Miss Fritter (voice of Lea DeLaria) loves the smash-and-crash life of demolition derby. A local legend at the Thunder Hollow Speedway, Fritter’s formidable school-bus size is intimidating, but it’s her smoke stacks of doom, razor-sharp stop sign and crazy collection of her victims’ license plates that usually steers her opponents in the other direction. ©2017 Disney•Pixar. The summer animation season is in full swing. Early trailers for Inside Out had gotten me curious, but, I’ll admit, the draw was mostly in the strength of Pixar as a name. The concept seemed cute enough but I wanted to see how they were going to get a story out of the idea. The studio has created characters that reasonate with human audiences out of some of the most unlikely subjects, from a cute little desk lamp to fish. Why not personify emotions and make them the next thing to capture our hearts.
As with previous features, an animated short kicks off the big screen spectacle. This year, it’s about a lonely volcano singing his hopes to the sky. The entire thing is set to a gentle ukulele song performed by Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Greig. I don’t think I’ve ever felt emotionally connected to an island before,...

While Pixar has long been known for their imaginative and exciting feature-length films, they’ve also been known to release short films that are often just as original as their features.
Lava is one such short film, playing before this month’s emotive Inside Out. Lava is a story told through song, recounting the myth-like fate of a lonely Hawaiian volcano. Voiced by Hawaiian Kuana Torres Kahele, whose ukulele version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow put him on the map, the lonely volcano watches over millions of years as seemingly every other life form finds love. Just when it is about to sink into the sea, its luck finally changes.
Also featuring the voice talent of Napua Greig, Lava is a beautiful entry into the world of Pixar shorts. Naturally, it shows off the kind of vivid and original animation that Pixar has made its signature. We spoke with director...

Disney•Pixar’s Inside Out features an original score that captures the emotional spirit of the story by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino.
The soundtrack will be released by Walt Disney Records on June 16, 2015. Directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter and produced by Jonas Rivera, Disney•Pixar’s Inside Out opens in U.S. theaters on June 19, 2015.
Giacchino worked with director Pete Docter on Up (garnering an Academy Award® for best original score) and also counts Disney•Pixar’s films “Cars 2,” “Ratatouille” and “The Incredibles” among his credits.
But, says the composer, “Inside Out” was different. “Pete [Docter] wanted the music to feel as if it was coming from the inside—from internal thoughts,” says Giacchino. “We were going for something atmospheric. Something that wasn’t traditional film score.”
According to the composer, the goal of the music mirrored the goal of the film. “It had to feel emotional,” says Giacchino.

When you see “Inside Out” in the theater this summer, the short film in front of it will be called “Lava,” and it is a labor of love for writer/director James Ford Murphy. If you want to know about the film itself, you should check out my reaction piece from the event, which I'll post on Wednesday, but before I left the Pixar campus, I sat down with Murphy to talk about his film, the inspiration behind it, and the odd effect it had on the animators who worked on it. When I walked into the room, he looked at my shirt, which read “Cassius Clay,” and immediately remarked on it. We talked about boxing and Ali specifically for a few before the publicist asked us to start. It put us in a great mood as the conversation opened. Below is a short clip from Pixar’s upcoming short Lava; the short itself is 10-minutes long, so we have a 38-second clip for you to watch. It’s looks beautiful and charming like all Pixar shorts; it will no doubt to finally see it next year when it plays in front of Inside Out in theaters starting June 19, 2015.
The short directed by James Ford Murphy is a “musical love story” that revolves around two anthropomorphic volcanoes, and now you can hear one of those volcanoes (named Uku) sing.

Disney Pixar has revealed a first clip from Lava.
The video shows Uku - the lead character from director James Ford Murphy's short - engaged in a lonely song.
The living volcano's face was made from a compilation of the film's voice actor/singer Kuana Torres Kahele, Honeymooners star Jackie Gleeson and the bulldog in Chuck Jones's animated classic Feed the Kitty.
"We struggled with it a lot," Murphy told Yahoo. "But I feel like, once we were able to embrace the limitations of it, it unlocked all sorts of possibilities.
"I love that about animation: You can really make a mountain come alive. You can't do that in another medium."
The seven-minute short Lava will screen ahead of Pixar's feature Inside Out in summer 2015.

Back in June, I had the pleasure of attending a special Pixar presentation in Los Angeles largely geared towards giving members of the press an early look at the upcoming feature film Inside Out... but that wasn't the only title on display that day. We were also the first audience outside of the animation company to watch Lava, the studio's newest short. Sadly, it will still be a long time before the project will be arriving in theaters, but the good news is that today we have a very special first look. The clip does a pretty great job setting up the basic premise of what to expect from Lava. Written and directed by James Ford Murphy, Pixar's head of animation, the short is basically a music video that tells the story of a Hawaiian volcano named Uku and his desire to find someone else to share his life with.

Disney has released two stills from the short that will be paired with Big Hero 6, called “Feast.” It follows a man’s love life as seen throughout the eyes of his dog, Winston. That is a really fun concept, and the dog is adorable.
Disney/Pixar have also released a clip from their upcoming short “Lava,” which will screen in front of Inside Out starting June 19, 2015. The short, in which a volcano sings about his longing for love, was directed by James Ford Murphy. A couple of months ago, director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera brought some footage from Pixar’s next film Inside Out to premiere in Los Angeles. Also included in the presentation was a full look at Lava, the short that will screen before the movie, introduced by director Jim Murphy. The first look at a scene from the short is online over at Yahoo. While we’re loath to say too much about the plot (we’d rather that you experience the whole thing for yourself and let the charm wash over you), Lava focuses on Uku, a lonely, three-mile-wide Hawaiian volcano. Yes, you read that right: the romantic lead in the film is a lava-spewing natural formation. Above is your first official look at Riley, the main character in Pixar's upcoming 2015 release Inside Out. The film centers on the 11-year-old, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco and in this picture we'll be taken inside this little girl's mind where we'll find five key characters in her emotional "Headquarters" -- Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Fear (voiced by Bill Hader), Anger (voiced by Lewis Black), Disgust (voiced by Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith) -- all of which are featured directly below. This first look comes via Disney's Anywhere app where director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera take us through the film's production. In addition to this, premiering in front of Inside Out will be a new Pixar short film Lava, the love story between two rather unique characters, those being a pair of volcanoes named Uku and Lele.

Pixar has released an image of one of the characters in their upcoming animated short Lava, which is a love story about two volcanos named Uku and Lele. The volcano you see above is the main character of the story, Uku. When talking about the character with the La Times, director Jim Murphy said:
"I wanted to make Uku appealing and likable but also look like he’s been carved out of lava flows."
The movie also contains an original love song called "Lava," and Murphy hopes that it would give audiences the same feeling he had the first time he heard Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
The song is set to the story of a very lonely volcano who wishes he had "someone to lava."...

It's a bummer that we're not getting a theatrical release from Pixar Animation this year, but hopefully they'll make up for it next year with Inside Out, the heady story of the conflicting emotions inside a young girl's mind. And along with that film, as has become customary, we'll be getting an original short film from Pixar as well. It's called Lava, and the film is a 7-minute love story between two mountains named Uku and Lele (like ukulele, get it?). The film will actually premiere at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan next week, and before the film's release, a first look photo shows off one of the happy volcanoes. Here's a first look at Pixar Animation's next short film Lava from The Los Angeles Times: Unfortunately, the rest of us won't get to see Lava until Pixar's Inside Out hits theaters on June 19th, 2015 next summer. The...

Pixar is taking the year off, but next year they'll return with Inside Out, the new film from Pete Docter (Up), and with it comes a new Pixar, animated short film titled Lava with a lead character named Uku and yeah, that lead character is a volcano. Just above is the first look at Uku (via Los Angeles Times) and it sounds like it isn't straying too far from a common Pixar theme, which is the love story between two rather unique characters, whether it be umbrellas or robots, this time its Uku and fellow volcano, Lele. Directed by James Ford Murphy, the seven-minute short is set to premiere Monday at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan. The musical love story features a song titled "Lava", which Murphy wrote after learning to play the ukele in order to pitch the project. The song in the film will be performed...
