Was expecting much more exciting, intriguing and informative film on the mystery man than this stylish attempt with quite less to offer in content.
bobbysing2 August 2016
If after watching a film you have all praises for its lead actor, art direction and background score, but are not willing to praise the film on the whole as any entertaining experience at all, then that's a clear failure for the makers, unable to make any kind of connection with the general viewers, which is unfortunately the case with the much awaited MAIN AUR CHARLES made on the real life stories of Charles Sobhraj, a conman/serial killer active towards the end of the last century.

Recalling the news bulletins/newspapers of those decades I personally remember Sobhraj's criminal deeds being read and discussed with the element of an 'entertaining awe' and most of the people imagining him as a charming, clever hero of some Hindi pulp fiction novel, forgetting all about the blood and murders associated with his big-name willingly. So following the same pattern, one expected the bio-pic of such a controversial-likable personality to be an equally exciting watch depicting 'the cat & mouse games' played with the Police in a truly entertaining manner making the best of the opportunity given.

However it was really sad to see the film turning out to be nothing but a mere stylized portrayal of Charles's happening life scoring much less on the content level disappointing many.

Giving the deserving credit to its visible merits, yes here we have Randeep Hoodatruly enacting the character with an impressive, mesmerizing elegance using a fine mix of language, make-up and dialogue-delivery creating a hypnotic kind of impact (just like the real life Charles), an intelligent re-creation of the gone era by the art-directors, a pulsating background score (though there is no innovation tried by the composers following the past hits) and a talented cast ensemble in the key roles making it an enjoyable film for the viewers just interested in the technical part of the creation ignoring everything else.

On the other hand, when you take into consideration its less engaging script progression, the 'more than required' artistic style of narration, not so clearly spoken dialogues having a foreign accent, the deliberated inserted skin-show, lackluster music (ruining another golden hit "Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo"), avoidable dumb characters as of Mandana Karimi and no detailed attention given on the 'How he did it all' part of the biography, MAIN AUR CHARLES seems to be a pretty confused product trying to cater the classes as well as the masses together following a jumbled vision of its director Parwaal Raman. As a result despite the honest efforts put in by Adil Hussain, Richa Chaddha and Vipin Kumar it doesn't reach out to the general viewers willing to see something exciting as well as entertaining made on the life of a negative but interesting French-Indian-Vietnamese personality of Charles Sobhraj.

Having said that, MAIN AUR CHARLES does hold you tight in its final 40 minutes showcasing the jail-break sequence and the link established with the opening scene of his murders committed in Thailand. Plus it has some exceptional strokes too played occasionally like focusing on the book 'Mein Kampf' in Sobhraj's personal collection, the old Black & White classic being played in the jail for the selected inmates and the warden referring to him as 'Sir'. Yet, one honestly misses the finer details and is forced to think that the potential subject and figure surely deserved a much better film from the makers materializing on the golden chance.

Moreover the film also couldn't give me answers for many significant questions in mind. Like what was his early childhood about, where did he learn his various arts of influencing/hypnotizing people, how he used to charge for his interviews and discuss copyrights of his personal life-content, did the 'Charles' in his name have anything to do with 'Charlie Chaplin' (as it is rumoured), what were his views about India in particular, what happened to him after the Indian chapter, where is he now and what's in his mind at the present after spending so many years in the jails of various countries? (The questions Google answers much better than the film!)

Anyway, where MAIN AUR CHARLES successfully manages to score on technical grounds, it fails to do the same in terms of 'connecting with the general audience' as desired. But you can still see it for the style quotient and Randeep Hooda in particular who simply nails it playing Charles Sobhraj Â…..unarguably.

Excels as Typical Bollywood Crime Genre Movie, Best Performance of the Year by Hooda
jasskTV30 October 2015
During the 1970s Charles Sobhraj committed at least 12 murders throughout Southeast Asia of tourists on the hippy trail. After spending 21 years in prison he was released in 1997 and retired comfortably as a celebrity in Paris, charging large sums of money for interviews and 15 million dollars for the rights to his life story for a movie. After he went to Nepal he was arrested by Nepal officials for the murders of 2 of his victims. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. . Main Aur Charles is a movie directed by .The notorious criminal played by Randeep Hooda. I went into the movie without knowing anything or any expectations. I purposefully didn't even watch the trailer of the movie before watching it.

Let me start with some nice things about the movie. There is a stranger but interesting humour depicted in the movie. Police is shown making hilarious ghoofups. There is also a custodial battle between the various state police to get the prize of catching shobraj

And the best part of the movie was that I forgot I was watching Randeep Hooda. He was hands down the best part of the movie. He was amazingly convincing as the protagonist. It reminded me of Jake Gylanhall's character In Night Cralwer. Richa Chaddha playing a law student & Adil Hussain playing Amod Kanth did a good job as supporting actors. The movie actually picks up pace in the second half and is worth the watch.

Now the bad part; As soon as the movie started my initials thoughts were that the movie was very confusing. We are introduced to the antagonist very quickly and little time is given to the develop the character. This was case for the entire first half. It felt very rushed to the point that it became even boring.

There is even a long 15 min sequence where people are talking about shobraj, we see newspaper clips etc. But it just helps in creating an Image and does nothing to help the viewer understand character. Throughout the movie, I felt the director was more interested in Creating the Image rather than dismantle the character.

The movie offers little to the audience with respect to any insight into Shobhraj's criminal mind. Why he does what he does. For a script to be strong we need to understand why a certain character it taking an action. The movie did not provide any clear answers.

The movie keeps narrating to us that Charles shobraj is hypnotic, brutal, intelligent and ruthless but it does not show what makes him as such. Many places where we could have expected an interesting dialogue, the scripts decides to take a shortcut, with saying annoying it gives us a distant shot of the characters talking and we are left to our own imagination.

The title of the movie suggests that its from the point of view of an officer who is chasing Charles. The film is weak in this area as well. We get no insights on the exact thought process that is motivating the police.

Making it more difficult was the fact that the movie didn't have any subtitles for any French or other languages used in the movie. Hindi movies don't go deep.. they are just surface.. didn't understand why Charles did what he did... hi psychology... it did not delve why he was charmer for women.... what is the psychology of women who fell for him...

I think the movie was afraid to admit that its about a serial killer. They added Bollywood masala to a real life horror story of brutality. The psychopathic mindset of this killer was not explored rather what we got a typical crime genre Bollywood movie. It wasn't a psychological portrait of Charles shobraj but a dumbed down version to make him look good on screen

Story of a singular man with some great performances
samyamondal1 November 2015
This film is a good portrayal of Charles Sobhraj's life and journey of crime & passion in India. The story unfolds in a non-linear pattern. We view it as pieces of memories of people, whom Charles has befriended. The plot starts from how he escaped from Thailand after murders and comes to India and starts conning people ,getting jailed and jail-break. This is the first quarter of film. The film shows his charisma, seductiveness, shrewdness along with his desire for evil. The screenplay is tight, without any unnecessary stretch. Then we find how his accomplices helps him for jail-break and what a master-planner he is.

The title is apt as the film is from the perspective of Amod Kant, police officer who pursues him.Their encounters are very intense.

Randeep Hooda as Charles, with his french-Vietnamese accent, charm, seduction is brilliant. Adil Hussain as the good, stern, moral police officer is perfect. Richa Chadda also plays a bold part with ease.

The cinematography is excellent. The sets sometimes lacked the look of 70s & 80s. Direction-4/5 Acting-4/5 Plot-3/5

The Charles Sobhraj story. Again. Worse than ever.
thaicoons12 January 2016
After a TV series or two and a documentary or two, the infamous Charles Sobhraj on the big screen. His story is certainly interesting and the TV series from the 1980s managed to translate his reported hypnotic charisma on the screen, as far as they could go in the 80's of course. And this is this movie's first problem, that when it tries to convey the atmosphere of the 1970's, it fails to do that but rather gives it the look of made-for-TV cinematography from the 80's. It's bad, really bad and poor acting doesn't help. I couldn't make it past the 30 minute mark. The director and the cameraman should go study modern Korean cinema to see how to pull off period atmosphere while still using modern cinematography technology and techniques.

Which brings me to a question; what is it with people from India and rating movies? Why do you keep giving Indian movies unrealistically high scores? With more reviewers they somewhat come down but it's still not realistic and there's no by nationality breakdown in the stats. You act as if it's somehow unpatriotic to give a movie from one's own country a bad score. It's not.

For those interested in Sobhraj I recommend Neville's book.

Totally impressed by Randeep and Director Prawaal. Such an intense cinematography and correct actors to perform their individual role. But Honestly, Randeep has raised his respect in my eyes even more after watching this Mature Acting in this one.

Great Performances, Decent Film!
namashi_111 February 2016
Based on the life of notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj, 'Main Aur Charles' is a richly acted biopic, about a notorious man. Even as a film, its decent, but not as sharp as one expects it to be.

'Main Aur Charles' is Inspired by true events and told from the perspective of respected Indian cop, Amod Kanth who handled the notorious case of serial killer, Charles Sobhraj.

'Main Aur Charles' aces as far the performances are concerned. Randeep Hooda is appropriately creepy as the serial killer, flaunting a french accent & alluring women with sheer effectiveness. Adil Hussain nails every bit of Amod Kanth, portraying the honest cop to the fullest. Richa Chadda is absolutely stunning as Mira, Charles's girlfriend, who, without any remorse, defends the criminal. Its an eerie performance, performed majestically.

On the flip-side, 'Main Aur Charles' is unevenly Written. Prawaal Raman's Screenplay begins on an excellent note & the series of events that follow, manage to arrest your attention aptly. Its the second-hour, that begins to fall. The pace drops & the drama in this hour, lacks the punch. Even the culmination, doesn't leave a big impact. Raman's Writing is great partly & ordinary otherwise. Raman's Direction, on the other-hand, oozes style. The Cinematography & The Editing, deserve a special mention.

On the whole, 'Main Aur Charles' stuns in parts, sadly, not entirely.

Eh, i know the story, and this is garbled
WVfilmfem24 December 2018
I don't understand all the high ratings of this mess. If you know the history of Charles, this is impossibly messed up! Seems to want to portray Charles as some sort of cult hero, rather than the cold blooded killer con man psychopath. The book Serpentine is most excellent, and highly recommended if you want to know the true history.

Main Aur Charles is dark, intellectual and brutal film with brilliant performances
ketgup8331 October 2015
Charles Sobhraj , nicknamed as "The Bikni Killer" and "The Serpant", is a French serial killer of Vietnamese and Indian origin, who preyed on Western tourists throughout Southeast Asia during the 1970s. The dark and intense thriller Main Aur Charles is a good attempt in recollecting the activities performed by Charles Sobhraj during his lifetime but falls little short of making it a perfect watch.

Based on the true story of criminal mastermind , Main Aur Charles gives a detailed description of his dark deeds told from the perspective of an Indian cop, Amod Kanth who looked into the case of serial killer.

From the director of critical acclaim films like Darna Marna Hain and 404:Error Not Found, Prawal Raman divulges into new territory of adapting a biography of a criminal using his knowledge of directing previous dark-thrillers and come up with intelligent, brutal and alluring plot. He defines each characters to tell their own version of Charles in the first half and uses the second half to present the main protagonist. The movie does not waste anytime with unnecessary song-dance routine and sticks to the main point which is the highlight of the film. Hats off to Raman for making it crispy and watchable film. The Tihar jail escape is well-executed. On the flip side, the screenplay sometimes looses the track and is unable to weave things around. Cinematography and art direction is excellent introducing to the 70's era with aplomb

Performance wise, you cannot think of anyone apart from Randeep Hooda playing the character of Charles Sobhraj. The actor perfectly gets into the character as it was tailor made for him. He adapts the charm and persona of Charles with ease. Richa Chadha is a delight to watch. Adil Hussain gives in a brilliant act as Indian cop, Amod Kanth.

Overall, Main Aur Charles is dark, intellectual and brutal film with brilliant performances. Good 3/5

Good Making
shreekara-19955 November 2015
Dark Crime Drama that narrates the cruel and dark side of crime world or crime personalities has always been the fascinating subject of many Bollywood filmmakers and when the plan of making the movie on extremely infamous hiked psychopath who is known by his notorious serial murders and presenting himself stylishly in the delusion of being a celebrity comes in focus then its sure to be made into movie, 2015 release '' Main Aur Charles'' is based on the most spoken criminal of 1970's Charles Shobraj, his life which is not less than any thrillers on screen when made into movie obviously strikes the height of curiosity among the viewers.

Randeep Hooda in the shoes of Charles presented himself very perfectly with all those quirky style and suiting accents provided full justice to the role, a good role for an actor to prove his acting brilliance, Adil Hussain as an Inspector Amodh Kanth convince the audience with his ideal performance, in the team that had more good artists like Richa Chadda, Tisca Chopra and many more rendered their good act on screen, the flow of the movie which has non linear mode with slow phase narrative pattern seems to be much sober, movie with its timely perfect background scores hits the absolute pulse of the viewers, Prawaal Raman an ambitious director with his good narrative skills showcased his high class directorial talent, overall ''Main Aur Charles'' is more like the stylish representation of 1970's most hiked criminal 'The Serpant'.

Prawaal Raman messes it up ....
PimpinAinttEasy9 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Prawaal Raman calls an urgent meeting with his editor Nipun Gupta:

Prawaal: I blew it. I messed it all up. You're the only person who can help me now.

Nipun: Oh dear. Is it what I think it is?

Prawaal: Yes. It is what you think it is. I was watching the rushes. There is nothing in there. The scenes are rubbish. The dialogs are trite. The performances are average at best. It is a disaster of epic proportions.

Nipun: Why should it always be me?

Prawaal: You're the only who can make this remotely watchable. You have worked in more than ten RGV productions.

Nipun: I thought I was done with this crap after Rakhta Charithra 2.

Prawaal: Just one last time, man. Just for old times sake.

Nipun: Alright. Tell me what you want me to do.

Prawaal: I'll hand over everything we've shot. And the background track as well.

Nipun: Oh no. I have heard enough crappy background scores for a lifetime, I edited so many of RGV's rubbish.

Prawaal: This one isn't too bad. Its like a poor man's version of the James Bond theme. You need to keep repeating it over and over. And we have a bit where we rip off Morricone's score for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly as well. The rest of the score is trippy tuneless rock n roll nonsense.

Nipun. I see.

Prawaal: The supporting cast wont receive much space. It should be about Charles living it up. You need to insert a lot of scenes with scantily clad white women in there. And I have this idea for a very complex structure that would impress a lot of film critics. And there needs to be lots of scenes with drinking and cigarette smoking.

Nipun: I thought this was a movie about a sinister serial killer.

Prawaal: Yes yes. But we are going to make this into a Bond movie. The serial killer bit would be in the background. We will broadcast the "evil is sexy" message yet again.

Nipun: Oh dear. But that's been done to death. And this guy is thought to be a psychopath or something.

Prawaal: Hollywood made Hannibal Lecter sexy. So why not us?

Nipun: So in short, there are no original ideas here.

Prawaal: Hmmm. Yeah. True. I blew it. I blew it so badly.

What a terrible effort!
devashishpatwardhan27 August 2023
This movie is so hard to understand! It feels like the entire movie is just a bunch of snippets that were put together by some kid. No scene is longer than 1 minute! It's so hard to keep track of who is who. No explanation nothing. Save your time. Don't watch this.

They've shown Charles to be a hero. There's no backstory, there's no build up before any scene, it is a very very very low budget, poorly executed movie.

I am not sure if the story of fully correct either. It feels like the Netflix series had so much more content and it was so well written and executed. This has very little content, each and every scene is just 10 - 10 second videos put together!

Main Aur Charles review
debmalya-dgp1 November 2015
Plot: 'Main Aur Charles' is a work of fiction inspired by true events. It captures the infamous Tihar(Delhi) jailbreak of 1986, and the prime accused in it,'Charles'(of French origin), is a man who's charming, hypnotic, manipulative and dangerous. Before being imprisoned in Delhi, Charles was the prime suspect in a couple of murders in Bangkok(Thailand), but managed to flee before the law caught up with him. Charles' targets comprise mainly tourists, backpackers and hippies. He's quite a ladies man. He befriends them, woos them, and then deceives them. No doubt, he's referred to as 'The Serpent' in newspapers. He knows 14 languages, and can use the brains of other people. The film narrates the sequence of events leading to his apprehension, his trial in Delhi, the jailbreak which he executed on purpose, his subsequent apprehension in Goa,and the investigation which follows. But more than that, the film gives viewers a peek into the mind of Charles and his mysterious personality where good and bad blend into a charming and mystique grey existence.

Cast: Randeep Hooda as 'Charles' gives a controlled and nuanced performance. Be it his look, his English-French accent, his evil charm, Randeep nails it. After watching the film you'll feel only he could've pulled off this role with so much ease and no one else. This is definitely one of his finest performances and he proves it yet again that he is one of Bollywood's most versatile actors. Richa Chadda as 'Meera' is marvelous. She plays a law student who falls for Charles. She looks really beautiful and carries off her role with elegance. Adil Hussain plays the cop 'Amod Kant' investigating the jailbreak case. He gives a power packed performance and his baritone will really scare you. Nandu Madhav plays the cop 'Sudhakar Zende' who apprehends Charles in Goa after he escapes from Tihar jail. He gives a superb performance. The rest of the cast comprising Alex O'Nell, Vipin Sharma, Tisca Chopra etc. deliver subtle performances.

Direction: Prawaal Raman of 'Darna Mana Hai', 'Gayab' and '404' fame does a splendid job. He's written the screenplay and dialogues as well. He's the real hero of the film.

The brilliant camera-work by Anuj Dhawan, and the crisp editing by Nipun Gupta give the film the edge. The music by Aditya Trivedi is unusual and edgy especially the 'Theme Of Charles' track, and the background score adds to the thriller element in the film. My personal favourites from the album are the tracks 'Jee Lo Yaaron', 'Ya Rabba' and 'Theme Of Charles'.

All in all, 'Main Aur Charles' is the coolest movie of 2015 so far, and must not be missed. The line told by Amod Kant towards the end of the film 'Jeet hamesha sachchai ki hoti hai, par buraai kabhi haarti nahin ' will stay with you after you've left the theatre.

My rating - 10/10

Fabulous Direction,Stylish Look and Great Performance
Tejas_jsr6 November 2015
Main Aur Charles is as intriguing and interesting/fascinating as the real life character Charles .A very well directed and superb performance by the actors.Randeep Hooda and Adil Hussain as Charkes and Cop Amod Kanth have played their role to perfection. Superb direction by Prawaal .The way he picked up certain aspects/traits of Charles and focused more on bringing out his personality came through really well. Meera Chadda as the Law student does a wonderful job and fits into the role perfectly The hippie culture of the70s and 80s is captured well by the director

A must watch to get a glimpse of the notorious ways of Charles Shobraj.

Overall a truly international movie

Only few can catch the pace!
maulin521 November 2015
A film based on the Bikini Killer, Charles Shobhraj. Directed by Prawaal Raman. Randeep Hooda plays the role of Charles. Film is very fast and super stylish in the first half. Almost everyone, even I also can't be able to find out what's going on. Because the pace is too high for the Indian audience like me. So, probably you may not be able to identify the smartness of Charles. The planning of escapism from Tihar Jail looks normal, even dumb in first half, but in climax, where the film shows the actual fact of the story, you will get mad for the planning of Charles. Definitely a stylish watch. But, only few can catch up what the director is trying to show. Randeep acted superbly. I don't like Richa in the film, don't know the reason. Adil Khan and Tisca Chopra are perfect. Background score is too good. Jab Chhaye Tera Jadu song is amazing, so as its singer Kanika Kapoor. Kudos to the director for giving a totally new vision. But, people are not ready yet, so better luck next time!

Out and Out Randeep
abhayphougat-443-9316307 November 2015
I would definitely recommend this movie. you cannot miss any screen time otherwise you would get lost. To squeeze the life of a person in 2 hours is not easy. the movie is fast paced with dates and locations and shuffles in past and present (movie time). Randeep is phenomenal in his screen presence and truly does justice to the character. He is quick witted. Like when he asks for his friend about what about his passport, his friend says will take time. (He has done a jail break already). He simply says "Passport office mai bheja hai kya". Lot of people didn't understand these simple punch lines and its riot laugh the way he makes these statements as if its normal. You have to keep yourself gelled to the screen as talking to friend or company will ruin the fun :). It would simply push Randeep in the category of sought after actors. The support role of meera(Rich chaddha) is also good , acting as a Delhi bimbo. The role of Delhi police chief (lost his real name) is also strong. A must watch, fast paced movie.

Superb Job - Loved Hoodda and admired Prawaal
saurabh-kaushik-in9 November 2015
After long time, I thoroughly enjoyed a Hindi movie.. Each plot was very intriguing with many of the subtleties left for brain to interpret. Movie is true drama style and slowly building plot by plot for for a thrilling and chilling end. On the side, I admired this mysterious personality of Charles (Hoodda) .. where Hoodda played close to perfection... Actress Chaddha also came out to be as sultry as she is. Goa scenes were truly captured in its true essences, reminded my 20 yrs back time. Director and his cinematography was superb. I would want other Indian movie makers to take clues from here to make more meaningful movie where you don't have to leave your brain at Home. To director, I want to see more of Charles in its sequel.. Mr. Prawaal.. Please do the favor for all of us...

This was the time when randeep was recognised by masses as someone coming out on top and he did but films are no sport where you either win or loose it's a roller coster , films are so tricky no matter the effort no matter the hardship there's always a chance of people not liking it, god bless all the artists in the world .
