A Serious Discovery
Hitchcoc28 October 2016
This episode starts with a traffic stop. A man in a van tries to pick up a young guy on the street. The guy refuses to go with him. Soon after, two patrolmen see the van and think it suspicious. When they pull the van over and subdue the driver, they find a body in the back. They also find paraphernalia that indicate how he was probably asphyxiated. This takes us next to Harry and his partner continuing to investigate the death of the young boy on the hillside. They find that a registered sex offender lives nearby. They talk to him but don't have enough evidence to do anything. Bosch goes to the scene of an arrest and finds that the pretty young officer he met earlier has fired her weapon at a suspect. He ends up starting a relationship with her. The case gets really interesting when the aforementioned van driver delivers a blockbuster confession. Also, the episode concludes with a startling event.

Good episode with fairly intriguing aspects to the main investigation

LAPD officers stop a motorist to make a grim discovery.

The best scenes of this chapter involve the arrest of one individual and the continuation of the investigation that began in the first episode. Although it is unfolding slowly I still want to find out what happens next.

It takes time when you start watching a show to connect with characters so certain scenes, such as romantic interludes are not very interesting. There are also more very unsubtle exposition drops in dialogue exchanges that are slightly jarring.

The courtroom scenes are reasonably good, but knowing there are 7 series of Bosch it is difficult to get to invested in whether anything bad will happen to the main protagonist this early. I think it's main purpose feels like giving backstory for Bosch and moments of antagonism.

Chapter Two: Lost Light
Prismark1025 July 2022
The second episode brings Bosch ongoing investigation into the abused dead boy in collision with Raynard Waits (Jason Gedrick.)

Waits was stopped by the police as he looked suspicious and they found a dead body in his van. He claims to know more about the killing.

Meanwhile Bosch still has to deal with the civil court case against him.

The episode works with the little character moments with Bosch. As he talks about faith with Dr Golliher, why he joined back up with the army after 9/11.

It tells a lot about him as a character. The addition of Waits adds another dynamic but his scuzzy character was far from convincing in this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
This series is going off the rails fairly quickly with the lead character, Bosch, jumping into the sack with another cop.

Gee whiz folks, we just can't have a protagonist police officer today without him or her attempting to have carnal relations with another member of the police force.

Why do scriptwriters do this garbage? Why do they have implant all the usual cliches into their series?

Oh, I know the answer. They don't think that women will watch the series unless there's the prerequisite female police officers doing the down and dirty with another cop.

What this does for the series is bring it down to soap opera level.
