A baptism of fire for new assistant Aiden.
Sleepin_Dragon10 October 2018
Series four opens with a very strong episode, the case is a complex one, with plenty of suspects, and plenty of twists and turns, it seems everyone in the life of the victim is a potential suspect.

I'm sure most of us fans of the show were sad to see David Leon leave, but instantly Kenny Doughty fitted right in, such an excellent piece of casting, he's a cocky character, and instantly up to his stern boss Vera.

A few times you have to question the behaviour of some of the officers, I'm fairly certain the Police are a bit more guarded when it comes to sharing information with one another, on too many occasions officers are shouting discoveries all over the place, unrealistic.

Very well made, with super production values, the location work is stunning. Very well acted all round, with an excellent performance in particular from Dorian Lough.

Years on I still enjoyed it, and am still glad that Doughty has remained in the show, the pair work so well together.

a new assistant for Vera
blanche-25 November 2015
Kenny Doughty joins the cast as Aiden Healy, Vera's new assistant, now that Joe has been promoted.

Vera is asked to investigate an explosion at a trailer part. The park owner's sister, Deena, died in a fire.

That evening, Deena and a friend, Sally, attended a bachelor party for Ryan, the fiancé of the owner's daughter Claire.

Vera finds out that Deena was murdered and then placed in the trailer before the fire.

There are a few motives and suspects, and Vera and Aiden have to sort through them and figure out who did what to whom.

Someone here commented on the lack of Geordie accents. I understand the frustration, but I can also tell you that if Geordie accents had been used, most people would have difficulty understanding them. I have first-hand experience.

Brenda Blethyn is excellent, and Kenny Doughty will take some getting used to. I liked Joe, easy on the eyes, and he had a great relationship with Vera. Hopefully Doughty will grow on me.

Series Five alive

We are binge-watching a series a day whilst in self-isolation and have to say this is the weakest episode so far. No explanation is given as to where Bethany gas been for 2 years and no mention of the whereabouts of Shep. It's hard to care about the characters here but still great humour.

One glaring error
zincoid5825 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode but at the very least it did contain one glaring error. When a telephone call is received from Bethany asking whether Malcolm Raggert should be charged with murder or manslaughter, Vera says murder. As it had already been established that Deena had not died as the result of the fire and was already dead when the fire started, neither of these charges would have even been considered. The most serious charge likely to have been considered would have been Arson - reckless as to whether life endangered. One other thing that seemed to be lacking clarity was what charge would Claire actually be facing as it did not appear that any intent could be proved. At best a manslaughter charge but certainly not murder.

Not a great episode for Aiden to start with
boxyfella12 November 2021
I have to agree with the other reviewers here, over several points.

I absolutely agree that this has been the weakest episode since the season opener.

Some continuity would be great. It's nice that Joe's departure was explained and there was even a mention of Celine, but Bethany and Shep? And what about the chap who was in at the end of season 4 (his only appearance?) replacing DC Edwards who is now miraculously back.

I agree too about the charges, ludicrous.

I too have had concerns about the behaviour of the officers for some time, they seem to have a cavalier approach, saying too much, often with little thought, seemingly oblivious to the lives they are destroying.

On the plus side, the location work was stunning as always.
