Ned Benson’s sophomore feature, The Greatest Hits, is a romantic drama following a young woman who travels back in time anytime she hears a song to the last time and place she heard it with her late boyfriend. It’s a charming film with an incredible soundtrack that will delight any musicophile, not that you would expect any less.
We at FandomWire spoke with Benson and the film’s composer, Ryan Lott (frontman of Son Lux and Oscar nominee for his work on Everything Everywhere All at Once), about their work on the film. Keep reading to find out what they had to say.
The Greatest Hits Interview
In The Greatest Hits, more so than many other films driven by music, the soundtrack essentially functions as a character. We asked the team behind the film where the song choices came into play — whether it was during the writing process or later in production.

The latest from “The Platform” co-producers Mr Miyagi and rising shock meister Hugo Cardozo will be sneak peeked as pix-in-post at this year’s Ventana Sur Blood Window Screenings.
Both are sold, and Cardozo’s “Do Not Enter” produced by Guido Rud’s FilmSharks as sales agents, as this week’s American Film Market attests, are driving ever more into horror genre.
Unlike action thrillers and romantic comedies, the other go-to movie types in a market ever more attuned to streamer tastes, that could be that horror doesn’t need name actors. Mister Smith Ent.’s David Garrett said before the AFM.

From the moment “Home On The Range” became the defining song of the American West, accusations of plagiarism over its lyrics cast a shadow over its success. Dr. Brewster Higley was eventually credited with the poem that became the eternal hit, and while it’s now the state song of Kansas, there was a time when Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico all made claims for the tune as their own. When New York rocker Wendy (Carrie Hamilton) arrives in Tokyo, she winds up working as a hostess in a karaoke bar, despondently singing that very tune to a room full of enthusiastic (and drunk) Japanese salarymen.

The glass slippers still fit Brandy. The singer’s long-awaited return as Cinderella in a new Disney television movie has been given an official first look, courtesy of footage from the set of “Descendants: Rise of Red.” Brandy is reprising the role of Cinderella 26 years after becoming the princess opposite Whitney Houston’s Fairy Godmother in the 1997 television movie “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.”
The set footage also confirmed that “Descendants: Rise of Red” will feature the return of Paolo Montalban, who played Brandy’s Prince Charming in the 1997 movie, which was groundbreaking for its multicultural casting. Charming is now king, and Cinderella is queen.
Variety confirmed last November that Brandy boarded the “Descendants” movie as Cinderella. At the time, the movie musical had the working title of “The Pocketwatch.” The film centers on the relationship between Red (Kylie Cantrall), the rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe...

On October 23rd, 2011, Once Upon A Time premiered on ABC. It was a show about fairytale characters/Disney properties and what happens when they end up in our world. The show lasted for seven years, boasted one spin-off and an active fanbase.
It's been ten years since Emma Swan blew out a candle on a cupcake and made a wish that changed her life, and much like with Revenge and Hart of Dixie, I wanted to mark the occasion.
TV Fanatic staff writers Laura Nowak, Becca Newton, former staff writer Sarah Little, and I discussed what we loved about the show, what we hated, what we shipped, and how we fangirl now that it's all over.
What made you watch Once Upon A Time going in? What expectations did you have of the show? Do you feel the show met those expectations?

Michael K. Williams is another life lost too soon. While we wait for the official cause of death, it’s been reported that drug paraphernalia was found near the 54-year-old Williams’ body and authorities are investigating his demise as an overdose. The history of Hollywood is marked by so many similar endings. While no two deaths from addiction are alike, one thing that most in our industry have in common is the struggle of artistic souls falling deep into substance abuse before trying to reclaim their lives with recovery. Williams was open and honest about his demons. “A lot of people often think that when a person puts down the drug or the alcohol that all the problems go away. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” the actor said this year during an appearance on Tamron Hall’s talk show.

Kevin Lewis will follow up “Willy’s Wonderland” by directing “The Accursed,” a new horror movie about demonic possession that its creators predict will be like if “Sam Raimi and Dario Argento had a love child and James Wan was its uncle.”
Mena Suvari (“American Beauty”), Sarah Grey (Netflix’s “The Order” and DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow”), and Alexis Knapp (“Pitch Perfect” franchise) head up the cast, which also includes Meg Foster (“The Lords of Salem”) and Sarah Dumont (“Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse”). “Willy’s Wonderland,” an action-comedy horror film, became a pandemic era favorite when it was released on VOD and in limited theatrical release last February.
Rob Kennedy (“Midnight Man”) penned the screenplay for “The Accursed.” According to the official description, it centers on a young woman who faces a horrifying past. When her estranged mother dies by suicide, Elly (Grey) is forced to return home from volunteering as a nurse abroad.

So far on “The Masked Dancer,” three of the judges have correctly guessed the identities of some of the costumed dancers. Ken Jeong named Bill Nye as Ice Cube, Brian Austin Green predicted Elizabeth Smart as Moth and Paula Abdul went with Brian McKnight as Cricket. That leaves Ashley Tisdale as the only “Tmd” panelist to not throw out a correct guess … yet. Of course, there are still five masked twirlers in the competition, so Ashley has a chance to get on the board with a point before the winner is ultimately crowned. Wilmer Valderrama and ex Demi Lovato's love lives on...on Netflix. Back in 2015, a year before they broke up, the two collaborated on the animated movie Charming. The film, which the 30-year-old actor co-produced, was released in theaters overseas in 2018. On Friday, Jan. 8, the movie hit Netflix for North American audiences for the first time. Valderrama shared a trailer for the film on his Instagram page, praising Lovato, 28, and the rest of the cast, which includes Avril Lavigne, Ashley Tisdale, Nia Vardalos, Sia and John Cleese. "After years of production and love for this project I am thrilled to share that the untold story of Prince Charming (our first Latino Prince)...

Netflix is adding a bunch of great new titles today. This Friday, January 8th, the streaming service has made seven fresh movies and TV shows available and what’s more, they’re all originals. There’s new family content, documentaries, international titles, anime and pretty much something to cover all bases. There’s nothing quite as big as yesterday’s Pieces of a Woman – the awards-worthy indie drama – but these newbies are still worth checking out.
First up, animated effort Charming debuts today. Though released in other territories back in 2018 and 2019, it’s only now making its way to the US and it sports a twisted fairy tale narrative in which Prince Charming must go on a quest to find his true love, after becoming engaged to Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne and Ashley Tisdale star.

First up, arriving on HBO Max is The King of Staten Island, a semi-autobiographical comedy drama partly inspired by the life of its star, comedian and SNL alum Pete Davidson. A waster high school dropout still living with his mother dreams of becoming a tattoo artist, but is stifled by his medical and mental health issues, which are only compounded when his mom begins dating a new man who’s a firefighter like his deceased father.
Also on HBO Max is season 2 of The Alienist, subtitled Angel of Darkness after the novel on which it’s based, seeing the return of its ad hoc team of investigators, this time looking into the brutal deaths of young children that may be the work of a serial killer, while digging into familiar themes of societal status,...

Aside from the members of the Midnight Society, perhaps the most prolific recurring character in the ’90s run of Are You Afraid of the Dark? was the enigmatic magician Sardo, so fans of the original series may be pleased to see a new take on the Magic Mansion owner featuring prominently in the official trailer for the second season of the Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival, titled Curse of the Shadows, which will kick off its six-episode season on Friday, February 12th on Nickelodeon.
Press Release: Hollywood, Calif.--Jan. 8, 2021--Nickelodeon has revealed the trailer for the long-awaited season two debut of Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows, the beloved horror anthology series based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic. The Midnight Society’s campfire was restoked—figuratively and literally—for the 2019 Halloween season by Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-episode miniseries, which enticed audiences old and new for more chilling exploits from a new generation of the classic kid coterie of scare-chasers. Thus, the network subsequently greenlit Season 2, this time for six episodes, which begin their weekly run in February.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Curse of the Shadows is the title of Season 2, indicating that the series will again eschew its classic single-episode story format to utilize the entirety of a season to tell one epic story, having moved on from the 2019 miniseries storyline centered on demented ringmaster Mr. Tophat and his Carnival of Doom. Moreover, we’re already getting an all-new Midnight Society; a lineup tasked with pursuing a mysterious creature called the Shadowman.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

One of my favorite viewing experiences this year was finally catching up on Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival, and while I'm bummed that the characters from the first season won't be returning, I'm still thrilled to see whatever the new Midnight Society cooks up next around the campfire.
With the new season of Are You Afraid of the Dark? premiering sometime in 2021, Nickelodeon is celebrating the New Year a bit early with their first teaser video for the new season that reveals its official title: Curse of the Shadows.
While the first season of the Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival (titled Carnival of Doom) featured three episodes, the new season will comprise six episodes.
You can check out the new trailer below (from Nickelodeon's official Twitter account), and we also have an excerpt from the official press release for the new season that will...

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. As it’s the first day of September, Disney Plus has broken its rule of only adding new content every Friday to make one new movie available to stream. And it’s one of the Mouse House’s recent live-action remakes. This time, it’s not amongst their highest grossing efforts, but it is one of the most warmly received of the lot. We’re talking about Cinderella, the 2015 reimagining of the 1950 animated classic.
Though Cinderella has already been accessible in various territories around the globe, today is the first time that the film has gone up on Disney Plus in the U.S. This version stars Lily James in her first major Hollywood role, which she’s since followed up with the likes of Baby Driver, Yesterday and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, among others. Richard Madden, meanwhile, plays Prince Charming, here given the name Kit.

Michel Hazanavicius is back with The Lost Prince, a charming and somewhat moving tale of a father coming to terms with his daughter’s independence. To mark the film’s release we spoke to the French filmmaker via Zoom, as he tells us about this challenging realisation as a parent that one day, your children will get older and less reliant on dad.
He talks about the balancing of the more surreal, enchanting aspects of this film with the deeper, profound moments, and whether he felt Pixar movies were an inspiration to the project. He also tells us how brilliant Omar Sy is to collaborate with, though admits seeing the actor kiss his wife – Berenice Bejo – isn’t something he’d recommend.
We also speak to Hazanavicius about his recent role at the Sarajevo Film Festival as head of the jury, and how that experience was for him, under new social-distancing measures.

When the Los Angeles based band the Go-Go’s was at the top of the rock world in the 1980s, there were easy labels to describe the five young women who were the first all-female band to play their own instruments, write their own songs and hit No. 1 on the charts.
“They would always describe us as cute, bubbly and effervescent,” lead singer Belinda Carlisle said at theWrap’s studio at Sundance Film Festival, where director Alison Ellwood’s documentary “The Go-Go’s” premiered in January. “It was very superficial and it didn’t describe who we really are.”
“It’s such a ready-made hook,” bassist Kathy Valentine added. “It fits into the general myth of Cinderella and Prince Charming. We were Cinderella and the public was Prince Charming, and they just embraced the myth of this scrappy little band. It fit with the archetypes — the gender boxes, I like to call them.

It started with a kiss. How did it end up like this?
That is what fans of Once Upon A Time have been asking for years because what was once an epic testament to the power of love stopped making sense roughly midway through the series.
True love's kiss was more or less an invention of Disney.
If you read the original versions of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Beauty and the Beast, none of the curses are broken by True Love's Kiss.
Disney's Snow White was the first time the True Love's Kiss trope was used, and Disney kept using it in subsequent movies. They even parodied the idea in Disney's Enchanted with the song "True Love's Kiss."

The Walt Disney Company has lately made something of an artform out of reimagining its own animated features into (often) billion-dollar live-action films, starting with Alice in Wonderland in 2010 and continuing with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, as well as the photorealistic computer animated remake of The Lion King.
A live-action version of Mulan, said to be more faithful to the original Chinese folktale than Disney’s 1998 animated film, is set to premiere this Spring, with Cruella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan & Wendy, The Sword in the Stone, Lilo & Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Bambi, as well as Jungle Book and Aladdin sequels and possible Tinker Bell and Prince Charming projects, slated to be remade over the coming years.
