How does a seemingly ordinary college student go from being a full time student to being a full time sex worker? That's the mystery this series attempts to examine.
This is my third look at the first episode. I really liked this series but I still remain puzzled as to the motivation of Christine Reade. This review will examine only her life outside the classroom and outside the law firm to try to answer how she moves to being a sex worker.
There are three scenes which give a clue to her underlying character. First, she meets her study partner at a hotel where the study partner, who is already a sex worker, has just finished with a client. He has left and allowed her to stay in the room til checkout. The two women decide to order room service. Christine needlessly orders the two most expensive bottles that the hotel has to offer. What does this tell us? Two things. First, she has no regard for her benefactor who didn't expect to be this generous. Second, isn't free food and wine enough? Why did it have to be $1,600 of wine?
Second, she and her study partner go to a house that her longtime client has provided her. It's remote from the city and extremely expensive. There are several high priced cars that are only driven in the summer. Christine spends a lot of time taking not only the wealth of this place in but also the relationship her study partner has with her client. She is very interested.
Third, Christine is asked to accompany her friend on a paid date. Her friend is with her regular client and Christine is paired with Martin, a reasonably attractive middle age lawyer. They banter. Later Christine and her friend meet in the restroom. Her friend tells her Martin likes her and gives her an envelope with several hundred dollars in it. Christine is told its just drinks; no pressure. However as soon as she returns to Martin, the other couple departs leaving Christine and Martin alone. Christine seems a little flummoxed and maybe frightened. After she assures Martin she's okay, Martin suggests they get out of here. The episode ends. We don't know whether she had sex with Martin or whether he just took her home.
There is one more interesting component to this episode. Christine's sex drive. She is an attractive woman in her early 20s. She is out with her study partner and apparently would like sex so she approaches a guy her age and says she thinks he's attractive and she wants to have sex with him. And of course he agrees. Back in his room, they make out then Christine says that she wants him to watch her. He's puzzled. She moves across from him, exposes her breasts and starts to masturbate. He gets turned out and does the same. Later she declines his offer to stay the night and leaves. The next time we see the guy, he approaches her in a bar but she shuts him down.
What does this tell us about Christine and sex. First, she likes it. Second, she likes to get it when she wants or needs it and can. Third, she likes to be in control. How will this attributes help her or hinder her if she pursues sex work (as she most certainly will) in later episodes. Stay tuned.
