Despite having two experienced script writers attached, the majority of the film was improvised on set by the director, producer and actors. The actors worked hard to incorporate a sometimes shifting narrative into key scenes, and while the overall arc of the story remained fixed, scenes and character beats would often change at the last minute as the actors made telling contributions to their character's journey.
The final scenes are shot in Skala on the Greek island of Kefalonia.
The film features statues by the artist Anthony Gormley.
