A great end to series one.
Sleepin_Dragon2 October 2019
If ever an episode was needed to help secure a second series (although that had long since been done,) this was it. Series one concludes in real style with this fantastic episode.

There are two noticeably different things about this one, first of all, story, Sidney is left to fend for himself, as his gritty partner in crime is otherwise engaged. Secondly, the tone of this episode is very different, dare I say it I was reminded of another crime solving man of the cloth, Father Brown. There are several moments of humour here, Mrs Maguire's fainting scene was hilarious.

It's a very good mystery, you were left guessing the solution right up until the end. Amanda remains as frustrating a character as ever, playing poor Sidney along.

This was a great way to round off the first series.

Sidney is a conflicted character

Warning: Spoilers
Was mercy killing standard behavior for British military in WW2? Was Sandy asking for this when he said "I want to go home"?

Dramatic ending...this ain't Hogan's Heroes that's for sure

Warning: Spoilers
Things really come to a head in this season 1 finale of one of my favorite series. In no particular order, Sidney confesses to his German girlfriend Hildegard that he slept with Gloria in episode 5 during a jazz jaunt in London, and Hildegard is incredibly and understandably upset and leaves Sidney.

Talking about Germans, Sidney recounts to Georgie a very haunting incident in WW2. Sidney was forced to conduct a mercy killing of one of his soldiers who had been shot by a German on the battlefield. Definitely not Hogan's Heroes that's for sure.

David Troughton appears as a police commander, and he's someone I first noticed in A Very Peculiar Practice and also in New Tricks.

Episode 1.6

The finale of series one ties up certain stories. We have seen Sidney being distressed by his wartime memories. He finally tells Sidney what happened and why he blames himself for the death of one of his soldier's.

Sidney also tells his German girlfriend Hildegard that he has strayed with a jazz singer. Sidney is moping that Amanda is getting married. In fact he gets drunk and makes an embarrassing scene.

It is all pretty soapy stuff. As far as the mystery is concerned, Geordie is shot while investigating another shooting of a policeman.

While he is in hospital Sidney pokes his nose about and it leads to a local building magnate, Heath who was a commanding officer in the war. The two shootings are linked to him somehow. Sidney gets an answer from a person who served under Heath, he is also badly affected like Sidney with his memories of the war. Something Heath did causes him torment.

The mystery itself is simple maybe because the series wants to tie up some loose ends. There was nothing much taxing here, it is just easy viewing but it lacked the fun of Father Brown.

Soooo slowww and boorrring and nothing like the books which are good
Franklie23 February 2015
This episode was the worst of the season.

We really really wish they'd stuck with the intelligence and pace and story lines of the books. The film version stories are so slow and flat and that we can't wait for them to be over and we won't be watching them again. They don't flow all that well either.

The actors are great, but the characters aren't as smart and decent as they should be (except for Hildegard) and they're full of clichés, for example the "You're not a cop" speech given by police which we've heard way too many times. And having Sydney be so needy is not a way to endear us or his ladies to him either. "I need you" is a clear sign to run. ") Hopefully they revamp things a bit for next season. The UK is capable of producing such great films. Some we watch again and again because we become so attached to the characters and the places. Grantchester has the potential to be that great. It just needs some tidying up. Being more true to James Runcie's stories would be the best first step.
