loved it! A very cute romantic comedy! I must admit that I was not totally convinced by the first few minutes. But I was hooked at the first appearance of the leading actress, at the bowling. Autumn Reeser lightens the screen merely with her presence and her beauty!

The story: "Once upon a time there was a ravishingly beautiful young woman who stole the heart of a kind-hearted, handsome young man. However, our Cinderella doesn't mope while cleaning the floors; she's Elyse Samford, CEO of Samford Candy, who has just taken over the reins of the family company and has spontaneously invited Samford's longtime legal consultants Higgins Attorneys & Sons to Samford's Halloween Ball. Among those invited is the handsome young attorney Rob Carelli. Smitten with Elyse, he can hardly wait for the ball and even gets a splendid "prince" costume made on measure..."

Some of these Hallmark films are really good, and this is one of them!
saino200127 August 2023
Autumn Reeser is especially beautiful as candy company heiress Elyse Samford, who meets lawyer Rob Carelli (Christopher Russell) while he's at a bowling alley with his cute little niece, Ruby (Helen Colliander). Rob is routinely bullied/taken-advantage-of at the law firm for which he works by CEO Carter Higgins (Chris Gillett) and his two spoiled rich-kid sons, Emmett (Damon Runyan) and Andrew (Danny Smith). The casting for this film is exceptionally good. The doorman at the law office building, Sam (Neil Crone), is a former lawyer who ends up being somewhat of a mentor/advisor to Rob. The storyline centers around an opulent corporate party where Rob ends up playing the Cinderella role opposite beautiful Elyse as the princess, with Rob forced to leave by midnight. I found the whole thing to be very clever and entertaining, and well-worth watching a second time.

Midnight Masquerade
studioAT27 August 2023
This Hallmark film has a sort of Halloween meets Cinderella theme, and that works really well.

It helps when you have a leading lady as good as Autumn Reeser involved, and while who the 'Queen' of Hallmark is remains up for debate, Reeser would be a good shout.

The story holds up, there's some lovely moments - when Hallmark get it right with these films they really get it spot on.

I really liked the Sam character too, and liked the little subplot with him, as it gave the film something a bit extra.

This is charming, this is warm, and that's really what I'm looking for from this sort of film.

Sweet Reverse Cinderella Story
cls19548 September 2023
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a sweet story with a bit of a twist on the old Cinderella story. The characters were well-cast and the story flowed nicely. Even though I had a good idea how it would end, it was still enjoyable and held my attention throughout. The only reason I didn't give it 10 stars was that I had such a hard time getting past Rob's hair. It looked like a bad wig. Was it just a bad wig, or poor styling? I realize this movie is 9 years old, but still. I don't know anyone who had such strange looking hair, even back then. All in all, I spent an hour and a half with a movie that has done Hallmark proud.

A Predictable But Rousing Feel Good Movie
tabuno21 November 2021
A superb romance drama television movie that hits the sweet spot of drama and lightness. Great resolution replay on the big television monitor also helps. This predictable romance includes a carefully crafted plot with just the right hint of reveals that do not reveal too much without feeling manipulated. This great feel good movie elevates itself with good pacing and a strong corporate and rich female lead along with the humble but smart and hardworking lawyer. The script incorporates all the stereotypical elements of the standard romance drama but handles them with a respectful class never overdoing their place in the story. Overall, wonderfully and emotionally pleasing.

Fabulous movie
jewhitmer2515 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent cast, well done everyone. Christopher Russell was incredible as was Autumn Reeser . The chemistry was great.

The plot Picture this, Christopher Russell as Cinderella (Rob), Autumn Reeser as Elyse. The beautiful princess who falls in love with the masked Rob, Chris Gillett as Carter Higgins, the evil stepmother, aka owner of the law firm, Damon Runyan as Emmett. The evil step-sister, aka evil lawyer son #1, and Danny Smith as Andrew, the other evil step-sister, aka evil lawyer son #2.

Carter gives assignments to his sons, evil son 1, Emmett passes some to his brother and some to Rob., Andrew, passes everything to Rob. So Rob is doing the work of 2 other lawyers and getting chastised by Carter for not having enough billable hours and not pulling his weight at the law firm. Because it goes without saying that evil sons 1 & 2 are billing the hours Rob actually worked.

Subplot # 1 Rob has a great Uncle /Niece relationship with his niece Ruby, they go bowling all the time and that is where Elyse met Rob and Ruby.

The plot thickens Elyse invites all the employees to a Halloween Masquerade Ball, Rob's niece Ruby and Ruby's Mom (Rob's sister)make a Prince costume for him. But Rob is ordered to work all night and cannot attend the Ball. Ruby convinces Sam, the doorman (more about him later) to let her in to see her Uncle Rob, and there Ruby convinces him to attend the Ball wearing a mask. However, he must be back at the law firm before midnight, when the building locks down for the night.

So Rob goes to the Ball, dances with Elyse, they have a romantic moment on the balcony, Rob kisses her, he helps her put her shoes back on. Then he hears Carter order Emmett to go to the law firm to pick up some paperwork. So Rob rushes out, loosing his crown in the doorway, where Elyse finds it. Rob narrowly beats Emmitt back to the law firm, Sam locks the doors, allowing Rob time to get back to his cubical, after ditching his costume in a cabinet. Emmett finds Rob hard at work at his desk Subplot #2 Now about Sam, a lawyer who was in love with a woman (also a lawyer) who betrayed him with his business partner and so he quit the law and is now working as the doorman. True to form evil sons 1 & 2 are always rude to the doorman and constantly threatening to have him fired. Rob convinces Sam to take the necessary continuing education classes to restore his law license.

Back to the plot The next day, Elyse calls the law firm to find out who the prince was, Carter says it was his son, Emmett. Emmett actually went as a knight. The two have dinner together, Emmett is his usual arrogant self and Elyse returns home wondering how she could have been so wrong about her prince.

Plot twist Carter urges Elyse to sell he candy company Samford Candy, to a rival company Sanford Candy (they are in a trademark infringement case, because of the similar names and copied packaging. She will make a lot of money and there would be no need for her to sue the other company.

Rob discovers that an old school chum of Emmett's has been buying up shares of Samford Candy using a shell corporation. At the urging and with the help of Ruby and Sam, Rob goes to Elyse with what he has found but he has no actual proof.

Ruby goes to Elyse, they met while bowling, and talks with her. Together they go to Carter with the information. Carter is indignant that Elyse would believe such a thing, and that Ruby is lying. Ruby says no you are lying and that he Uncle Rob was the Prince at the Ball and he fell in love with Elyse. Elyse insists in speaking to both of them. Carter calls both his sons and Rob to his office. Where they insist that they did no wrong and that Emmett was the Prince and no one could prove he wasn't. Rob drops to one knee as he did in the balcony, and helps her slip her shoes back on, while repeating what he said on the balcony. "This is something I learned from my grandfather." Elyse knows now that he is her Prince. She fires Higgins and Sons and tells them her new attorney Rob Corelli will be sending over the paperwork and she wanted all her files by the end of the day.

Rob's new firm is Corelli and Associates, Sam is the Associates. Rob and Elyse get married at the bowling alley where they me, both wearing bowling shoes.

In spite of the predictability of the plot, we are know the story of Cinderella, this is a wonderful movie. The law firm setting adds new twists and turns in a much used plot.

My advice - watch this movie, it is well worth the 82 minutes.

One of the best romantic films I have ever watched
jarvis5418 September 2015
I would not call this film a romantic comedy, it is not a laugh out loud film. I would call this Mills and Boon on the big screen. It is the classic girl meets boy with the traditional bad guys. I have to say that what sets this film apart is Autumn Reisser she is a delightful actress, one of those women any mother would love to have as a daughter in law. Back to the film, Midnight Masquerade is a delightful film and I have watched it four times already and like it each time. Every actor is exceptional the niece the leading man even the bad guys. I like the film so much I am waiting eagerly for the film to be released on DVD. So if you have an afternoon spare and you see Midnight Masquerade in your TV listing, take the time out and watch it you will not be disappointed.

Delighttul twist on an old classic
globalwonder910 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This was a thoroughly charming take on the classic Cinderella Story with a bullied and abused lawyer in the Cinderella role and a newly appointed company CEO as the "princess" charming. Loved how the shoes were worked into the story line, along with the self-serving step-father, and step-brother types in roles of partner owner of law firm and lazy sons. The niece role worked nicely as fairy-godmother type. The Halloween costume party was a nice layer to provide costume and mask to hide the identities. The conclusion was very satisfying and did not feel rush like some hallmark movies have. Looking forward to next season's crop of Hallmark's seasonal movies.

A bit rushed
MickyG3331 February 2024
7.9 stars.

'Midnight Masquerade' is a hot mess consisting of a rushed story and two super cool actors as the leads. I like them both, they occupy positions in my top five male and female Hallmark performers. I knew I was gonna love this movie as soon as I could see what it was about and who was in it. It's a Cinderella where the guy is the one with the glass slippers, except it's not slippers he leaves at the ball. She actually has the "glass" slippers, and he has something else, and he must get back before midnight. A nice little twist on the theme. There is so much potential with this story, but they crammed it all into 90 minutes and they most desperately needed 110 minutes to tell the whole story. It's a shame, but somehow it still entertains.
