Horror movie from Turkey

Warning: Spoilers
Momentarily penniless and homeless, a Don Juan is looking for a place to stay. Thanks to a colleague, he finds a cheap room in a run-down house owned by an old lady. The house does have its charms, most notably in the person of the comely female renter next door...

Coming to us from Turkey, "Muska" provides us with a pleasantly foreign take on the subject of witchcraft. (The witchcraft is of a decidedly domestic character, which doesn't make it any less foul.) The acting isn't bad at all and the cultural background is interesting. Sadly the movie is too repetitive for its own good : there are way too many scenes involving the spooky appearance of a badly-burned man, just as there are way too many scenes showing the sinister landlady pottering about the sinister house while doing sinister things.

Much of "Muska" is set in the dark, to the point where one starts to wonder about the available lighting budget. In my humble opinion the movie would have worked better if it had used these moments of darkness more sparingly, so as to create a greater contrast between sun-kissed modernity and the hidden survival of an age-old evil.

In conclusion : could have been better, but not entirely without interest.
