Beautiful Madras
kollamkumararun5 October 2014
The film encompasses elements like politics, drama, friendship, romance, betrayal, revenge and pride, and is a gripping affair all the way, with just a few minor breathers in the second half when the fare becomes predictable. The first half sets the benchmark pretty high with the tense, action-packed interval segment being among the best this year. Editor Praveen deserves credit for making the first half as taut as it is. Karthi has to be appreciated for accepting this script where he is just a part and not the pivot. This is easily one of his best and his noted caliber as a versatile performer comes to the fore again. In the raw fist cuffs and brawls, Karthi's intensity, punches and slaps appear truly real. Credit to the stunt choreographers too. Madras is definitely high on action!

Very intense and thoroughly gripping.

Watched 'Madras' movie recently. You can see the teamwork on each and every frame. They have shown the life of the people as it is in the real life and not making compromises for the cinematic elements. Karthi should be really appreciated for giving scope to the other character 'Anbu' which was the main role in the first half of the movie. And the characterization of the other actors in the movie was perfect. The guy who did the Johnny character was simply superb. Heroine did her part well, except in some parts she did not blend well into the people shown in that area. That's mainly because of her makeup in some sequences. The background score by Santhosh Narayanan was simply superb. He always stays away from the limelight but his music speaks a lot in the movie.

Overall this movie is a very good entertainer and thoroughly gripping. You name it whether it is cinematography, background score, casting, fight sequence , they did very well in all the departments.

Go for it. Don't miss this one!!!

Dark side of MADRAS
surenfut28 September 2014
Prestige, Politics, Friendship, Love & Anger is MADRAS.

Director Ranjith selection in cast and other technical crew work's out without any fault. All lead and supporting gave the new colour to the Chennai. Supporting actor Kalaiyarasan seems to be a promising one in the future. Composer Santhosh Narayan's delightful music is extraordinary.

After Berlin wall, Madras movie has a dangerous wall. Realistic stunt sequence is trending among the Action lovers and this move doesn't fail to keep it.

Verdict: Welcome to the new colour of Chennai city.

Engaging from start to end. Very realistic and has some great acting. The wall itself feels like a character in the movie and that's a big win.

Excellent - Must watch thriller / romance movie
ghajiniblue5 October 2014
This North Madras movie is a delight to hear and all the actors and others artists who have contributed to this effect, deserve a pat.

Madras, though on the longer side and venturing into predictable territory beyond a point, stands out for the presentation, the characterizations, the performances and for the unflinching direction efforts of Ranjith.

The movie does tries to preach, but thankfully doesn't stray too much. A film of such genre, with a rag-tag cast usually falls in the hands of a new comer or a struggling actor. So, though it's surprising to see actors like him do it, it feels good to know that they aren't afraid to experiment.

Madras is the right blend of raw action and commercial entertainment with a screenplay that will keep you hooked. Santhosh's soulful music and Karthi's brilliant performance, are other reasons this movie is a must watch.

The wall (sans Floyd, and not in Berlin)
sesht24 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, this flick looks, and sounds great. If one were to have urged the helmer (before he completed, this, of course) to retain the level of grittiness he brought to (most of) the flick before its break, and sustain the same all the way through, this would have been one heck of a movie.

The romantic interludes function well since they're closely integrated/tied-in to the larger plot unfolding, of youth politics and hooliganism being manipulated by powerful (albeit lesser) forces.

However, all good things must come to an end, and this completely loses itself to hero-worship during its final 20 minutes or so, something that was assiduously avoided until then, almost relegating the main lead to the role of a strong supporting character, when that very same character is brought back to the forefront with a series of highly implausible contrivances.

Santhosh Narayanan's 'Naan nee', and other rustic tracks are almost worth the price of admission alone.

To me, the wall-themed plot, which was used almost like a (weak) ploy that may have been (intensely?) personal and used as a metaphor by the writer/director, and perhaps even to a few sections of the audience, ultimately rang very thin to me, and I did not buy it much. Thankfully, though the helmer keeps reminding us that it is what is at stake with multiple focusing shots at it every 10 minutes or so, the rest of the plot is engaging enough to forget about that contrivance until we're reminded of it, time and again.

The paint scene graphics are painfully apparent, and did not need CGI.

The stilted, and amateurish-sounding/written dialogues are not a strength either, though I do recognize the intent for ensuring they sounded more realistic. Could've been rendered better.

The twist just before the intermission is one I did Not see coming, and that's always a good thing, and I could not wait for the break to end to see where it was all leading up to. There are a couple more after that break, with 1 long chase sequence that is intense and exciting at the same time, which is a rarity in mainstream Indian cinema (evokes memories of similar sequences in a few good old Sunny Deol movies - you knew what was coming, but were outta breath all the same; in this, you think you know what's gonna happen, and then......think again), where nothing surprises or takes hold. What is disappointing after is how the whole thing subsequently unravels, about which I've made a mention of earlier (above).

The ineffectual setup and the weak(er) denouement notwithstanding, I do applaud the effort made on this one, and feel that it deserves to be watched on the big screen with an audience.

A film that excelled from the beginning to the end of the film in terms of presentation style and performance of the actors.
sudheeshthulaseedharan2 November 2021
"Madras" is a film written and directed by Pa. Ranjith.

The spirit of the film is the intensity of the deep friendly relationship between the characters Kali (Karthi) and Anp (Kalaiyarasan).

The director manages to overcome all the pitfalls of presenting friendship, love, politics and hatred in the same thread through deep character creation.

The movie mainly tells the story of the problems and betrayals faced by the common man who emotionally embraces party politics without even understanding the main agenda of the political parties to exploit the social system of democracy in the most convenient way for their own convenience.

The film begins with a series of political struggles in which two factions have to be martyred in an ongoing dispute over a seemingly insignificant wall. Those who walk shoulder to shoulder for trivial things wield each other's swords.

The dispute over that wall does not end with the passing of generations. Even the image of a political leader painted on the wall is gaining relevance later in the film. As some of the stories spread around it, the wall becomes an integral part of the story.

It is impossible not to appreciate the director's excellence in adapting some of these things in the story that seem trivial and irrelevant at first glance in a serious and relevant way in the film's forward journey.

By reducing the number of close-up shots, the cameraman is able to draw the audience's attention to various parts of the scene through wide and long shot scenes.

A film that excelled from the beginning to the end of the film in terms of presentation style and performance of the actors.

A nice message movie for the masses....the original madras citizens
immyfastero12 October 2014
Director Pa ranjith even in his previous movie attakatthi, now in this movie portrays the emotions of common man of north madras correctly....

Nowadays i'm keep on wondering on the astonishing growth of Tamil cinema industry....Rather than showing usual fights, usual dramatic romance, usual heroism, usual buildups of normal Indian movies...they are standalone....This movie is one of its kind....

It clearly portrays the normal chennayite.....It showcases two different characters...one anbu, a energetic, political knowledged bravo...who is keen on developing the people of their region....another one, Kali(actor karthi)...a friend who just want to live his life happily...

As everyone has written so much in the above reviews..i don't want to narrate the story once again..i just want to tell some important things and drawbacks in this story

The film gives a social message to oppressed people as well as others that political knowledge is a must....As we are seeing the effects of lack of political knowledge in this dumbest generation......It also shows usual fights of the same region guys....

selection of actor karthi is good......but heroine selection is normal....They should have chosen some local chennai girl for this story....Even Anbu's wife Mary could have been selected as a heroine, as she represents the face of north chennai girls, moreover she is nice and beautiful....But Catherine will suit for other stories that will be story packed as well as commercial stuffs....

every song is nice...background sometimes playing when it doesn't require and it doesn't play when it is required....Like it plays when the masses try to erase the wall by pouring paints..at that time the music try to diminish the main thing protest...and it is been portrayed dramatically...Likewise when kali try to kill villain guy at last...simply background music plays..it should play when viji kill already beaten villain....

Of total...it is total superb movie with a important message that everyone should be taught of social politics which is needed for todays generations...and it shows kali starts doing it..instead of becoming usual hero involving in politics....Hats off to director pa ranjith...It 's a movie which we shouldn't miss
