WOW -- have not seen the "Kung Fu" formula in 40 years
A_Different_Drummer23 September 2015
Let me be clear, in case a fan misunderstands this review and starts monkey-hammering the NOT USEFUL key: I like this series, I respect this series, I watch this series, I review this series, I enjoy this series.

However, that said, it is clear to me that TEAM W. has gone so far off the reservation with this arc that they have been forced to resurrect the old Kung Fu formula from the 1970s.

For those under 60, the US series Kung Fu with the late David Carradine needed a way to blend mystical and spiritual and metaphysical concepts in a manner that the modern viewer would not find boring. So at least once an episode, Kwai Chang, the wanderer-priest in the US west, had to beat the ^&%&*& out of someone.

And the formula worked. It worked then. It works now.

Just when you are convinced that TEAM W. has taken this metaphysical exercise in Quantum ("we are one") Mechanics too far, you get a really good UFC cage fight.

I am not complaining. I am a reviewer. I am just doing my job.

Warning: Spoilers
It really disappoints me how a great concept could be thrown down the drain by too much focus on the wrong things. Character development isn't the Wachowskis' strength but a wild sci-fi plot is. They should have stuck with what they do best instead of wasting so much time on soppy scenes. This is the penultimate episode, but it does not feel like it because at the same time as there's a mysterious threat to humanity Kala is STILL struggling with her emotions towards her fiancé. I can't believe the season is almost over and this should-i- or-shouldn't-i-marry-him storyline is being dragged out over 12 episodes. When you establish such threats as a shadowy organisation that wants sensates dead, it's frustrating to then spend so much time on plots that are small fry compared to what's at stake. It doesn't help that scenes showing characters in life- threatening situations, such as Capheus in this episode, are constantly intercut with slow, "philosophical" scenes like Kala's. All that does is break up the tension of the exciting scenes.

But even the action scenes are getting old now the pattern is becoming obvious. Every time, a character gets put in a situation where he or she is outnumbered by powerful enemies, things look desperate, and then he or she gets help from other sensates to fight back and escape. In this case, it happens with Capheus.

The tragic thing is there's some good stuff hiding amongst all that monotony. Finding out that Jonas is actually manipulating Will and Nomi to play into the hands of Whispers, for example.

I hope the season finale can deliver something great but I'm losing hope.
