A huge leap
onion_bums10 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This particular episode is yet another one which stands out. We saw a remarkable progress in story and got something we were all waiting for.

THE REUNION OF HANNIBAL AND WILL

Somewhere down the line, you will actually start to feel sorry for Will Graham. One could have a horrible life but it would never match his miserable existence. He was framed for murder, arrested, then he was stabbed (gutted) by his friend and psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He viewed Abigail Hobbs as a daughter and he saw her throat getting slit and die before him. He then recovered, and proceeded to travel to Florence, Italy with Chiyo and she pushed him off a train.

And now, he gets shot by Chiyo. One might start to wonder how worse the fate of a character can be.

Then Hannibal starts sawing into his skull like Hannibal (Anthony Hopkins) did to Paul Krendler in Hannibal (2001).

In the last and final scene, we see him dangling upside down from a meat hook, all bloody and captured, along with Hannibal.

This episode is brilliantly written and well directed. It's a shame that we have just seven episodes left before the season (or maybe the show) comes to an end altogether.

By focusing on its female characters, Dolce becomes one of Hannibal's greatest episodes
ryanjmorris18 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
With every week that passes I seem to become more angry at NBC for cancelling this show. Any programme that can put out an episode as good as Dolce deserves the ability to run for as long as the writers intend, which, in Hannibal's case, is seven seasons. We're going to be cut off at three and that thought gets more upsetting with each episode of this excellent third season. After the highs of last week's stellar Contorno, this show has somehow topped itself again with Dolce, an episode that fires twist after twist whilst also finally placing its female characters into the spotlight for the first time of its entire run. It is probably no secret that Hannibal's female characters have been consistently less developed than its male ones, but Dolce has corrected that entirely, offering Bedelia, Alana and Margo a series of wonderfully empowering sequences that come together to place Dolce as possibly the greatest hour of television this year. And, yes, that does include Game of Thrones' The Dance of Dragons.

This episode focused heavily on the idea of identity and duality, the idea that two people can be one or, conversely, that one person can be two. This theme was identified most clearly in Alana and Margo's kaleidoscopic sex sequence that opens the episode's second half. Hannibal has always been more focused on sexual tension rather than actual sex, but when it does go the full mile, it never faults. Season two's imaginary threesome between Hannibal, Will and Alana was a stunning sequence, and Alana and Margo's scene this time around was even more mesmerising. Using kaleidoscopic imagery both acts as a way of not resorting to gratuitous nudity but also conforming with the episode's theme of duality. Alana and Margo were repeatedly shown as one person throughout the scene as their arms, legs, faces and everything else swirled around the screen, also repeatedly offering vaginal visual metaphors to further emphasis this episode's focus on its women. It was a truly stunning sequence that shows that sex on TV can still be done artfully, tastefully, and beautifully.

Also examined heavily in this episode was Bedelia, a character who has been looked at considerably this season but always by Hannibal's side. In Dolce, Bedelia was away from Hannibal, and was therefore given her own time to shine. And Gillian Anderson stepped up to this sublimely, giving her best performance of the season to date. It has often been asked this season as to whether Bedelia was observing or participating in Hannibal's actions, so it was refreshing to see Hannibal taken away from her entirely. Shooting heroine in order to give the impression that Hannibal had been drugging her, Bedelia took entire control of her situation after it didn't go the way she imagined, using her female charm to aid the Italian Polizia investigation into Hannibal whilst also saving herself from any trouble. Her discussion with Chiyoh early in the episode powerfully demonstrated the effect that Hannibal has on the women in his life, but Bedelia seems to have pushed well and truly past the stage Chiyoh is at. "You may make a meal of me yet, Hannibal" she tells him in the episode's cold opening, "But not today".

But, of course, this episode couldn't dedicate its entire run time to its women characters, as this is after all a story of two men. Hannibal and Will finally came together again in tonight's episode, a scene ingeniously scored with similar music to their moments together in season two's finale in order to fully show the relationship these two have. The fact that they smile at each other after everything that has taken place between now and the events of Mizumono is a gut wrenching touch, but there isn't much time for niceties. Within fifteen minutes, Chiyoh has shot Will, and Hannibal has him strapped to a dinner table opposite Jack Crawford as he begins slicing Will's scalp open with a buzz saw. But then we cut to black, and the episode returns to Muskrat Farm, where Hannibal and Will are seen hanging upside down in the slaughterhouse as Mason Verger enters and welcomes them to his home. In a show so loaded with shocks, twists and turns, this could well rank as one of its very best.

How did they get there? How much time has taken place between now and next week's installment? What happened to Jack? There are countless questions hanging in the balance that will, hopefully, be answered next week before the show jumps three years into the future to begin its Red Dragon arc in its final stretch of episodes. But before it can do that, Hannibal had to allocate time to its female characters, and Dolce took on that responsibility excellently, offering both visually beautiful and thematically empowering moments for each of the show's main women. At the beginning of this season I was doubtful that the show could hit the heights of its second year. Hannibal's second season is, after all, my personal favourite television season of all time. But if season three can keep this standard up for it's mid season finale next week, and then retain it even longer for its highly anticipated Red Dragon arc to conclude the show, then I foresee a masterpiece two years in a row.

Breathtaking

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is visually stunning, as per usual, but beyond that, the gallery scene may be the most romantic thing hung I've ever seen on television.

Easily one of the worst episodes in the series
blakesnodgrass22 May 2020
I don't see how ANYONE could enjoy this episode more than season 1 or season 2. The couple of reviews currently up suggest this is one of the best episodes in the series, and I couldn't disagree more. I feel like the show has dramatically decreased in quality since the end of season 2. I gave it 6 stars because I've been binge watching all 3 seasons and I'm invested enough in the story to see it through, but I almost wish Hannibal had been canceled after season 2. I finished season 2 today, and after 6 episodes into season 3, I can confidently say this show lost its steam, and it's readily apparent. Very unfortunate. Hopefully the last few episodes will be better...

Too much already.

Ok, a touch of realism would really help here. The last few episodes (and dare I say even further back) have had pointless dialogue. Yes, there are fantastic images but the actual story line is now muddled up pretty well. I have to disagree with raves and write that I am now getting bored. Sometimes you have to know when to end a story or at least go in a completely different plot direction.

Not Impressed [7.5/10]

Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Hannibal Season 3 Episode 6: Episode 5 was great and I gave it a rating of 8.4/10. Bedelia cares enough to treat Hannibal's wounds. The relationship between Hannibal and Bedelia is so sick and disturbing. I don't know who is crazier. I wonder what is inside Bedelia's syringe. If Mason ever has a child I feel so bad for the child. Alana and Margot together, that seems random. I wonder why Chiyo saved Hannibal. Merger now has both Hannibal and Will, but how? Is this some kind of time jump? Makes no sense. Anyway, overall this episode is good but I cant say im impressed. My rating is 7.5/10.

In A Ginger Black Vinaigrette Sauce...
wandernn1-81-6832747 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Begin here with what has become the series signature drip drip drip of some sort of fluid into a puddle. Whether it be rain, or blood, or just water from a faucet. Lecter's long limping walk home from the museum, where he gets cleaned up by... Bedelia. Such a loving wife, Mrs. Fell.

Crawford supervises Pazzi's body being carted off, and look who shows up? Graham. Weird there was no other Italian officials there. Just Crawford, and Graham? Neither of whom is officially with the US bureau anymore. Weird they aren't brought in for questioning or anything??? They are allowed freely to wander around in Dr. Fell's museum, which isn't that a crime scene???

-1 Star for Real Total Lack of Realism here. And we aren't past the opening sequence.

Lecter is almost fine again, talking with his wife. Don't they know where Dr. Fell lives? Why aren't the police banging down the door??? Didn't Crawford just break Lecter's arm in that fight??? Bedelia wonders what Lecter will say about her 'when they come' for him. How come they aren't coming for him right now???

-1 Star again for the opening sequences. So bad this time. Usually I like them a lot.

Ahead to dinner prepared by Cordell, the nurse, master-chef and henchman, for Pig Man. This Cordell man is he unusually skilled. Here, Spit. LOL Wonderful vision Pig Man has for the displaying of Lecter as a meal.

+1 Star for the visual....

Pig MAN gets the phone call to turn on the TV and see what happened to his bounty hunter, Inspector Pazzi. Dr. Bloom and Pig Man commiserate together about Pazzi's passing.

Ruh Roh, Bedelia is surprised by Accent Girl who just walks in unannounced into the Lecter lair. Loving some Gillian Andersen in this part really. She's very good as Bedelia overall. Graham and Crawford show up now, to talk to Bedelia. Not the Police??? 'My name is Lydia Fell.' Graham and Crawford they 'dont believe her'.

Pig Man meets with his sister, and discusses his desire to have a baby with her. Truly a sick man, this Pig Man!!!! Haha.

Lecter And Graham meet in front of a Botticelli painting. Is this Graham's vision??? Or Lecter's? Who is dreaming here??? Wait this is real?? Accent Girl is waiting outside with a....tranquilizer rifle scoped for sniping? And she snipes... Graham???

Okay move on to the next scene. Whois this??? Bloom and Margot Verger, getting it on?? Okay THAT'S unexpected. Odd.

The Policia, they finally arrive to question Mrs. Fell. Mrs. Fell is accompanied by Jack Crawford, who has an excuse for everything on why he's there, and why he didn't inform the Policia about anything regarding Lecter.

Oh nevermind that was a real rifle that Graham was shot with!!! How did she suddenly get access to a sniper rifle in the middle of an Italian city. Or did she bring it from Lithuania? Kinda weird that really doesn't make much sense.

-1 Star for some more lack of logical thought in regards to Accent Girl being able to snipe Graham.

This is great though to see Graham back at Lecter's table. Who knows where that table might be? He has escaped somehow completely after his fight with Crawford and malingering conversation with 'Mrs. Fell.' Again, Lecter's wounds seem to be completely healed.

Haha, Accent Girl lures Crawford into a trap in Lecter's lair. Now Lecter has both Crawford and Graham. Hahahaha and at the end of this one, Lecter gets medieval on Graham apparently.

+1 Star for the end sequence. Lovely.

Brilliant moments in this episode were not enough to outweigh the dumb ones. 4/10

Hannibal the omnipotent. Hannibal the invincible
gedikreverdi29 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Hannibal the invincible captured both jack and will. Chiyo shot Will with a sniper before he got to stab Hannibal. The detective questioning Hannibal's wife who believes she's the woman whose husband was murdered by Hannibal so that he can get into his place as an academician. Hannibal captured will and Jack at a secret apartment and fed them and opened Will's skull. Will woke up at the farm of mason with someone I can't recognize. Who delivered them? Does it have to be this abstract and so unlike season 2 which was extremely beautiful.
