Cleverly constructed, with a spooky vibe.

There must always be a temptation for a drama show to have an Ancient Egyptian inspired story, just as Poirot had with the Egyptian Tomb, Father Brown gets his outing here.

It's a really clever story, with a well constructed plot and a genuinely spooky vibe throughout.

Some great character play, with secrets unearthed and some harsh truths brought home. The acting is great, Geraldine Alexander, David Bamber and Josh O'Connor are all particularly good.

Clever, visually great and genuinely intriguing. This one's a goodie. 8/10

The Curse of Amenhotep

Warning: Spoilers
Amenhotep is a very popular name in fiction when it comes to all things Egyptian. This was a very interesting episode inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamun and the rumoured but obviously non-existant curse that the newspapers believed surround the discovery of his tomb. I think this was a well done episode, not he best but the top 50%.

Was watching Fr Brown out of the side of my when all of sudden I saw the handsome face of Josh OConnor come on screen.

Well, it was worth watching for that.

Because it starts off with that gasbag sir raleigh bellowing and bellowing like a fool, and he does it several times throughout. Was hoping the curse got him. Have seen this gasbag in other productions, and he is typical of the arrogant english gasbag that thinks bellowing is good acting.

Mummy and Father Brown

Warning: Spoilers
I've titled this review Mummy and Father Brown because this episode is about an Egyptian mummy (or mommy here in the USA) and the curse of it, hence The Curse of Amenhotep. This episode reminded me of Howard Carter and Tutenkamen. Also The Curse of Amenhotep guest stars two actors who were in To Play The King, David Bamber and Nicholas Farrell.

The ending was quite mystical and made you wonder about the curse in Father Brown mythology. Anyway, I'm enjoying having a mini-bingewatch of Father Brown, long with Magnum, P. I. (the original one) and Superstore. Anyway, this episode is worth watching at least once.

The Curse of Amenhotep
Prismark1021 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Shades of King Tutankhamen's curse in this episode. Arrogant Archaeologist Sir Raleigh Beresford lost his first wife from a supposed curse when he discovered the tomb of Amenhotep some years earlier.

Now he has returned to his mansion which also houses a museum, married to the much younger Caterina. She insists on opening the sarcophagus that holds the remains of Amenhotep. Caterina is later found dying in a locked room.

Father Brown and Lady Felicia who were visiting the museum investigate. Suspicions are aroused that Sir Ralph's son Leo might had been having an affair with Caterina. Raleigh's loyal secretary Valerie confesses to the murder but Father Brown doubts her motive.

Essentially this is the locked room mystery with shades of the supernatural. I thought the method for murder and reveal was elegantly constructed and Father Brown is left in danger.

The curse...

Warning: Spoilers
Father Brown and Lady Felicia are visiting a museum owned by her Egyptologist friend Sir Raleigh Beresford, who has just married the much younger Caterina. Caterina insists on opening a sarcophagus, an action which allegedly carries a curse and some time later she is found dying in a locked room. Sir Ralph's son Leo was having an affair with Caterina, making him a prime suspect, but then Raleigh's adoring secretary Valerie admits to the murder. Father Brown does not believe her and discredits her account before unmasking the real killer.

Mummies, curses, infidelity, an Indiana Jones lookalike and a locked room mystery - what's there not to like? It's an enjoyable episode with a slight supernatural feel, especially with the culprit getting pulled into the water by seaweed.
