Ignore the medical stuff, enjoy the drama!
drvidhijainmicro17 September 2019
As a doctor, I couldn't help laughing at all the impossible surgical scenarios created by the series... CTVS surgeons doing renal transplants and intra-uterine surgeries and stuff. But I liked the part about Dr Park Hun being an ingenious surgeon who could trace the surgical anomaly simply by careful observation. This is a documented fact that in olden times when there were no CT scans and MRI's then all surgeries were performed 'blind' and the skills of those surgeons were superior to our generation. Lee Jong Suk stole the show with his charm, hair style and expressions. I liked him very much in this series, simply because of the range of emotions he was able to bring into his character, never once deviating from the role. All supporting cast was good, especially his father. The villains were well casted. Some scenes turned out a bit too melodramatic but the main characters kept the fell of the series alive and I found myself rooting for the good guys right till the end! If u r a Lee Jong Suk fan then u will enjoy this series :)

Fully disappointed...

From the first to last I thought that instead of jae hee , Dr oh will be perfect for him. Even I am sure other people thought it too.

Don't watch this... wasted my 20 hours..

Very good
martin-fennell9 February 2015
This started off with dialogue so bad, i thought it would end up as the drama i gave the lowest rating so far to. Episode 2, didn't raise my hopes too much. There is a silly chase around a pillar, which I don't think was meant to be funny. But as the show got on, it got better. It seemed to be a show that wanted to tick as many Korean type dramas as possible from extreme violence to more light hearted fare, and in between. It was only as the show went on and no longer seemed to be going for extremes that it found it's footing, or perhaps I just got used to it. Acting wise. I thought Kang So-Ra was terrific, followed by Cheon Ho-Jin, who made a great villain. In I suppose in what was the nominal female role, Jin Se-Yeon was fine. But she's probably not as good an actress as Kang So-Ra. In the lead role, Lee Jong-Suk, came across as being one of the better pretty boy actors out there. Although I really had to use my imagination to think of him as a doctor, especially when he had that HAIR. What I was a bit confused by, was who was the main female lead. Was it Kang So-Ra, or Jin Se-Yeon. To me it was Kang So-Ra, and the playful scenes between her and Lee Jong-Suk were some of the best in the series. Park Hae-Jin's performance came across as being rather one note, but maybe that was the character he played. Choi Jung-Woo could have done with toning down his performance at times. The acting from the rest of the cast ranged from adequate to good, and better.

Really Good
elena_ataur2 February 2015
Initially I started watching for Lee Jong Suk, who has proved as a very promising young actor. As the series progressed I noticed that the series has a very good plot overall. It has all genres, suspense, romance, action and you could easily characterize it as a 'medical drama'.

Lee Jong Suk has the main role, and he plays a prodigy doctor who was brought to North Korea when a politically strong individual tricked his father into going to North Korea to cure a politician during the war.

During the time he and his father where held captives and where used for their medical knowledge and expertise, Lee Jong Suk's character gained excellent medical abilities which he later on uses.

Destiny then starts to unfold.

I TOTALLY recommend this drama to anyone who likes what I've described.

Mix feelings
Abbye-Sei12 June 2020
It is only because of Lee Jung Sok that I managed to finish this show. The first eight episodes is a pain, it starts to pick up momentum in Epi 9.

This is supposedly to be a TV series with a complex plot, but lose its excitement and steam while the show stretch to build up the suspense.

The four lead characters are a mixed bag. The main lead Park Hoon is average & predictable, it is only the good acting of Lee that makes it bearable to watch Park whining, whispering and moaning about Jae Hui over and over again for the first 8 episodes. Lee Jung Sok is a promising young actor who not only have a pretty face but with real acting to boost. The Park Hoon character seriously is a waste of Lee's talent. This is the irony; the second male lead's character is far more interesting. Dr Han is a determine, intense, and talented doctor. Hae Jin Park really gives this character life and make it so believable. Good actor and handsome too. The female lead - Dr Han Seung hee or Song Jae-hui. It was written to be the main focus of this show, supposedly more prominent and important than Park Hoon. Actually the character was well written but it was the ineffective BAD acting of the actress that ruined the character and to a large degree, the show. The actress has zero acting skills, expressionless and emotionless. Her trademark expression/acting is the constipated frowned look which runs for the whole series. It is as if she is always holding back her emotion, no joy, no pain ... nada... The two leads have zero chemistry and watching them hug or whispering "I love you" to each other is like watching cartoons - ridiculous and at times hilarious. Her un-stylist dress sense is another pain to watch. The worst character is the second female lead - Oh Soo Hyun, average, pathetic and selfish to the point of annoying. I do not like this character one bit. The actress however delivers the character as it was written. Oh Soo Hyun is naïve and witless; she'll do what her father wants without question. i.e. she didn't seem to mind her father's evil act of sending Park Cheol and Park Hoon to North Korea and ruin a family. All she cared/crying about is her love wasn't reciprocated. The same with Dr Han's situation, she gets all upset by Han's revenge but not how her father had wronged Han's family in the first place.

The ending, however is satisfactory, Park Hoon ending with Song is reasonable. They have known each other since childhood, their relationship was built over a long time and have a strong foundation (I wish the actress did a more credible job), they experienced the highs and lows of their life together. No way he will end up with another woman he has just met, specially the daughter of THE man who caused his father's death, his mother's insanity and ruined his life. That just doesn't make sense.

The setting of this show is unethical & unscrupulous, putting people's life for competition is unacceptable and immoral. Watching the whole surgical team wholeheartedly focus only on winning is just so wrong. The supporting cast is strong, but there are just too many unlikable characters. The chairman, the chairman's son, Dr Moon (the clown), Dr Yang (the immoral one), the sex hungry young interns who make out at every hour of every day??!! The negatives of this show is overwhelming.

Overall, if you love Lee Jung Sok or Hae Jin Park, go for it. Otherwise, skip it.

This drama is incredible. It was full of suspense and the storyline was strong enough to captivate me to watch entirely. However, I did find some of the characters very dull. Overall, it was a very unpredictable drama.

Story
shamirakmad16 May 2020
After watching this, I felt like there was not enough justice made on the unfolding of events. Especially on the last part. It leaves a big question mark for me.

The love stories were not that much captivating on my part since I could not find the chemistry tbh, for the leads and for the support leads. I focused more on the unfolding of events.

The plot of the story is really good, this is why I am not very satisfied by how it all ended. But I guess each of us really have different perceptions on how satisfied we are with an ending.

Had such good potential
Giselle171027 July 2020
Watched it for LJS only! But the other protagonist acted so well! The actors were so good. Specially loved the bond between hun and quack! But the script was awful. The writers just drowned the series! But I m glad I read reviews before watching and didn't have high expectations!

what happened? :(

Warning: Spoilers
I can't help myself but feel disappointed. Idea for the drama plot was very good, so much potential. I really didnt like main female role, she was a bit boring and annoying. I couldn't feel chemistry between main actors. However I LOVED dynamcis between Quack and Park Hun - they were shining together in every scene - laughin, being playful, annoyed, silly...I enjoyed their every moment together and I honestly believed they will end up together. My fan heart was litteraly broken when I realised they will not end up together. What a shame.... :(

A true and perfect Doctor
ghoshsuchandrima24 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If someone aspires to be a doctor then this drama is the ideal one to watch. Perfect emotions blend with the true professionalism. Many people will think Doctor Oh will be the perfect one for Park Hoon but in my opinion that would have ruined the perfection of the characters emotion and the personality. Jae Hee has sacrificed so much that she deserves to be by his side. And Park Hoon is that perfect lover who is dedicated to one person and will remain committed in that way. That's the essence of their love story.

The acting were superb. Lee Jong Suk is just PERFECT for this character. That blend of brightness and maturity with a mysterious vibe was perfectly done by him. Other leads were equally good.

Overall a perfect drama for me with a pure message that humanity comes first for anyone and everyone.

Fun and enjoyable but had so much more potential
sez_tim8 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
OK to explain, I found that really the leading man and second leading lady not his lover made this show really well sort of funny to watch. Jung sok was really funny and playful in this series, he also brought out alot of emotions that went with his complicated role of experiencing so much. What a great story plot to run with but I have to say I found there was more of a sweeter romance going on between characters park hun and seuyon rather than park hun and jae he. Even when. They meet and they can be together it seemed so lacking in so many ways. Even to the end wow I felt really deflated by the ending, one would think for all they over came to be together that there would be more enthusiastic emotions, but it was so sombre and they focused more on the second love story than the main. I enjoyed watching the series for sure, but the writers sort stuffed the ending up as well as tying some thoughts together properly. Look it was a nice tie up of the laces type ending but nothing that left your heart melting and cheering from your lounge, like I was hoping for. Still the actors did do a great job portraying thier parts and the emotions, I laughed heaps and I cried just a little. It is worth watching just don't have high hopes for spectacular ending thats all.

Director is an idiot
Ariebeth16 April 2023
There are so many things wrong with the show. During code blue, doctors try to jump start the heart while the nurses still have their hands on the patient! Female doctors wear super short skirts and run around the hospital towering on stilettos while they are on shift doing their rounds! Doctors argue loudly and push blame on each other in front of patients! Patients run into the senior doctors' private offices whenever they wish to! North Korean spy roam the hospital hallways and private offices at all hours of the day! People at home suddenly appear at the hospital to spy on their boyfriend and then suddenly are back at home again - did they gain the ability to teleport? There are many more ridiculous moments, and the show is long and draggy with many flashbacks repeated over and over again. Overall, this was a colossal waste of time.

Doctor stranger
maddiebuggie27 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I like that this show happened to show some of what North Korea is kind of like. That many Korea shows talks about North Korea that much. I think the scene were the two were almost killed and they didn't know the other one had lived. It seem very realistic seeing they had just escaped from North Korea. I like all the medical drama that was in this show. I thought the medical stuff was good. The romance was average when I got down to it even know that things the couple did were not average in the least. There was a enough drama to keep me watching. It was never boring not even for a second. As soon as I started I wanted to binge watch the show to the very end. The script was well written. The translation was good too. The actors and actress did a great job acting in this show. All of the hair, makeup and outfits were nice looking and made sense for what was happening in the show. The plot to me was good from the start of the series to the end. I would highly recommend this show to everyone who loves medical dramas a lot.

You should watch. But!!!
deanadeva30 May 2020
To start there are 4 main character. The very talented doctor (Lee Jong Suk) from North Korea and his love interest (Jin se Youn). And an equally talented doctor back south Korea (Park Hae Jin) with the women he loves (Kang so ra). The male leads both of them were EXCEPTIONAL!. Great acting, be it the medical part of surgery or the energy and the opposite pole of characters. They were brilliant. Even if you notice a plot hole you cannot really complain cause they did such Justice to their role. And Kang So Ra as the sensitive character was good as well and had a pleasing role which makes you want to root for her. However, the role of Jin Se Yoen was just almost borderline annoying. Almost all the opinion you find online will say the same. There are places where you just wish why did you come back from North Korea? Please go back!. And there are places you are just why does this great guy even put up with all this nonsense. I don't know if anyone felt good seeing the male leads just suffer over and again because of this girl through out the series. But the saving grace is the mystery that atleast kept it going and the nicely wrapped up with a bow ending that made you feel relieved atleast for the other couple. Well you definitely can watch this. Just keep your expectations on the romance to the bare minimum to save your own disappointment.

Great Acting, Some Interesting Aspects, But underwhelming overall
leahcubed4 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
7.5/10 is my rating. Park Cheol (Kim Sang-joong) was a well known cardiac surgeon in South Korea. Dr. Park was asked to go to North Korea to perform life saving surgery on the Nation's leader. As a single father, Cheol decided to take his young son Park Hoon (Lee Jong-suk) unaware that it would be a one way trip. While spending the remaining of his growing years in North Korea, Park Hoon trained first under his father and later at a prestigious North Korean medical school to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. It was at medical school that he met Song Jae-hee (Jin See-yon) and eventually asked her to marry him. Tragic struck the young couple when Jae-hee's father was accused of spying and the entire family was sent to a concentration camp. The elites in North Korea soon discovered Hoon's genius in his field and sent him to a medical center performing highly unethical surgeries to advance medical science. Having no choice but to do as asked Hoon remained there until one day Jae-Hee and her other were brought in and he was directed to do the unthinkable. Hoon's father sacrificed himself to help the young couple escape but they became separated - Hoon made it to South Korea but Jae-hee was either dead or back in North Korea. Hoon spent all of his time and money trying to locate his lost love. A series of circumstances lead Hoon to work at Myungwoo University Hospital as a surgeon and he happened across a doctor at another hospital that looked exactly like Jae-hee but claimed not to know Hoon. This doctor, Han Seung-hee (Jin See-yon) is an anesthesiologist and she winds up working at Myungwoo University Hospital as well. Hoon is confused as to whether or not this woman is his lost girlfriend and his colleague, Oh Soo-hyun (Kang So-ra) falls for the genius doctor while trying to help him sort out the mystery.

Spoilers* I loved the character played by Lee Jong-suk of the joking but far from carefree Doctor Park. His genius in the operating theater was highly entertaining. It was easy to understand why all the main female characters would have fallen for him as he was charismatic and challenged them to be their best while encouraging and believing in them. Learning about North Korea from the aspect of someone that was under the control of the the government was a different slice of life than what is seen from a more elite perspective like in "Crash Landing on You". The fact that he was forced to do so many horrendous things and the constant fear for life and safety was in line with what refugees and those that have escaped have indicated is very common for the people there. I loved the relationship between Hoon and his father. I never felt that strongly about the relationship between Jae-hee and Hoon in North Korea it felt like we got a flash of seeing them in love and planning to marry and then she was taken away and he has to make the horrible decision of what to do with her and her father when they are brought from the concentration camp to the medical facility where they have been forcing him to do experimental surgeries on living patients. Then there is the first scene where they attempt escape and are chased down by the North Koreans and are on the bridge, she gets shot, and he winds up letting go and she falls into the water and he is unsure if she died or not. Later he is in South Korea doing small odd jobs to get enough money to get intel on her and perhaps get her smuggled out. He has a "friend" that he is working with who is a beautiful girl that calls him Hyung and treats him like an older brother. But you never get the full story of how they came to be together you just know they are very close. At that point I thought they would fill that story in later but they never fully did. The only chemistry and believable relationship to me was that between Hoon and Doctor Oh. He calls her Quack but spends a lot of time encouraging and mentoring her as a surgeon. There are many scenes where the two are shown "flirting" and laughing with each other. Jae-Hae even looks on several times noticing the two enjoying each other's company. This led me to think there would be some kind of twist. Perhaps Jae-Hae was actually dead and the Doctor that works at Hoon's hospital is an imposter who was trained and given plastic surgery to look like Jae-Hae. That would have been an interesting twist and would have enabled Hoon to pursue Dr. Oh. They spent a lot of time making the viewer observe the developing relationship between Dr. Park and Dr. Oh so much that most would not care about that old relationship between Jae-Hae and Dr. Park or Dr. Oh and her fiancé. I also was not a fan of the competition for the right to do surgery on the "Prime Minister". I could not see legitimate doctors feeling okay about that sort of competition which treated patients as objects. It was a way to show Dr. Park's humanity and aptitude for being a doctor despite the horrible things he was forced to do in his training in North Korea. However, I did not find the competition as interesting as I would have found just really complex medical cases. In the end of the show I was really disappointed that each couple wound up with the person they had started with. To stray that far from a relationship just does not speak deep and enduring love to me. I did not feel as though I had anything invested in either relationship. I also did not like how the two very talented surgeons were no longer practicing in that specialized field. It seemed as though Dr. Park was working at some kind of farm country clinic and Dr. Han or Chief Han whom he had competed with - returned to the US and was working as a legal assistant. I could not see doctors who had trained for so many years and had such passion and talent for the surgical practice, giving it up that easily. Overall I liked aspects of this show and really the acting carried it. If it hadn't been for such a phenomenal cast I would not have finished watching it as there were so many problems with the plot I would have lost interest. If someone is really into medical dramas - probably still worth the watch. It is also a good one to watch for more insight on North Korean life. For romance I think it falls very short. There is some suspense as you wonder who will wind up with whom and what the real game afoot is but the twist winds up being that there is no twist. It was predictable that the operation was really on the President and not the Prime Minister and it was not a huge surprise that Jae-Hae was really herself.

Very good medical drama
AngelofMusic199811 April 2020
This drama tells the story of Park Hoon(Lee Jong Suk)whose father alongside him was taken to North Korea. When his father is executed,Park Hoon tries to flee North Korea with a woman he loves,Jae Hee(Se Yeon Jin,who was only twenty during the filming of this drama ,and I also saw her as Mok Dan in Bridal Mask, when she was eighteen),but things do not go well .Park Hoon manages to flee, but Jae Hee is taken. He later gets a job in the hospital and is reunited with Jae Hee.Unfortunately, many factors are against our lovers, the biggest one being a threat from North Korea. The ending is very good.Acting is also very good .Lee Jong Suk and Se Yeon Jin have a nice chemistry together.Very good Korean drama.9/10 A

Good until the final episode
wheatley-2023015 December 2023
For episode after episode this series delivers an enticing mix of thriller and medical drama.

The thriller strand propels the characters forward with frenetic plotting and twists and turns aplenty. This was all pretty compelling, so the occasional plot hole was forgiven, or sometimes was explained later.

Kang So-ra deserves to be singled out for her touching performance as one of the two women in love with the hero. Meanwhile her rival's shifting allegiances and constant dissembling made it impossibly hard to root for her.

Unfortunately the final episode fails to deliver. First, the wrong woman won the hero! But that's just my biased opinion, so perhaps I should rise above that. More problematic, though, is the last action scene, which simply does not work. Shame.

2nd Half Sucked
jasminn_tan14 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The moment they started the competition to determine who can perform surgery on the prime minister was when this show started going downhill. The show became messy and I honestly hated the romances in this, as well as a good chunk of the characters. I basically skimmed through the 2nd half of this show but still wish that I had just dropped it early on.
