A Horrifying Display on the Nature of Evil
jmansmannstjohnslrev27 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I think it is a matter of human nature to reject stories like this. When faced with bone chilling evil, with actions so cruel they defy human expectation, you want to turn away, you want to shy away from it. There is a reason why antagonists are often portrayed as cartoonish, over-the-top, caricatures. I can see why some people would watch an episode like this and never want to watch another one again.

But what makes the Outlander series one of the best I have watched, and what makes Sam, Tobias and Caitriona's performance so memorable is the ability to bring characters to life, to display such a depth of human emotion that normal people don't see in real life. What you see in this episode, and earlier in Garrison Commander is the true nature of evil in the form of Jack Randall. He's not over-the-top, he's not a caricature; every move he makes is rational, calculated, and reasonable. His speech and mannerisms are completely controlled. He's not what we normally see in a disgusting villain. He's not crazy, he knows exactly who he is, he knows exactly what he's doing, but he doesn't care. You see a monster who has truly embraced the darkness, who is obsessed with a single vile goal, and that what makes it such a masterpiece. Most other programs shy away from this. Outlander leans into it, and forces you to come to terms with evil like this.

And what truly makes the episode harder to watch, (as if it wasn't hard enough to watch) are the performances of Sam and Cait, who have done such an incredible job providing emotional depth to these characters. At this point in the series, you know who these people are, you know what makes them tick, their fears, their desires, their passions. Which is why it is so harrowing to see them overcome by Randall. The episode hurts so much because it's not supposed to happen this way. Good is supposed to overcome evil, and both Sam and Cait display such a wide range of emotions in this episode. It's amazing the range of their talent, how in a single scene, their characters can show anger, resolve, and terror at the same time. It's heartbreaking when Jaime and Claire's resolve begins to break, when Claire's defiance turns to pure agony over her husband's torture, when Jamie's resolve turns to pure terror as Randall begins to assault him.

It's a truly terrifying episode, a sickening reminder of the sinister nature of evil. What makes this episode so gutwrenching for me is not the violence, or the gore, or the disgusting acts of sexual violence that you know are coming, its that everything that has been a strength for the heroes to this point, everything that makes us want these characters to succeed is twisted into weakness. Everything that has made the heroes so compelling is weaponized by Randall. Claire's devotion to save her husband, her resourcefulness and fearlessness that makes her such a powerful character results in her falling into Randall's grasp. Jaime devotion to Claire, his loyalty and willingness to keep her safe acts as the catalyst for Randall overcoming his will.

It's horrifying to think that the best qualities of yourself can be used against you by people that want to do you harm. The showrunners deserve praise for having the courage to tell such a story, as disgusting and brutal as it is.

As a Book Reader Outlander finally exceeded my expectations
mcampbelljh116 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
They really out did themselves with episode 115. The acting was superb by all seriously Tobias, Sam, Caitriona, Duncan, Stephan, Grant, Finn, Douglas & Brian all at their best. Sam and Tobias should be nominated as best male actor, and male supporting actor respectively for their performances in this episode and Caitriona for best female actress in a TV series in the next Emmy awards.

I don't know who wrote this script but whoever wrote this script also did an excellent job with the adaptation from the book and the directing by Anna Foerster was the best to date. I'd also nominate both of them for best adaptation and director for this episode. They totally exceeded my expectation so much so I didn't even miss the wolves (that is hard to do as a book reader my expectation are very high). So this is a great compliment to the caste and crew.

This episode it was excellent. Jamie waiting to be hanged, his initial pride and rejection of Black Jack advances, his fighting off BJR and killing his accomplice, then his ultimate capitulation to BJR save Claire's life. Sam Heughan acting was perfect. He actually becomes the Jamie of the book. The torture of Jamie was hard to watch had to look away when BJR nailed Jamie's hand to the table. But it was so well done, the acting the directing. Sam Heughan and Tobias Mendez were at their best here, tough scenes to make real and they made it real for me. Tobias plays BJR to a tee, I can't imagine a better BJR. His ability to go dark and sadistic makes you wonder is that acting or a part of him that stays dormant until needed. And what can I say about Caitriona, she is such an amazing actress from no where to A-list actress overnight. In this whole series she has totally amazed me with her ability to carry any scene she's given. A totally amazing actress and a great choice for our Claire.

My only concern (which has nothing to do with this episode) is that they made the same mistake they did in the 1st half of season one. Wasting time on earlier episodes (some of which were boring like the Search) leaving too many important parts to be covered in the final episode. I suspect we will continue to see Jamie's rape & torture in the next episode and then they will have to cut scenes from the rescue and recovery at the Abbey each of which should have been episodes on their own. They are being hurt by their initial decision to run only 8 episodes instead of a more realistic number like 10. I'm sure the last episode will be either too crammed or too much cut from the most important parts of the book to accommodate the lesser aspects that should have been cut from the start if they wanted to fit it into 8 sessions.

I hope they learn from season one and make season 2 even better! Starz take note and up their funding so they can do 10 episodes instead of 8. Really Starz is becoming my favorite pay channel on TV.

It's Not Black Jack, but Claire and Jamie's love that makes Wentworth great.
brizosdream16 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 115 about Wentworth prison is very well done. Best adaptation of the books I've seen to date, I especially want to give praise to Ira Steven Behr who did this screen adaptation, and Anna Foerster who directed it. Anna always seems to get the best performances out of the actors in Outlander. As a women she knows what draws the millions of women who tune in each week. I see the production team trying to say it's because "Black Jack is Back" but it's not Black Jack that draws millions of us to Outlander or this episode. It 's the love between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and what that love inspires.

Claire is a woman who is willing to risk it all for the man she loves, whether that be forgoing the luxuries of a modern life or battling evil antagonists like Black Jack, along with the lengths Jamie is willing go for his love of her. Jamie's willingness to sacrifice his body and soul to save Claire is what I loved about this episode. Their love/adventure story is the magic that this show has, not a torture rape scenes by Black Jack that's so typical of what you see in Game of Thrones or other on screen violent shows. In Outlander that torture is grounded in the story of sacrifices made for love. That is what make it good and unique.

Caitriona Balfe's and Sam Heughan acting and chemistry on screen is what makes this show real for me and millions of others. Sam acting ability has allowed him to become the book version of Jamie Fraser (all his strength and tenderness together in one man). Sam never disappoints the viewers. His acting and facial expressions takes you with him in every scene whether it's Jamie looking longingly at Claire or him battling the evil Black Jack or Dougal. Caitriona couldn't be more perfect as Claire. Her subtle strength and intelligence shows through in each scene too. Caitriona is the most beautiful and sexy woman on TV today. Caitriona's facial glazes when she looks at Jamie are to die for. Their chemistry is on screen magic. I can't get enough of them.

A support role like Black Jack Randal (Tobias Mendez) is needed in the story line as an antagonist to show you the depths Claire and Jamie are willing to go for each other. A better antagonist I could not imagine; Tobias ability to play the dark, sick side is amazing too. As a supporting character in this drama he fits the bill perfect, however, it's Jamie and Claire's character that I tune in to see each week. So whether it'll be Black Jack, Dougal, Gellis or Steven Bonnet later on if we ever get to those books, the story does need a good antagonist to give Claire and Jamie something to fight against together. Diana Gabaldon knew that when she wrote the 8 books. She gave us a lot of antagonists, but she also knew it was Jamie and Claire love relationship that drive this story forward; Never forget that!

I'm just so glad they cast 2 main characters Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan and a great supporting cast like Tobias Mendez, Graham McTavish, Lotte Verbeek that have the acting ability to can carry this TV version on hopefully to the last book. Sam and Cait couldn't be more perfect together.

As for the Wentworth scenes the acting was excellent. Jamie and Taran (Douglas Henshall) waiting to get hanged with that look of defiance and despair; Claire and Murtagh's rescue attempts with the boys; Jamie and Claire's touching scenes of finding him and then loosing to Black Jack. Black Jacks evil as he tortures Jamie, and Jamie stoicism as he resist and finally sacrifices all to save Claire. All well acted by everyone involved.

Why the haters?
mkfwilliams196730 August 2020
First off, I've never read the books. But my best friend has and knows them backwards and forwards so I trust her. This was pretty much by the book. Brutal? Definitely. Hard to watch? Certainly. But going according to the story line in the books? Also, yes. And so I guess I'm confused by all those saying they won't watch anymore because of this episode. It's part of the story so...

Amazingly good TV series!
tinyone218 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love this series. There is loads of romance and action. And also very funny and endearing parts.

The torments endured by the main characters are cruel, and are done in such a way that you feel part of the story. It's unpredictable and like nothing seen elsewhere before (that I know of). One feels the anguish and agony. However, there are also times when you are part of the pleasure, laughter and fun and you can giggle with the characters as they make jokes.

I have read most of the books after seeing the first 10 or so episodes of the first series. It is an amazing likeness of the books. My only hope is that they don't follow the books through in the next series as the books become laborious but more so move away from the romance and story of Jamie and Claire. In my mind they are the heart and soul of the TV series and moving in the same direction as the books will be heartbreaking indeed.

One of the greatest episodes in TV history.
baqirtalpur11 November 2018
I rarely write reviews but when i do it means i absolutely loved something. This is one of those episodes. If you're a game of thrones, this is what battle of bastards is for GOT. Absolutely amaIng acting by all lead actors. Script is top notch and direction like nail in the wall (you'd know what i mean when you watch the the episode.). Apart from the most sadistic character - jack randal's creepy but beautiful acting what sets this episode apart is the love of claire and jamie.

Like the Show, Hate the Episode
joncheskin5 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great tv series, but I am sad to say that this episode is virtually unwatchable, containing scenes of sadism, torture and sodomy and are graphic beyond belief. It is just too much. I guess if you have a strong stomach, you can find some drama in this but it is mostly a nightmare. I also think actually that Jack Randall's character is basically just boring. Yes he is a psychopath, we get the point. Let's get back to the love story and the cross-cultural drama.

One of the worst episodes ever
kaankonmaz11 June 2020
I am totally okay with some violence and sex scenes but this series has became a sadist sodomizer gore porn movie. There can be way better ways to tell the story and the drama than just showing sick scenes again and again. I don't think I will watch any other episode of this series again, it is a great example of ruining a great topic and story.

If you love Claire & Jamie - turn off the TV now coz you're about to be hammered & sodomized!
KDB42723 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Jamie is raped in this episode by the replusive Black Jack Randall & it is the most disgusting thing I've ever been subjected to in any series - ever. After watching these last episodes (& most of it was fast forwarded) I think I may have developed PTSD. I was unable to sleep & I had to take the next day off work because I was so sick & found myself randomly crying throughout the day. Why the author of this beautiful love story would have to put such vile & evil scenes into their writing is diabolical. Sadly these last 2 episodes were too much for me & I can't continue with the series :-(.
