Realistic and educational reality show.
aaronboyd198720 November 2014
I've been an IMDb lurker for at least 10 years, and this is the first show that motivated me to make my first review.

It's a breath of fresh air to see a reality show that is actually smart and realistic. They show the bright and the dark side of being a veterinarian. Nothing is censored or held back... some animals are healed, and some pass. It's exciting, entertaining, educational, and hilarious at times. Dr.K makes some great innuendos that crack me up. I highly recommend this show, and hope that Nat Geo wild continues to air this show for years to come. Air this more frequently and renew this show for more seasons! :)

Talk to me baby
josgames-2349110 August 2022
But don't talk baby talk. Most of the staff do it and it drives me crazy. Why? I didn't even apeak to my own human babies this way. And I certainly have never spoken to my fur babies this way. Maybe it's the only way exotics understand. Rant over!

Awesome, Slightly Graphic.
asere_danesik16 November 2014
Watched one episode of this show and instantly loved it. I work in a vet clinic myself as reception and everyone's assistant and it was really cool to see some of the more exotic critters get treatment. The setup and equipment they have in this clinic is super advanced, the staff all seem really happy and nice, very caring, and they get to work with some wildlife too! I say anyone interested in veterinary medicine would enjoy this show. However, if you are uncomfortable with graphic material THIS SHOW IS NOT FOR YOU. They show all sorts of things including necropsies (autopsies of dead animals) and it can be too much for some viewers.

Great Show
bcjamaj13 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There have been several vet shows on TV, but this one is one of the more fun ones to watch because they do exotic animals not your basic domestic animals. One of the reviews points out the sad truth that there are people out there that should not be owners of these beautiful creatures, and some of these animals should never be pets in the first place. This is not the fault of a veterinarian. Sadly there will always be stupid and cruel people. Human hospitals still treat criminals, cruel, and stupid people. I don't see why veterinarians shouldn't treat animals owned by them? It's not the animals fault. I don't believe for one minute that if bad people didn't have a vet to go to that they would suddenly say OK, guess I won't get one.

I like the show. I like the Dr's. I think its very down to earth, entertaining, and educational. I think I have learned more on this show than any other vet show I have watched to date. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's sad. Just like real life.

Great show for everyone!
aplusnplus13 October 2019
It's called Exotic Animal ER for a reason: they treat exotic animals only. Any bad reviews you may see must be from people from another network. It's a wonderful upbeat show! I've seen every episode and I can't wait for Dr. T's new show..

Finally a realistic vet show on TV
rotpaw29 September 2019
As a registered vet tech I can tell you this show is what really happens in vet practices on a daily basis. To the people complaining about the vets saying they love the animals, we that have chosen this career can tell you the only reason we do it is for the love of the animals (it sure isn't for the money and most of the time not for the clients, as they can be downright horrific to deal with on some days). As far as showing too many animals dying...well that is the truth about veterinary medicine, we can't save them all, even with our best efforts.

I for one think this is hand down the best veterinary show on TV, they do things correctly (unlike many who have no idea what a sterile surgical field is or do assembly line surgeries). The doctors at this practice are empathetic, good diagnosticians, will search for answers they do not have, seek out specialists when needed and treat their clients (and staff well - not really sure where this person who stated Dr. K treats her staff badly got her info??).

I would work for Dr. K in a heartbeat!!! Can't wait for Dr. T. to get her own show.

Love 💘 it!
lorraineshome13 July 2019
Not only do I watch this show, but I re-watch every episode several times. It does not get old or boring. And yes the doctor's may exaggerate and say things to create drama such as, "They can die from that", in my opinion it just adds to the drama. I have learned more about animals and exotic pets in particular, because I watch this show. I love the Dr's and what they stand for. Thank you for making a reality show that makes a difference.

Great show but BAD TEMPER DR K!
ddmax-712747 March 2019
I absolutely love the show but it's almost distracting how Dr K is completely on edge 100% of the time, is rude to her staff and appears to be on the verge of a total meltdown pretty much all the time. It's becoming difficult to continue to watch the program because Dr K's temper tantrums are pathetic and hard to watch. Her emotional instability is blaringly obvious and bad for the program, bad for the animals, bad for her poor coworkers and bad for her own health. She seriously needs to get a grip and chill the hell out.

made my list
apixielife9 December 2023
I am very picky about shows. Any shows. Especially a rated 10 that says it all right there. I do watch Dr. Pol which has a great cast (minus one vet who clearly hates her job) but I tried another on netflix and that one seemed staged. Not helpful. On Dr. K's it is very evident that it is real and the other employees really enjoy working there. Like the tatted assistant ( so sorry i cannot recall his name) he is like the go to guy, really knows his stuff. All the vets are wonderful, all of them. I look forward to watching them now. Every time I learn something I go and tell my son lol...."did you know animals have a cardiologist or ophthalmologist" and then my son and I talk for an hour or more about it. Then its on to another show. I highly recommend this show. Its real, its kind and its just a joy for all. So thankful its on hulu as on utube you get hooked but only 3 episodes avail. When done right these shows are outstanding. Your teaching as well as doing the show so it matters truly the intention of the cast. Are they doing it for money? Are they staging every animal is urgent urgent or are they really doing it for the animals. So thumbs up, back pats, thank you for doing what you do.

Interesting but...
orinocowomble24 August 2021
When I first started watching I enjoyed seeing the animals. After a while though, Dr K's disdain for "vets who only treat...dogs and cats" started to grate. Her admiration for exotic pet owners seems to be based on how much money they are.prepared to spend in her practice. This was painfully obvious in the episode dealing with a marmoset. From the start of the episode, Kelleher speaks of the possibility of an agressive form of herpes. She repeatedly mentions that the marmoset is in pain, but decides it could be something else -- roll out the CT scans and other expensive tests. After three days (during which the animal continues to suffer), it becomes obvious that yes, this is the aggressive herpes she had mentioned three days earlier, so the animal must be euthanised. They also filmed and showed the owner's hysterical crying at the loss of her pet, which I found disgusting. Personal grief is private, or should be.

After a few more episodes in which exotic birds and reptiles died under anaesthesia, some of which were revived only to die a few hours later, I realised this show isn't for me. The giggly-girl babytalk of the vets and techs is seriously out of place when it's a constant in the back room, and the profit motive is a bit too obvious for comfort.

Almost every episode something dies
jastpeel-37-4836558 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In nearly every episode something dies spontaneously or is euthanized. The FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) has a better survival rate than this group and they were at the Waco seige where over 80 people died. How about more survival success stories.

Too Much
kczark-340614 November 2018
Both female doctors go on and on about how much the owner loves this animal sooo much and they just can't let it die. The younger one squeals like an immature 15 year old. I watch all the other vet shows and they act like normal vets. I gave up on this one

Dying Sick Animals that BELONG in the WILD or NATURAL HABITAT
zenozz30 April 2017
I have watched this show all seasons but I no longer can support it or watch it. No "spoiler" here you will see the same deaths over and over just different animals and cruel owners.

THIS IS SICK SICK! If you are truly an animal lover you will eventually realize how SICK it is to watch these poor creatures suffer for the ego of their owners. I woke up after watching a few seasons.

Saying you "don't condone these poor exotic animals being held in captivity, so you treat them to enhance the quality of their life" is just a load of crap.

You are supporting this sick, twisted abuse of animals.

I can't morally watch this anymore. Seeing baby pigs euthanized because they were taken away from their mother too early. Watching a breeder bring in a monkey without a name but number and seeing it chopped up trying to save a profitable baby. Or watching another baby owl monkey come in with hair wrapped around its thumb, As it grabs the vets hair and I see the monkey pull a "string of the vets hair" as she questions how this is happening...

Or worse the poor African cat with fur balls just slowly dying....

I have come to the point where I can't watch this abuse.

Leave these animals in the wild where they belong and put your energy into conserving them instead. This is how you care and love these beautiful creatures who deserve so much more than a cruel painful existence held in captivity for years slowly dying where they never belonged in the first place.

BY WATCHING THIS SHOW I SUDDENLY REALIZE I AM SUPPORTING THIS HORRIFIC CYCLE OF SLOW DEATH.

I understand you can't save EVERY patient but COME ON.
foresakentae15 November 2022
I watched a bunch of Veterinarian shows with some of the people I support, specifically Dr. K and Dr. Pol.

I don't necessarily share the same issues others have with the "baby-talking" which is done with the animals, because I do similar things with my pets lol BUT I do have an issue with the ALARMING number of pets that seem to be fine and well coming in and then DIE in the care of the vets here. I fully understand some animals won't come out once put under..but it seems as if every episode around half of the animals I'm seeing go in do not come out alive. I have begun to even just TELL which pets will die just by the earlier interactions with the owner and vets. I wouldn't care but the pets seem to be fine then they find a million things wrong with it, go into surgery, surgery goes fine, then the animal just taps out. Now, I could be very wrong but I just had a very...odd gut feeling with this show.

And I'm also weary because of the statement the Dr that left said on top of Dr. Pol and his son claiming the producers were upset they wouldn't cause issues with eachother and/or animals to make it more "interesting" or "dramatic"
