Indie film where The Little Mermaid becomes a stripper.
Silver7924 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As stated in summary, it's an indie film with booze, drugs, and the mermaid becomes a stripper. Don't watch it with the kids! Feels like a raunchy Lifetime movie. Okay if you like that sort of thing. The actors, camera crew and musicians all do well with what they have. I'm quite annoyed with all the fake 10 star reviews that are obviously from people who are associated with the film. People are less likely to be disappointed if you present it for what it is.

Besides the gorgeous actress who plays Ariel, this was a movie that I wish I had not watched. Only... it does now make me curious to read the original tale and see what liberties were taken by these guys and by Disney.

Very low budget and really comes across like a college film project, very few characters and very cheap sets and simple dialogue. Everything is left to the imagination!

Could have made a better film using my smartphone
phantasmda23 March 2017
Funny how the few "glowing" reviews of this are from people who signed up a month ago and wrote ONE review saying how magical this is.

Trust me, it's awful, slow, depressing, poorly filmed, woefully acted, reeks of micro budget and it's just a painful watch.

It's not often I come across a film like this, that is so terrible, it makes you question how some people really are allowed to make movies. This really does feel like something that was put together for public access TV.

I'm guessing that given another month or so, the rating numbers on here will drop drastically once the honest ratings from genuine movie goers are totted up.

Real bottom of the barrel stuff with zero redeeming features I'm afraid.

Such potential...
lolop3128 October 2018
I love the idea of a dark storyline, but maaaaan the acting was terrible! The storyline itself was stupid as as hell I can't belive this got funded. I promise you I could write something 10X better in a few hours. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and watched it but it was trash.

Just horrible, amateurish... I regret every minute of it
sidacocoa23 March 2017
I can't believe I am even writing a review. I don't know what the previous reviewers were on (may be affiliated with the creators) but this was probably the worst movie I've ever seen.

The modern take on this classic tale had so much potential but the execution was beyond terrible. This felt like a student project than anything. Obviously they had no budget, but you don't need money to tell an interesting story. This had nothing to say. The pacing was all off, the introduction doesn't make sense at all, bad acting and bad dialogue (almost on the level of The Room), bland shallow characters, did not buy the central love story at all, and the whole stripper thing did not make sense and felt exploitative!!!

It's a shame because there were some artful camera work, just the story and direction was so amateurish and made no sense at all.

I had to keep skipping ahead it was slow, boring and unrealistic
lovelightandoil13 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ugh, way to turn my favorite princess into a stripper. As a kid I read the original story about her turning into foam. It was sad, it wasn't a happy ending. I like that they tried to give the story a new twist, but to turn her into a stripper? Why?! And the characters were so unrealistic. Who lets a complete stranger into their home and leaves? The girl obviously needed help so call 911. Why didn't the photographer ask the Sea Witch what her "friends" name was?! Ugh. Sorry but this movie was really lame.

Screams low Budget but not a horrible movie
jadediamond29 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A modern day retelling of Hans Christen's The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid makes a deal with the sea witch to sell her voice in exchange for a chance to be in love with a cute human male who turns how to be a jerk who sleeps with her then dumps her. She becomes a stripper and meets her another cute, kinda dorky photographer named Jax who treats her kindly and allows her to live with him then kind of turns into a jerk to her too when he loses his eyesight thanks to the sea witch drugging his glass of water and taking his sight away. It makes sense for him to be irritable since he makes his living taking photographs and then suddenly out of nowhere he loses his sight. The stripper friend she makes at the strip club named Sky becomes upset with her after their manager keeps upstaging her with the The Little Mermaid since she's making better tips. She quits, takes advantage of Jax's blindness and has sex with him. The Little Mermaid sees them in bed, and the sea witch temporarily gives her her voice back and gives her a dagger that her mermaid sisters sold all their hair for her to have. She tells her that if she stabs Jax then she can go back to being a mermaid and return to the sea with her family. She was about to stab Jax, but decides against it and jumps off the balcony to her death and becomes a creature of the sky one day hoping to get a soul.

This movie is very dark and I admire it's bravery. Everyone wants to tell the happy version of the sea princess getting with her human prince and living happily ever after. Very few want to tell the truth version of the story where she sells her voice, doesn't get the guy, is given a chance to kill him and return to being a mermaid, but doesn't and kill herself instead. It's tragic but it's more poetic and realistic. Once you get pass the low budget feel of the movie and the sometimes cringeworthy dialogue, it's a great story which sucks because it's realistic. Cute guys turns out to be jerks who manipulate and use you. Sometimes nice guys let you down. Girls can be your friend one moment, then become jealous of you the next moment. Sometimes girlfriends will sleep with your man. And people who you thought you could count on turn their back on you when you're no longer of use to them. Some people use drugs, alcohol, escapism, work, and sex to deal with their disappointments in life. I think did the best with the budget he had, but despite all it's imperfections and the Rob Zombie white trashy feel it, it's still a compelling story shot beautifully sometimes with a nice score and great soundtrack.

I'm not going to lie. The first time I saw this. I cut it off and was thinking what in the world is this. I was thinking it was the 2018 version starring William Mosely who played Peter in The Chronicles of Narnia movies. The movie kept getting pushed back because of backlash from the Disney's Ariel fans who were uspet it wasn't Disney's version of it. So if this movie came out around the same time, I don't get how it escaped the scrutiny. Yet, I recently gave it a shot since I'm on a binge watching different adaptions of beloved fairytales. Yet, I was determined to give it a shot and once I got halfway, it was smooth sailing with a few bumps here and there and the ending made it a stronger movie. It's not the best, but it is a rawer interpretation of a beloved fairytale I think the even the author would have appreciated. All I say is Disney's Ariel was very lucky she was found by Prince Eric and his dog instead of some seedy men and been thrown into prositution. Both happened in those times and modern times. But overall, give it a shot. I can't guarantee you'll like it. It's definitely not for everyone.

Awful
SilverLexiGirl15 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Modernizing a fairytale must be done with class and beauty in order to keep the integrity of its original magic and charm. This retelling of The Little Mermaid was basically a story of "What would happen to the mermaid if she came out of the sea and found herself at a kegger in some trashy town full of vulgar alcoloholic men?" In a nut shell, that's what happens in this film. Her first night on land, she is pulled out of a pool by a drunken man who had just pissed on a tree. He tells her she's "smokin' hot". She then sleeps with an arrogant cad who tells her she looks like sh%t the next morning. She then gets a job at a strip club where men proceed to make icky comments to her about her body. Gross. Just about the worst re-imagining of any story I have ever seen. The person (a man, no doubt) who created this film was obviously just living out some twisted sexual fantasy about a lovely and sweet fairytale character. This film fits the porn genre and should have been made that way to begin with because that was its intention.

Some like it, some don't.
AmandaFerris8524 March 2017
First, I would like to say that just because you don't like a movie, doesn't mean that everyone else that did is affiliated with the movie in some way or paid. It just means we have different tastes. It's a bit childish to assume that anyone who has a different opinion than you must have been coerced in some way.

I watched this movie with a few of my friends. I had seen the trailers and follow the page on FB so I was well aware of what I was getting into. A low budget indie. I had shown one of the friends watching the first trailer they had and the other hadn't seen anything.

I personally loved the movie. The music was incredible, the acting was genuine (by most) and the movie felt raw to me. A realistic story for an unrealistic circumstance. Boys are mean and dumb, and girls can be catty and vindictive. She experienced all of these real relationships that we all experience every day, and a lot of movies don't have that. This wasn't a fairy tale type love-y dove-y movie. In parts it was, but it was more than that.

My other two friends were "meh" about the movie. So I understand how some people liked it. Filmmaking was lacking in some areas. But obviously from their credits on here, they're new filmmakers. I look forward to what comes next.

Avoid
Wobbles201130 March 2017
Absolutely awful, a complete waste of my time, bad acting, very low budget looking, couldn't be further from the original story. The only reason I watched this train wreck was because I thought it was the Disney remake but believe me it's the furthest thing from that. Wish to God I'd watched paint dry instead.

I don't know how to say this in one word, so vomit came out instead
stine-182085 April 2017
After thinking for a minute here's what I came up with... Confusing, irritating, bland, shallow, trying-too-hard to modernize, uncaptivating. Seriously the list does not stop. One of the most confusing aspects was the beginning. Have no clue how that tied in at all. There was zero chemistry between anyone, and I normally like Indie films, but this was painful.

I wish I could give this movie a -1. This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Does not make sense. At all. Cant believe I wasted my time watching it. I feel bad for whoever chooses this movie to watch thinking its going to be good, and finding out its complete garbage. Don't even bother watching.

Reminded me of a low budget porn... I didn't mind that it was low budget. I love "B" Movies. There was potential of a good story. Possibly poor directing, I have no idea. Five minutes in I was ready to change the movie. It was very boring...

Spoiler: this movie is garbage. Say what you want about artistic interpretation, but this film had me banging my head against the wall from the opening scene. The constant slow-motion shots only prolonged the agony of poor acting, terrible white-balance, and complete lack of realistic character action. However, this is a great film to force your friends to watch if you are made happy by the suffering of others.

Well Done Keeping Integrity of Book
annaboutin7 January 2017
I have read the Hans Christian Anderson version of this classic tale since I was a little girl. I have watched many remakes and I give this one props for telling the story the way it should be. The main characters have raw chemistry. The title soundtrack adds to the flow of the film and leaves the audience in memorization of the love story. The only critique I will say is on the editing between camera shots. There were a few parts of the film where it was noticeable and distracted from the acting. Overall it had cinematic value while keeping the story true to the book. The ending of the film was beautiful, though could have choose a more soft sounding song to end with. Worth the watch on Amazon Prime!

Just another opportunity to sexualise a childhood movie character
sagitarius-4047225 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Good: 1. Music selection 2. Camera work was shaky but I liked the shots and angles that were used 3. The dramatic reading when Ariel narrates her thoughts 4. Ariels character was OK but I still couldn't buy into the ending up in bed with that guy the second she comes out of the water to dancing like she's been a stripper her whole life 5. I was able to watch it until the end so it was not unbearable to watch just easy to critique.

Bad: 1. Seemed like a script written by Matt to live out a little fantasy, not a lot of depth to the characters..about as much as you would get from a soft core porn. 2. Overall the acting wasn't great by anyone but they are all amateur so understandable I guess, but the sea witch was like watching someone audition for a school play.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
cnycitylady4 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Little Mermaid, and independent and not widely known interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic and most beloved fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" is a powerful, faithful and tragic retelling of the story.

Our heroine wishes to be human and sells her voice to the sea witch, classic right? But here they show us in vivid, intimate and hurtful detail just how big a part human interaction plays in this tragedy. Petty jealousies and misunderstandings unwittingly send the two lovers into a downward spiral that ends only in suffering. The Sea Witch plays a wicked part, too.

This is a true fairy tale full of all of the love and heartbreak that turns a simple child's story into an epic of character, emotion and essence. 8/10

Doesn't deserve this much negativity
comicbooks00731 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I wanna start with, this movie was far from perfect. Far. But this much negativity isn't warranted. Also, it says based off of the ORIGINAL story by Hans Christian Andersen. Not based off the cartoon version by Disney. I got from the movie what I got from the original fairy tale. The OG fairy tales were dark and some of them (including The Little Mermaid) had sexual parts.

Was she a stripper in the original story? No. But the prince made her dance for him. So I can see the inspiration there.

SPOILER ALERT He sleeps with another woman (and marries her) in the original story. And they end the exact same. If you have a problem with this ending then I suggest not reading the OG story and stick to your kid friendly cartoon.

The acting by most of the actors was great I felt like. The main stripper girl and the guy at the beginning could've been better..... The sound was atrocious in some parts. Most of these people don't have many credits to their name (besides the sound guy surprisingly..............) so I think it was good all things considered. Would've rated a couple of stars lower had the negative reviews not been so drastically harsh.

Modern Take on an Old Classic
mytoesarecute19 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not for your children! I have read many different versions of the old classic. Most people think the original telling was the rewrite by Hans Christian Andersen, where in the end she dies and becomes a "daughter of the air". However in his original telling was a much darker end than life after death, as she was denied an immortal soul and became seafoam after refusing to kill her prince when he chooses to marry another. He later rewrote the ending.

Though this movie was far from the Disney classic, the plot had much more in common with the rewrite by Hans Christian Andersen himself than the cute Disney movie. Yes, it's modern, yes the witch caused her man to go blind-which never happened in the fairy tale...yet, it has happened in many other fairy tales, like Rapunzel. And though she was stripping, the mermaid actually did dance for the prince in the old story...despite every step feeling as though she was walking on broken glass.

The ending is tragic and yet beautiful, as are traditional fairy tales, which were meant to teach life lessons to young children, rather than send children into a cruel world expecting "happily ever afters".

It wasn't a horrible movie, but the ending had me bawling like a baby, as I had expected a happy ending rather than a traditional one. Any critics saying this movie was awful have probably grown up on Disney movies and never read a real fairy tale in their life.

LITTLE MERMAID is a great new adult take on a familiar fairy tale!
ryanbartongrimley29 November 2017
LITTLE MERMAID is a great new adult take on a familiar fairy tale! As another reviewer wrote, this is not pre-chewed Disney stuff for kids. This is gritty, real and dark, so it is definitely for adults. But I loved it. The story is creative in its re-telling, the cast is top-notch and I loved the look which kind of reminded me of Pusher or Bronson. If you're looking for the underbelly of the Disney story, this is it and it's really entertaining! BRAVO!
