Lucy Hale and Lucas Till are starring in Spike Lee’s civil rights drama “Son of the South,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Everyone in the thriller Hereditary is downright terrifying. As Annie, the matriarch of the Graham family, Toni Collette gave us chills. As for her little girl, Charlie? While she's adorable at first, things with her get ugly fast. And we don't even know how to start discussing the scenes featuring Annie's son, Peter, bashing his head against a desk - it's enough to give you instant nightmares.
Like us, in between screaming and being horrified at what you were seeing, you might have taken a moment to wonder where in the world you know Peter Graham from. The answer: lots of places.
You might recognize the actor, Alex Wolff, from a string of recent movies. He briefly pops up as "Young Spencer" (or the younger version of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character) in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, as well as John "Derf" Backderf, the good...

High school is a time when even the most centered people struggle with the turbulent nature of four years’ worth of emotional friendships, raging hormones and impending adulthood. And for those whose impulses are much darker -- like the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer -- it can be ground zero for what’s yet to come.
The new film My Friend Dahmer, which is in theaters on Nov. 3, explores the genesis of Dahmer’s desires through the prism of high school and the viewpoint of his friend, John “Derf” Backderf, who would grow up to write the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name on which the film is based. Alex Wolff, who steps into Derf’s shoes, tells Et the script thrilled him from the start because of its dual nature.
“I was intrigued by the fact that it was about friendship in the 1970s while also tackling this serial killer narrative,” he says. “It’s...

Elusive and reclusive during his lifetime, author J.D. Salinger is proving to be just the same after his death. Despite a high profile documentary (“Salinger“), and one indie drama (“Coming Through The Rye“), no one has really unlocked the enigma of the highly influential author. But it’s not without trying, as another movie is hoping to offer some insight into the man who created Holden Caulfield and the Glass family.

20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

A by-the-books biopic about Catcher in the Rye helmer J.D. Salinger, Danny Strong‘s Rebel in the Rye has quite a story to tell. Salinger was an eccentric hermit that the world never fully got. He helped shape a post-50s revolution with his landmark novel featuring its ever-so-pessimistic main character, Holden Caulfield.
The film starts off with Salinger’s stay at Columbia University, where he studied writing under the tutelage of Whit Burnett (the editor of Story magazine, as played movingly by Kevin Spacey). Already before class even begins Salinger confronts Burnett with his own criteria of what writing should be like. The two end up finding a middle ground and having a prosperous friendship that is at the heart Strong’s film.
Strong has Kenneth Slawenski’s autobiography, A Life, as his guide and, for the most part, he does quite well in portraying the restless agony that...

Coming Through The Rye screens Sunday, Nov. 6 at 12:30pm at The Tivoli Theater as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Ticket information can be found Here.
Inspired by events from the filmmaker’s own life, Coming Through The Rye is the poignant and funny story of 16-year-old Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff), who in 1969 has landed at an all-boys boarding school for all the wrong reasons. Ostracized by nearly everyone, he clings to the unshakable belief that he will someday play Holden Caulfield — the main character in “The Catcher in the Rye — on Broadway and in the movies. Jamie adapts the novel into a play to put on at school, but after a series of increasingly hostile incidents with students, he runs away with a quirky townie, DeeDee (Stefania Owen), to find the book’s author, J.D. Salinger (Chris Cooper). On their odyssey to find the reclusive writer,...

The traditional fall season of award-season releases gets a late start on Friday with “Moonlight” (A24) and “The Handmaiden” (Magnolia) leading the way. It can’t come a moment too soon.
This weekend, top-quality films “Certain Women” (IFC), “Christine” (The Orchard), “Miss Hokusai” (Gkids) and “Aquarius” (Vitagraph) competed in limited openings. All nabbed good or better reviews. But none scored at the level likely to lead to the sort of wider response and multi-million grosses that normally come along regularly at this time of year.
The weakness can be seen among later-week grosses as films expand. There hasn’t been a breakout crossover release of any significance since “Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate), which is still grossing better than most recent releases.
“Shin Godzilla” (Funimation) showed strength with a midweek opening in a mixed plan of bookings. Similar to “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” (Abramorama), out-of- the-box distribution seems to be finding positive results.

Warner Bros.'s The Accountant stormed well ahead of BoxOfficeMojo's weekend forecast to finish #1 for the weekend. The Ben Affleck starrer more than than doubled its closest competition, which found a pair of Universal titles competing for second place between the debut of Kevin Hart: What Now? and last weekend's #1 film, The Girl on the Train. Meanwhile, Open Road's Max Steel finished outside the top ten with one of the worst openings ever for a film debuting in over 2,000 theaters. Overall, the top twelve only finished slightly higher than Mojo's projections despite The Accountant over-performing, bringing in a combined $88.5 million, which is down 7.4% compared to last weekend and down nearly 21% compared to last year. At #1, The Accountant rung up an estimated $24.7 million over the weekend, well ahead of not only Mojo's forecasts but industry expectations that were anticipating an opening anywhere from $15-20 million. While the opening is relatively...

The ongoing debate over whether J.D. Salinger should have sold the stage and screen rights to “The Catcher In The Rye,” one of the most influential books of all time, has been argued for years, sometimes reaching Hume proportions of whether or not God exists. Some believe that Salinger simply lacked the imagination to know where the future of film might have taken his very “novelistic” novel, as movie-making has evolved and tested the boundaries of visually portraying one’s thoughts.

Chances are that many adolescents who read J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” end up identifying with the novel’s wayward and angst-ridden protagonist, Holden Caulfield. They feel his cynicism about life, his fear of becoming an adult and his anger about hypocrites, whom he dubs “phonies.” It’s as if the story is about them. In writer-director James Steven Sadwith’s first theatrical feature, the 1969-set “Coming Through the Rye,” Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”) is one such “Catcher” devotee. He’s so enamored by the book, in fact, that he’s...

Emmy-winning director James Steven Sadwith makes his feature-directing debut with a story close to his heart. Coming Through the Rye fictionalizes his experiences as a 1969 boarding-school teen and his adventure finding reclusive author J.D. Salinger. We assume liberties were taken, considering the opening caption loquaciously elongates the usual “inspired by” to “a lot of this is inspired by real events if you want to know the truth,” but that’s okay — this sort of chatty flourish aligns perfectly with the character created as his stand-in. Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff) is nothing if not borderline obnoxious in this way. (Think an endearing Max Fischer from Rushmore.) Nerves obviously pull his string while fear and guilt refuse to let it retract — the reasons why coming soon enough.

The first trailer for Coming Through the Rye has been released, following a boy (Alex Wolff) in 1969 whose only ambition is to adapt the elusive author J.D. Salinger‘s (Chris Cooper) The Catcher in the Rye. To do so, he has to travel cross country to get permission from the scribe himself. Along the way he runs into a girl, and the pair’s trip changes from a search for answers to an exploration of love, sexual awakening, and loss. You know, coming of age stuff.
Directed and co-penned by James Steven Sadwith, and apparently based on a true story, the trailer attempts to strike a balance between youthful romance and the crushing realities of aging and disappointments. What remains to be seen is if the film can find its own unique tone to create something poignant. See the trailer, along with a poster below, for the film that also...

“Don’t Look Down,” the extraordinary true story of Richard Branson and his daring attempt to cross the Atlantic and Pacific in the world’s largest hot air balloon, is coming to theaters and VOD this November. A new trailer for the documentary was just released and shows the business magnate reliving the death-defying journeys he took in the mid ‘80s and early ‘90s.
“I saw my life flash before my eyes,” recalls Barnson in the clip. “It was just me standing on top of the capsule looking down at the water. I wrote a letter to the kids telling them how much I loved them, and then I prepared to jump.”
Directed by Daniel Gordon, the film captures the intensity and passion of the team that was involved in the project, as well as features interviews with key players and never-before-seen archival footage that was captured at that time.

"Why are you doing this?" "I like an adventure." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Coming Through the Rye, which is yet another story about one person's fascinating with Jd Salinger's seminal novel "The Catcher in the Rye". The film tells the "filmmaker's own true story" about a 16-year-old boy who adapts the book into a play then runs away from his boarding school to go looking for author Jd Salinger in the New Hampshire mountains. It reminds me a bit of Searching for Bobby Fischer, a similar story about a boy searching for a long, lost reclusive individual. Alex Wolff stars, and he meets Stefania Owen along the way. Chris Cooper plays Salinger and the cast includes Adrian Pasdar and Amy Parrish. This seems like it might have something to offer fans of Salinger and his work. Have a look. Here's the trailer...

J.D. Salinger’s coming of age tale The Catcher in the Rye has long appealed to a certain swath of adolescents who see themselves in Holden Caulfield. In James Sadwith’s new film Coming Through the Rye, one such adolescent gets a shot at meeting his idol, as he travels in search of the reclusive author to get the rights to the novel.
Coming Through the Rye centers on Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff), a sixteen year old outcast in a boarding school who deeply identifies with the protagonist of Salinger’s novel. He wants to adapt the story into a play for his school, but is told he needs to get the rights from Salinger (Chris Cooper). So he leaves on a cross-country journey to find the notoriously reclusive writer and obtain his approval for the play – which, as this latest trailer shows us, Salinger is reluctant to give.
