Last week, The Hollywood Reporter reported that cinephiles were sharing “samizdat” links to Woody Allen’s latest film Coup de Chance from a French-to-Dutch-to-English translation, and New Yorkers were attending clandestine screenings at an East Village bar/event space. Today, THR can exclusively report that those who wish to see the 88-year-old’s latest project, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival in early September to (mostly) positive reviews, can do so without slinking around or needing secret codes.
MPI Media Group will release the picture, Allen’s 50th theatrically released feature film as a director, for North American markets on April 5, 2024. A digital/VOD release will follow on April 12.
The movie, shot in France in French, stars Lou de Laâge (Respire, The Mad Woman’s Ball) as a self-aware trophy wife who reconnects with an old chum from the Lycée Français in New York, played by Niels Schneider (Heartbeats,...

Plot: Onyx the Fortuitous is struggling to find purpose with his soul-devouring side gig when he receives a coveted invitation to the mansion of his idol, Bartok the Great. Here, he joins Bartok and his mysterious delegation to raise the spirit of an ancient demon for a once-in-a-lifetime ritual.
Review: Adaptations are always tricky, let alone trying to adapt something like a character from YouTube. Yet somehow Andrew Bowser’s Onyx the Fortuitous works really well in the narrative here. Sure, there are going to be people that are driven crazy by his delivery but I found myself oddly charmed by it. And it doesn’t hurt that there’s a spectacular cast surrounding him that provides plenty of hilarity. I would hope that most know what they’re getting into when it comes to something called Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. But you never know.

Nearly eight years have passed since writer/director Jason Lei Howden announced that he would be making a sequel to his feature directorial debut Deathgasm (watch it Here). In that time, Howden has made Guns Akimbo and set up a film and comic book project called Monsters of Metal… and now he’s finally getting ready to head into production on Deathgasm 2! But to get the sequel made properly, he needs some help from the fans. That’s why Deathgasm 2 is currently raising funds and selling perks – including accepting pre-orders for copies of the finished film – on Kickstarter.
Deathgasm, released in 2015, tells the story of two high-school metal-heads, Brodie (played by Cawthorne) and Zakk (Blake), who form a band called Deathgasm. One day, while delving into some dark magic to escape their mundane lives, the duo unwittingly summon an evil entity called The Blind One. In the sequel, “which promises...

The first trailer for “Our Flag Means Death” Season 2 has arrived, and it’s full of old romances and new characters.
The show picks up right where Season 1 left off. “Our Flag Means Death” will follow Gentleman Pirate captain Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) as he tries to reunite his crew and apologize to his best friend and new love, Ed, aka Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).
After a near-death experience, Season 1 ended with Stede choosing to return to his old life and wife rather than sail away with Ed. It wasn’t a rejection that the notoriously violent Blackbeard took well and that’s set to be a main crux of this new season.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, Season 2 stars returning cast members Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon and Leslie Jones.

Rock ‘n’ roll and horror: a match made in hell! From electrifying riffs to spine-chilling screams, these heavy metal mashups create a headbanging, heart-pounding experience that resonates with rebels and thrill-seekers alike. Whether you’re a fan of rebellious music or cinema of the fringe, nearly everyone can agree they go together like peanut butter and jelly.
What makes them such perfect partners? Perhaps it’s their shared love for the dark, the dangerous, and the fantastical. Rock ‘n’ roll has always been the music of outcasts, and horror dares to delve into our deepest fears. Together, they create a symphony of shock that thrills and chills.
From demonic deals to killer concerts, rock ‘n’ roll horror movies explore the intersection of music and mayhem. They’re films that rock, scare, and leave us begging for an encore.
So grab your leather jacket, tune your air guitar, and turn up the volume.

Jason Lei Howden has directed a couple of very cool movies – Deathgasm and Guns Akimbo – and his third feature is already sounding quite promising. Deadline reports that Howden will be directing a film called Monsters of Metal, based on the comic book he created with Llexi Leon. The first issue of Monsters of Metal won’t be in stores until October 19th, and is coming our way from Opus Comics.
Monsters of Metal is described as “an R-rated mockumentary – a cross between Spinal Tap and The Monster Squad“, since it’s about a bunch of iconic monsters who are in a heavy metal band. Here’s the comic’s description:
Frankenstein’s monster (named Frank) and his bandmates Medusa, Jack O’Lantern, Werewolf and the Bride have spent the last few centuries squatting in Dracula’s castle – unbeknown to their slumbering host. But after a band rehearsal gets out of hand and wakes the fearsome vamp,...

Rock 'n roll has long been friendly to the occult. It's a relationship whose lore stretches all the way back to blues pioneer Robert Johnson's fabled crossroads deal with the devil in exchange for musical mastery, and the entire heavy metal genre is infused with it (don't even get me started on Black Sabbath). You can't listen to an album like Pink Floyd's "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and tell me with a straight face that rock musicians aren't intensely spiritual.

From Black Sheep to Deathgasm to Housebound, New Zealand has a pretty good relationship with horror, even if it leans towards the comedy side sometimes (this is no bad thing of course!) but Coming Home In The Dark is anything but a comedy movie.
It doesn’t take long to realise this either as the opening scenes show two guys come across a family in the beautiful but scarcely populated New Zealand wilderness. These two guys aren’t very nice people and are soon taking the family on a terrifying road trip.
Coming Home In The Dark is brutally violent but you’ll never numb to this violence. It isn’t plastered across every minute of the movie, there’s meaning, thought and reasoning behind each and every hit.

Heavy metal and horror seem to go hand in hand. Many people who like one, will like the other, so it’s maybe a bit of a surprise that there’s not actually that many movies that link the two. Most recently Deathgasm was ridiculous, loud and fun, the real-life horror story of Lords of Chaos was scarily violent and Devil’s Candy is perhaps the most metal of the three. So We Summon The Darkness has some entertaining company to live up to.
Set in the eighties, a group of three girls meet up with three like-minded guys to enjoy a night of metal, drinking and each others company. But one group have very different ideas to the others about way the night is heading.

“Guns Akimbo” is kind of fun if you don’t expect more from it than a bratty, gore-soaked sci-fi/action black comedy about a shy gamer who learns to stop worrying and accept that he’s part of an online community full of desensitized players and bloodthirsty trolls.
Daniel Radcliffe stars as Miles, a bland audience surrogate and Nice Guy who learns to enjoy killing strangers in real life after he’s abducted and forced to participate in Skizm, an online fight club. Miles’ adventure isn’t an especially scathing social media critique since it’s set in a not-too-distant future where both cops and internet netizens are so inured to online trolling and explicit violence that the rise of Skizm is just grist for a seconds-long TV news montage.

It was only a couple of days ago that the first trailer for Guns Akimbo was released, and it was clearly decided that a mere two minutes were not enough to adequately convey the film’s sheer volume of unremitting chaos. As such, another is now available for your viewing pleasure, and looks even more glorious.
The plot sees waster Miles (Daniel Radcliffe) run afoul of Skizm, a gang running a dark net site that livestreams urban gladiatorial death matches, and discovers his first battle is against the reigning champion Nix, played by Samara Weaving, who after this, Ready Or Not and Mayhem is fast establishing action credentials that should see her headline a new franchise in the imminent future if there’s any justice left in this hellhole of a world.

Admit it. That's the first thing you would think about when you heard that a guy gets guns bolted to his hands. Never mind putting on clothes, opening doors, pulling anything out of your pockets. I expect especially for anyone with a penis, the thought of a gun being that close such a sensitive body part would cross their legs and grimace a bit at the thought. But such is just one part of the insane yet clever premise of Guns Akimbo, the second feature from Jason Lei Howden. His first feature, Deathgasm (about two hapless teenager metalheads summon a demon who wreaks havoc) was a hit on the festival circuit, and its looks like this new film is a similar combination of craziness, violent...

Emma Watson may be breaking hearts in Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated “Little Women,” but there’s no doubt that Daniel Radcliffe has forged the most provocative and unexpected career of the original “Harry Potter” franchise trio. He established himself as a deft comedic actor in TV shows “Miracle Workers,” “2 Dope Queens,” and voices on “The Simpsons” and “Robot Chicken.” The performance that completely reset his career was 2016’s “Swiss Army Man,” the feature debut from dynamic filmmaking duo the Daniels, which was so singular and inventive that it wiped the image of Radcliffe in a wizard robe from the mind of anyone who saw it. After that, and Radcliffe’s continued insistence on working with up-and-coming filmmakers on genre-pushing films, and “Guns Akimbo” doesn’t seem like such a stretch.

Back in 2015, Jason Lei Howden rocked horror viewers with his heavy metal horror film Deathgasm, and now he's back behind the camera with his second feature film, Guns Akimbo. Daniel Radcliffe is among the child-actors of the last decade who has managed to emerge mostly unscathed as an adult talent though he's done so via a series of oddball roles in movies that are far from mainstream. He's been Ginsberg, Igor, a farting corpse, and the latest appears to be another example of Radcliffe playing by his own rules.
In Guns Akimbo, the sophomore effort from Deathgasm director Jason Lei Howden, Radcliffe plays Miles, a video game developer who finds himself at the centre of a streaming action game with guns welded to his hands. There's a point, something about a girl, but that seems beside the point.
Along with Radcliffe, the movie also stars Ned Dennehy and Samara Weaving who had a breakout last year with Ready or Not.

Could you imagine a world where watching people die for your entertainment was the norm? Twitch would be one hell of a different place if so. Well, “Guns Akimbo” will show people fighting for their survival in tournament based death matches.
The film, described as “hilariously dark, viciously violent, and chillingly prescient sci-fi thriller,” by Tiff, is directed by Jason Lei Howden in what will be his second feature length, following his “Deathgasm” debut back in 2015.

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to the sci-fi thriller “Guns Akimbo,” starring Daniel Radcliffe, the company announced Saturday.
Written and directed by Jason Lei Howden (“Deathgasm”) the film stars Radcliffe as a nerdy video game developer in a dead-end job, who finds himself with guns surgically attached to his hands, forced to become the newest contestant in an illegal, live-streamed death match.
“When I got to about page 10 of the script and there was this scene where my character Miles with his new gun attachment hands has to work out and try to go to the bathroom. That was the moment that I was like ‘You’re fully exploring the premise, I’m in,” Radcliffe told TheWrap after the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Just when you think, "they've done it all", someone will come up with some other crazy-as-shit idea and turn it into a movie. The next evolution in the wild action comedy subgenre is a movie titled Guns Akimbo, this time coming from New Zealand (though it was filmed partially in Germany in addition to New Zealand). Guns Akimbo is the second feature film from a New Zealand visual effects artist-turned-filmmaker named Jason Lei Howden, following up his debut film Deathgasm from 2015. The crazy-as-shit concept in this one involves a random guy waking up one day with guns bolted to both of his hands - he can't remove them or do anything because they're drilled right into his bones. But, why? What happens next? Will he survive? You'll find out in Guns Akimbo, which is as totally insane and as totally entertaining as that concept sounds. Set in the near future,...

“Have you learned nothing from video games?” asks one character during a momentary lull from noisy mayhem in “Guns Akimbo.” It’s the wrong question for this movie, whose makers have clearly learned from little else. Those wanting to kiss a few brain cells goodbye may enjoy this bombastic, crassly jokey action cartoon with Daniel Radcliffe as a dweeb who finds himself unpleasantly designated a new player in the unsimulated kill-or-die game he’s been watching online.
Jason Lei Howden’s Kiwi-German co-production should do a bit better than last year’s vaguely similar Tiff-premiering enterprise “Nekrotronic,” but it still seems primarily a streaming item.
Radcliffe’s Miles is a stereotypical 21st-century nerd living alone in an action-figure-crammed flat, whose only girlfriend is the ex he’s still stuck on (Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Nova), and who’s bullied by a frat-bro boss at his job working for a company...

Tagline: "Out of Time Without a Clue." Mega Time Squad is an upcoming sci-fi comedy. From the mind of Tim van Dammen (Deathgasm), Mega Time Squad is set to release this April, through Dark Sky Films. The story is a strange one, in which a time shifting robber creates copies of himself. Very greedy, this robber needs to get rid of his accomplices - all who look exactly like him. This title also stars: Jonny Brugh (What We Do in the Shadows), Hahn Milo Cawthorne (Deathgasm) and Anton Tennet. The film will be released on home entertainment formats in just a couple of weeks. Director Dammen has talked about this film. He says of the story and premise: "[its] a time travel heist comedy about a small town criminal who accidentally acquires a time travel bracelet and uses it to steal a bunch of cash from the local crime boss...he...

Take the techno-paranoia of Black Mirror, add the intergalactic body horror of John Carpenter’s The Thing, adapt them into a VHS board game, and wrap it all up in a bitingly satirical Christmas-movie package, and what do you get?
Critics say:
“Smart sci-fi horror… well-realized and effective” -Bloody-disgusting
“Sharp and twisted.” -Sci Fi Now
“A fantastic siege horror film.” -Daily Grindhouse
“A hell of a ride.” – Modern Horrors
Await Further Instructions is from British director Johnny Kevorkian and co-stars David Bradley of Game Of Thrones, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter fame.
It’ll be in theaters and on VOD October 5th from Dark Sky Films.
It’s Christmas Day and the Milgram family wake to find a mysterious black substance surrounding their house. Something monumental is clearly happening right outside their door, but what exactly – an industrial accident, a terrorist attack, nuclear war? Descending into terrified arguments, they turn on the television,...

You played a Street Demon in director Jason Lei Howden’s FrightFest favourite Deathgasm. Is the New Zealand film community that small?
I didn’t play a street demon; I am a street demon. The film community in Nz is small enough for most active people to know most other active people – but the genre scene is small enough for us all to know each other by at least one degree of separation. Many of my friends worked on or acted in Deathgasm and they needed a night shoot of ‘street demons’ so I donned my tie-dye and offered to help out. It was a lot of fun and I think Jason and the team did an incredible job.
Have you met Peter Jackson and do you see him as the ultimate Kiwi role model?

If you would have told me that a Finnish heavy metal road movie featuring corpses and a whole lot of vomiting would be one of greatest feel-good movies of 2018, I don’t think I would have believed you. But, here we are and Heavy Trip is just an absolute delight. Maybe that doesn’t sound very “metal” to you, but directors Juuso Laatio and Jukka Vidgren have crafted an engaging story for anyone who has ever dared to have a dream, or wanted more from their lives, and aren’t about to let fate stop them, and I absolutely adored their endlessly charming tale of Impaled Rektum and their rise to glory. Heavy Trip is a love letter to all the metal heads out there who have long felt misunderstood by the outside world, and the perfect reminder to never give up your dream, regardless of who or what stands in your way.

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
This October, get ready to rock (queue bending guitar notes). Because Daily Dead productions brings you the rock event of the season with Heavy Metal Halloween (queue random explosion noises). Live, from whatever venue you want to call your house, we’ve got two face-melting, pants-dropping flicks that are sure to leave your guests on their knees worshipping at the altar of the gods of rock (queue the Rob Halford knock-off kind of, sort of, not really hitting a high note).
Okay, don’t worry. I’m not going to keep using the crappy concert ad gimmick, but this feature is going to lean heavy on the heavy metal. Think of this Halloween season double feature recommendation as an opening act and headliner that will make for a great show where metal is the connective thread, but each movie has its own tone and themes that will give at least...

February is known as Women in Horror Month, when the spotlight is put on female filmmakers working inside our favorite genre, and many horror sites run pieces about movies directed by women. And that’s great! But there’s no reason why that spotlight should be limited to only one month, particularly when there are so many brilliant and talented female filmmakers working in the genre. Why not use this October to hit up these titles on Shudder and get to know some of the most exciting female voices in horror right now?

The feature film directional debut of Jason Lei Howden, 2015’s Deathgasm is the perfect party flick for horror hounds and headbangers alike. Taking a blood-soaked page or two out of New Zealand counterpart Peter Jackson’s first feature film, Bad Taste, this satanic-themed splatter-fest also turns things up to "11" with a soundtrack filled with some of black metal’s finest. Needing an artist to capture the essence of the film for the vinyl release, Death Waltz Records commissioned Sam Turner to dish out a devilish display for the album’s cover art.
“I got involved in the project through Jay Shaw, who works for Mondo," explained Turner. "We are fairly good friends and he knows that I’m into drawing and my music tastes.” Having established himself within metal circles due to his gruesome illustrations, it was only a matter of time before he tangoed with the Mondo-affiliated Death Waltz.

On the eve of Cannes Film Festival, Variety is reporting that Daniel Radcliffe, star of Imperium and the irreverent Swiss Army Man, has signed on to headline Guns Akimbo for Occupant Entertainment.
Pitched as an action comedy, Jason Lei Howden (Deathgasm) is behind the lens for this one, and we understand Occupant and Altitude Films are preparing to launch sales at Cannes next week – indicating that Radcliffe has climbed aboard in the nick of time.
The former Harry Potter actor will no doubt inject some star power into Guns Akimbo, which chronicles the harrowing story of Miles, an Average Joe who suddenly finds himself forced to fight a gladiator-like battle for a dark website that streams the violence to a rabid, worldwide audience. Evoking memories of Charlie Brooker’s stunning Black Mirror series, Miles then begins his quest to save his kidnapped ex-girlfriend, Nova, by any means necessary. Two years ago I sat far too close (and too far to the side) to the screen in a small cinema past midnight to watch a movie billed as an incredibly gory comedy featuring very loud heavy metal music. None of those things qualify as 'things I love," and yet Deathgasm made me forget about my petty peeves and personal preferences. Now Jason Lei Howden, who wrote and directed Deathgasm, is making a new movie and I am very excited to hear the news. Howden is a visual effects artist with impressive credits, which is great, but in Deathgasm he displayed a deft ability to weave together deadpan humor with really excessive gore and well-developed suspense, which is rare.
