Angelina Jolie may have missed out on a competitive Gotham Award nomination this year for her acclaimed performance in “Maria,” but the Oscar-winning actress will still participate in the upcoming ceremony.
On Thursday, the Gotham Film & Media Institute announced Jolie will receive the Performer Tribute for her performance as Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s upcoming film “Maria.” The actress will receive the honor at the 34th edition of The Gothams, taking place on Monday, December 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. According to a press release, “The tribute will honor Jolie’s rendition of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas.”
“Like the legendary figure she portrays, Angelina Jolie transcends mere performance to craft something extraordinary. Her interpretation captures both Maria Callas’s complexity as an artist and the cultural resonance that defines an icon,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham. “We are thrilled to...

Konstantin Stanislavski taught us that “there are no small parts, only small actors.” Film and TV familiar face Dabbs Greer believed that “every character actor, in their own little sphere, is the lead.” Both would probably have been excited about this year’s Oscar race, where several best picture contenders high-light the power of an ensemble film: no matter where a talent ranks on the call sheet, everyone in the film has some choice scene time.
“I don’t care where they come from, but we had 80 speaking roles and they all have to match,” “Saturday Night” director Jason Reitman says of crossing oceans and comedy and drama verticals to find an eclectic mix of players to re-create the hour and a half leading up to the first-ever episode of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” “They all have to fit within the same world. The Penguin on HBO is living up to Robert Pattinson’s The Batman. The show has quickly won over fans with its sharp writing, engaging characters, and well-crafted dialogue. This is not just a show featuring Colin Farrell in an excellent role as Oswald Cobb but it is also ripe with plenty of other messy and interesting characters.

Apart from Colin Farrell, the cast also features Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo, and Michael Zegen. Mark Strong appears as Falcone in the show but in flashbacks, while John Turturro originally played the character in The Batman.
So far, five episodes have been released, and the viewership numbers are impressive. Let’s take a closer look at how the show is doing!

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix will never hear the end of fans whining about how underwhelming Joker: Folie à Deux was. Having achieved so much with the initial release in 2019, Phillips probably thought he could get away with adding an unusual and unexpected twist to the sequel. But things simply haven’t worked out in his favor this time.

It has been just over two weeks since the movie’s release, and the fact that the Joker’s story was transformed into a musical has backfired big time! Things are getting so out of hand that Warner Bros. is about to add the movie to streaming platforms to alleviate the damage that it might endure during its theatrical run. But what’s worse is other small-budget films are doing far better than Joker: Folie à Deux.

The superhero genre has long been spearheaded by two of the most extensive franchises, Marvel and DC. Both franchises have been responsible for producing brilliant movies on the big screen.
After conquering the theatre, Marvel ventured into making its name on the small screen via TV series. Unfortunately, lately, the shows haven’t fared well among fans who quickly grew disappointed with the franchise. DC’s The Penguin has led to a far greater response, leading fans to believe it couldn’t be compared to Marvel’s latest show Agatha All Along.
The strong opponent and lost trust
After the sad state of Marvel TV shows, fans began to lose trust in the franchise to ever produce a hit like Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki again. The 2023 show Secret Invasion set the bar extremely low and was even ranked as the worst MCU show ever.

While comic book capers are in a bit of a funk right now, there’s a glimmer of hope in the form of Lauren LeFranc’s The Penguin, a spinoff of director Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman. Joker: Folie à Deux might not have lived up to the impressive standard set by 2019’s Joker, but The Penguin is being praised as one of the best TV shows around.
It feels like only yesterday that Colin Farrell’s portly Penguin waddled into our lives in The Batman, and although some were originally skeptical of spinning Reeves’ world out into more live-action projects, this gritty crime drama with nods to The Godfather and The Sopranos has rightly earned its place as one of Gotham’s greatest.
More than just stellar performances from Farrell and Cristin Milioti (playing Sofia Falcone), The Penguin has turned into an Easter egg hunt worthy of the Dark Knight himself.

This post contains spoilers for episode four of "The Penguin."
Over its first three episodes, "The Penguin" included several subtle Easter eggs that allude to wider Batman lore. The character of Rex Calabrese, of whom Oz talks so highly in episode one, is a villain from the "Batman" comics, while that same episode gave us a neat spin on Robin's origin story using the show's biggest supporting character. There are even more hidden nods to Bat-history throughout "The Penguin," with names of writers and producers appearing on documents and areas of Gotham named after prominent "Batman" writers of years past.
But on the whole, the show has tried its best to stay away from overt references to the Dark Knight himself. Prior to its debut, showrunner Lauren LeFranc made clear that she was crafting a standalone series that would not rely on Robert Pattinson's hero from "The Batman...

This weekend brought a shocking act of clown-on-clown violence as Damien Leone's horror sequel "Terrifier 3" brutally cut down "Joker: Folie à Deux" at the box office. Todd Phillips' comic book movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, got off to a disappointing start last week with a $37.8 million debut. But it's now on track to suffer an absolutely shocking 82% drop in its second weekend, with an estimated Friday-to-Sunday total of just $6.8 million (per The Wrap).
That's not only the worst sophomore drop in the history of DC movies -- it's the worst second weekend drop ever for a Hollywood comic book movie, breaking the record previously set by "The Marvels" (80%).
There's a certain poetry (especially if you've seen the movie) to "Joker: Folie à Deux" being slain by a fellow jester. The monster at the heart of "Terrifier 3" is David Howard Thornton's Art the Clown,...

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.

Lorne Michaels is the creator and, to this day, producer of “Saturday Night Live.” He’s played in “Saturday Night” by Gabriel Labelle, who had his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.

This article contains major spoilers for "Joker: Folie à Deux."
Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" is a fascinating animal. It's slow, depressive, turgid, and far too long at 139 minutes. It's a musical, but the musical numbers feel lazy and disinterested; no one seems to be moved to passion by the songs they're crooning. And yet, it comes to a fascinatingly deconstructionist conclusion. At the end of the film — not to give anything away — Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) comes to a pretty bleak conclusion about being the Joker, finding that his chaotic clown fantasy isn't all that appealing. This is galling to his would-be girlfriend Lee (Lady Gaga) who is all too eager to become a criminal clown herself. Phillips seems eager to rip down the myth of the Joker, and superhero cinema in general. More than ever before, it feels like the genre is at an end.

The slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer is returning with a brand new legacy sequel next year, with Freddie Prinze Jr. confirmed to reprise his role from the original movies and Jennifer Love Hewitt in talks to return as well. One star of the 1997 slasher movie who won’t be back? Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Helen Shivers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character was memorably butchered in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it’s not like we haven’t seen previously dead characters return to life in the horror genre. The actress confirms in a new chat with People, however, that she won’t be back.
“I am dead,” Sarah Michelle Gellar flat out responded to the outlet when they asked if she’d be back in next year’s franchise reboot. That doesn’t mean she won’t be contributing to the project behind the scenes,...

Creator and director of the "Terrifier" series, Damien Leone, had one mission with his splatter saga. The enterprising filmmaker set out to deliver movies that go further than any Hollywood slasher ever would, presenting viscera-soaked nightmares that somehow get worse with each new entry in the franchise. It prompted horror aficionado Mike Flanagan to dub 2022's "Terrifier 2" a "MegaSlasher," and while such labels might be redundant as long as the "splatter" genre exists, there is something unique about Leone and his trilogy, if only in the sense that these celebrations of unfiltered gore have gained more widespread recognition than they have any right to in recent years.

As I have mentioned previously as well, one of the major issues some of the fans had with Todd Phillips’ Joker was the fact that it attempted to tie a character like Joker to a traditional origin story. Throughout his eight-decade-long history, Joker has been interpreted and presented in a number of different ways, be it as the goofy trickster clown of Batman (1966), a mobster in Tim Burton’s cinematic adaptation, the anarchist of Dark Knight, or as a psychotic killer as in most other ventures. Without being constrained by a singular, definitive background, the Joker’s past has always remained a mystery and added to the intrigue of the character. Viewers might remember in Dark Knight, Heath Ledger’s Joker was unreliable as he presented different reasons for his facial scars—and this is to convey that one cannot simplify or define a chaotic element like Joker to ‘normal’ causality guided by societal dictates.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "Joker: Folie à Deux" and "Gotham."
In Todd Phillips' 2019 "Joker," Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is a nobody, in the sense that he is made to feel that his dreams and hopes amount to nothing, like that of a non-entity. There are some worthwhile layers to this character study, as Arthur is shaped by cyclical abuse and trauma, which he initially attempts to stifle by attempting to make people laugh. However, one bad joke after another escalates into a killing spree, and before he can even process what has happened, he evolves into a symbol of anarchy in Gotham, inadvertently infecting others with his madness. He starts as the Joker, but his life-altering act of infamy morphs the individual into an idea, shared freely among those obsessed with what they think he stands for, creating many who aspire to be Jokers.

Joker: Folie à Deux is now in theaters, and while the movie has not been embraced by the majority of fans or critics, there's no denying that director Todd Phillips clearly made the sequel he wanted to make... for better or worse.
Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver decided not to go the more obvious route of following Arthur Fleck as he fully embraced his persona as Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime, instead having Arthur take responsibility for the damage "Joker" has caused and confess to his crimes during his trial.
This alienates Lee (Lady Gaga) and the rest of his followers, and ultimately proves to be his undoing when a deranged young inmate stabs him to death in Arkham before carving a Glasgow Smile into his own face.
"Yes, this means Arthur was never really Joker in the first place; he merely served as the inspiration for the man who'd become Joker after him,...

The Industry actor sets his sights on Gotham, Hollywood and beyond
While enjoying the lingering LA sun the evening before he began shooting Joker: Folie À Deux, Harry Lawtey — who describes himself as “a nervous presence” — had an epiphany. “You may never be in a position like this again,” he thought. ”So you’ve just got to give it a go and try to enjoy it.” He will be forever grateful for that moment, as the next day the 27-year-old arrived on set as tenacious Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent, ready to go toe-to-toe with Joaquin Phoenix’s tortured clown. As if the stakes weren’t high enough, scheduling meant that he wasn’t introduced to his co-star until they were filming a scene together. “The first time I lay eyes on Joaquin, [there’s] a close-up of my face looking at him walking into a room in character,” Lawtey marvels to Empire.

"Batman: The Animated Series" wound up being as definitive an account of the Dark Knight as its title suggested. So when a new Batman cartoon finally came afterwards, it was destined to never escape the shadow of "Btas." But "The Batman" (which aired from 2004 to 2008) made a noble effort and remains one of the more unique spins on the Caped Crusader.
"The Batman," developed by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi, was the first animated Batman in 12 years that was unconnected to the DC Animated Universe (The shared setting that began with "Batman: The Animated Series" and concluded with "Justice League Unlimited").
Bruce Wayne in "The Batman" was voiced by Rino Romano, and Joker by Kevin Michael Richardson, rather than the beloved Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker duo. Bruce Timm modeled "Batman: The Animated Series" on the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons, while Jeff Matsuda gave Gotham City an anime makeover.

Amidst all the divisive reactions, concerns regarding the narrative’s social impact, and controversy for rehashing ideas from Martin Scorsese’s movies, the biggest challenge 2019’s wildly successful DC movie, Joker, initially faced was justifying its existence in the first place. Agreed, solo movies based on supervillains are quite common these days and given the fact that Gotham’s Caped Crusader boasts a number of iconic ones, making features on the city’s worst criminal elements seems like a logical choice. But picking someone whose mysterious, undisclosed past is part of the enigma that surrounds him seemed like a choice that undermined the character’s significance. Even though the movie fared pretty well, thanks to actor Joaquin Phoenix’s spellbinding, haunting performance as the titular clown prince of crime, taking the origin story approach in a movie that unfolds as a very on-the-nose treatment of issues like class conflict and...

Turns out “The Penguin” wasn’t the only spin-off of “The Batman” Matt Reeves wanted to bring to TV. In addition to the Arkham Asylum project developed by Antonio Campos and later shelved, “Boardwalk Empire” creator and “Tulsa King” showrunner Terence Winter also had plans on collaborating with Reeves on a series focusing around Gotham City Police Department. A similar series called “Gotham” starring Ben Mackenzie as a pre-Lieutenant Jim Gordan ran on Fox for five seasons, but in a recent interview on The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast, Winter said his version would have had a period element that set it apart.
“The idea was that we were going to do a 1970s cop show — something that felt like [Sidney Lumet’s 1981 crime drama] ‘Prince of the City,’ but in the Gotham City Police Department,” Winter said. “It was going to have that [‘70s] feel. It was going to be a...

Villains really are the new superheroes.
DC Studios has tapped screenwriter Matthew Orton (“Captain America: Brave New World”) to write a feature film that will involve Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke, Variety has confirmed. The project is still in its infancy: There are no stars or director attached, and DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have been clear that they will not greenlight a project until they are satisfied with a complete screenplay.
The movie follows a growing trend in the superhero space of projects focusing as much on the villains as on the heroes, from the ongoing HBO series “The Penguin” and Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” to Warner Bros. upcoming sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” and Sony’s upcoming Marvel adaptations “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter.”

There is a lot of crossover in the pop-culture sphere. If an actor is part of one major franchise; chances are that they might be part of another too. Look no further than the likes of Michael Keaton, Ryan Reynolds, and Josh Brolin, who have starred in both DC and Marvel projects.
That extends to Star Wars, too. Mark Hamill, for example, is best-known to one audience for portraying the legendary Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, and to another for voicing The Joker in many classic Batman TV shows and movies (including Batman: The Animated Series and the Batman Arkham video game series).
But it turns out that he isn't the only Joker actor to appear in the Star Wars franchise, and according to a new report, the other Clown Prince Of Crime could be about to make his debut live-action appearance in the Star Wars universe.

“Boardwalk Empire” creator and “The Sopranos” executive producer Terence Winter is finally opening up about “The Batman” spinoff series centered on the Gotham police department that failed to get off the ground. Winter and “The Batman” director Matt Reeves were developing the show prior to the release of the 2022 comic book film, but Winter exited a few months after the show’s announcement. "My dear penguins, we stand on a great threshold!" But if you haven't caught up with the first episode of "The Penguin," then turn around because there are some spoilers ahead.
Batman is only as recognizable as his villains, and few of them are as recognizable as The Penguin. From his long beak-like nose to his morning suit and signature umbrella (and occasionally his army of penguins), there's a reason the character continues to be a big part of Batman stories after so many decades. Now we have "The Penguin," which is finally a chance for Oz Cobb (formerly known as Oswald Cobblepot) to get the spotlight. Even if the show changes some elements of the character, one important trait remains the same — the Penguin's waddle.

Colin Farrell is far from the first person to make his mark playing famous Batman rogue The Penguin in HBO’s aptly named new series “The Penguin.”
Of all the superheroes, Batman’s villains are the most recognizable. Among them The Penguin stands as possibly the most recognizable behind only the Joker. That’s led to quite a number of actors getting a crack at the character over the years beginning way back in the mid-60s.
There have been a few one-off performances in TV or animated movies where people lent their voice, but these 10 performers made their mark on the character especially felt. Before you get too deep into “The Penguin,” go back and appreciate the long history of the Batman villain on the big and small screen.

When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin.
The series, titled The Penguin, premiered on September 19, 2024, and both the critics and the fans are loving it, calling it a worthy sequel to Reeves’ film and a brilliant example of world-building. This post contains spoilers for episode one of "The Penguin"
HBO's "The Penguin" has plunged fans into the heart of Gotham City, with a show that focuses on the travails of Colin Farrell's Penguin. The series expands the universe established by Matt Reeves in 2022's "The Batman," focusing on Penguin's power grab following the death of mob boss Carmine Falcone in the film. But Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight won't be showing up in this series, which is, as showrunner Lauren LeFranc previously explained to SFX, focused much more on "the grit and the muck and the grime" of Gotham City.
There's certainly plenty of that in the gothic industrial decay first seen in "The Batman." With that film, Reeves, production designer James Chinlund, and cinematographer Greig Fraser crafted a Gotham that felt simultaneously decrepit and somehow alluring, frequently lit by a warm tungsten glow that helped establish a suitably moody atmosphere.

Colin Farrell delivered the standout performance in Matt Reeves' "The Batman," as the Penguin: a capo who is ridiculous and kind of pathetic, but is also pretty cunning -- not to mention a good student of Spanish grammar. It makes sense, then, that the first spin-off of Reeves' universe would be "The Penguin."
This is the second time we've had a Batman TV show without Batman centering on Penguin's rise to power of Penguin, following the delightfully weird and bizarre "Gotham." As for "The Penguin," Colin Farrell is compelling, and it is thrilling to see his character ascend, but the show would probably have been served in a feature film format. As our review reads: "The 8-hour movie approach ultimately fails the series, but you'll likely find yourself drawn to these extremely flawed characters and all the damage they cause along the way."

If you enjoyed Matt Reeves' The Batman with the family, or at least with your older children, you'd naturally be interested in seeing the continuation of the story--through Oz's eyes--but, before you start planning a living room watch party, there are some things you should know about The Penguin first.
The HBO original, which debuts Thursday, Sept. 19, is rated TV-ma. Having watched the premiere, I can tell you that you're in for a more coarse viewing than the movie the show is a spinoff from. While The Batman was dark, broody, violent and followed the mad workings of The Riddler, a serial killer out for revenge, it was PG-13 and at its heart a detective story.
The Penguin is a crime drama and it follows the typical trappings of the genre. The series has the feel of The Sopranos set in the grime and grit of Gotham. Oz, whose surname...

Dark, gritty, grim, enigmatic, and yet, hopeful. Matt Reeves' The Batman is an epic superhero tale that dives into the broken streets of Gotham City to showcase its true horrors. The movie explores how far some are willing to go to cover their corrupt actions and the extremes others will reach to uncover the truth. At its core, the story is about The Dark Knight following The Riddler's puzzles and clues in an attempt to stop him. However, other key characters also come into play, setting up big things for the franchise's future.
Now, audiences will get to experience the next chapter in Matt Reeves' Batman saga. The Penguin, an HBO spinoff, has been making headlines for its stellar reviews, which call it a thrilling mafia drama filled with Emmy-worthy performances. But before we finally get to watch the highly anticipated series, it's time to recap everything its predecessor had...

Who will rule the seedy underbelly of Gotham City? Which rogue will step out of the shadows to lay claim to the vast criminal enterprise once owned by Carmine Falcone? If Oswald Cobblepot has anything to say about it, it will be himself. That’s the premise of “The Penguin,” the new limited series premiering on Max on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 9 p.m. Et. If Oz succeeds, no one will dare to call him by the nickname “Penguin” again… at least not to his face. Watch the show with a 7-Day Free Trial of Max.
