Saves Some Characters.
Jdmaxgaming4 December 2014
This episode really did save Cisco and Caitlin's back story. The past two episodes, they were very underdeveloped, as well as a few others like Joe. But this episode took time to talk about there back story's and explore them a little deeper, which was satisfying to watch. However, the show doesn't improve from last weeks episode at all. The new villain "The Mist" felt watered down and just disposable. The humor and quirky-ness remains witch makes it all worth while for me. I really am enjoying this show, I actually enjoy it more than most shows on TV today. It's funny, it's action packed and the characters are just great. Is it a step up from last weeks episode? No. Does that make it bad? Absolutely not, this episode is still great and fun to watch just like last time was! I can't wait to see where the story is heading, so here's to The Flash! - Jdmax

This Show Won't Slow Down
SpoodermanDerp22 October 2014
"Things You Can't Outrun" is yet again a good episode from the Flash. It was entertaining to watch and executed the narrative in a special way.

Although a problem for the series starts to arise as more episodes begin to develop. The plot is lighthearted and overall fun to watch, however it seems to be the same thing over again but handled and executed differently with a new villain, new moral lesson, etc. In this case, I have to say it was handled well enough in the episode to earn my compliment and I hope it resumes for the following episodes and may it not lose it's quality. The episode explored on the character/s whom I've stared to gain interest on the past few episodes, Caitlin and Cisco. I believed that they were underdeveloped when the last few episodes aired and I am glad that this episode saved them. Caitlin's story being her fiancé dying on the accident that night was diligently told using flashbacks. Grant Gustin as the Flash/Barry Allen together with Jesse Martin as Detective Joe West both gave stellar performances and were one of the highlights of the episode. Detective Joe as a father figure to Barry and Iris was well thought and added to the humor and lighthearted scenes. The villain "The Mist" was perhaps mediocre but still enjoyable for the most part. The visuals that assisted the Mist in his show of superpowers is clearly the standout. The green clouds flying through the skies and heading towards the Flash were incredible and proves that the visuals are one of the highlights of the whole show so far. The climactic scenes in the episode were thrilling and nearly took me to the edge of my seat at certain times. As for the mystery surrounding Harrison Wells, much is needed to be revealed. Certain clues are hinted and foreshadowing are shown. However this trend of showing him at the end will easily become repetitive if shown at every episode.

Overall it was a good episode. If you are feeling down or feeling happy or whatever mood you are in, you will definitely like this episode. +With more development given for characters like Caitlin and Cisco, +The Flash/Barry Allen and Detective Joe together giving great performances, +Visuals becoming a highlight of the show, +thrilling climactic and action scenes, -A possible downfall and loss of quality of the show.

Verdict: 8.5/10

Its strength remains its humanity
Fluke_Skywalker30 March 2016
There are echoes of early Smallville with the "freak of the week" formula (likely an unavoidable trope at this stage), but at least this episode addresses a key concern I had; What do we do with these villains? You can't put them in a conventional prison, and you can't just kill them all. This week's freak is a bit weak (rhyme time!) and underdeveloped, and I'm starting to wonder why all of these metahumans (save for Barry) are evil so far, though I concede it could be part of Dr. Wells' elaborate (and to me at least, as someone not familiar with Flash canon) mysterious plan.

But the strength of the show remains the very human relationships between the characters. None of the pseudoscientific mumbo jumbo means anything unless we care about the people who inhabit this universe, and here I do. I particularly like the use of flashbacks to flesh out the various backstories, and so far at least, it's all tied in nicely with the story at hand.

I would like to eventually see The Flash develop a rogue's gallery. See some sort of larger threat. But for now, that mastermind remains hiding in plain sight. But as long as they continue to find the heart beating beneath the costume, I'm game.

Just Keep Running
ThomasDrufke21 October 2014
I think Flash has found it's identity. It's going to be a lighthearted show, for the most part, with sprinkled in dark and shocking elements much like Arrow. This episode was probably the weakest yet, which considering two stellar episodes, isn't a big deal. I think it had some great moments and very good character interaction which had been missing from the first few episodes.

With the exception of the death of Barry's mother, the show has lacked emotional depth. But even Cisco and Caitlyn had some emotional balance to their characters this week. Detective West is becoming the best part of the entire series. It's funny how both cops in Arrow and The Flash give us some of our favorite scenes. While I still believe the cast of The Flash needs some improving, they have already grown into their characters more each week.

I thought the villain, though typically underdeveloped, was the best the show has had so far, and I'm glad they didn't kill him off and began the prison beneath Star Labs. It brings another interesting aspect to the show. But I still believe this show lacks the reoccurring story arc. I know we get a little tease into who exactly Wells is every week, but I'm almost ready for Reverse Flash to appear. I just want to be wowed. It was also nice to see the relationship between Barry and Caitlyn for once (without Cisco). There's a hint at romance which is all we need right now.

So even though the episode as a whole wasn't as exciting as the first two, it's still a strong showing for the fastest man alive. A little tweaks and it could be on Arrows level.

+Strong character driven material

+Cisco & Caitlyn showed different sides

+Detective West continues to steal the show

+Villain's are improving

-Almost tired of the Well's endings already

-Where's the underlining story arc

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: Things You Can't Outrun
lbramson10 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Barry fights a villain made of gas named the Mist after he fails to save an innocent woman. This episode is pretty much everything the previous did but done way better. Everything from the action to the villain to the themes are far superior in Episode 3. The character dinamics are at their peak here! Once again "Things You Can't Outrun" keeps the flow of Season 1 move quickly! Furthermore, the nostalgia is extremely strong with episode in particular! Not the best episode, but the individual moments truly shine and make it a pretty good episode and a solid 7.8/10, so far this show hasn't stopped speeding up!

Iris talking about how she has trouble dating

Warning: Spoilers
I just love how Iris basically says 'since i've basically been dating you without knowing it, before the explosion, i'm having trouble with my relationship with Eddie' to Barry while talking about the problems she's been having with Eddie.
